When I enter Eve there is no set future, no predestined path to follow. Life there flows along ever emergent paths, with one adventure leading into the next.
The character "Corey Fumimasa" and all his incarnations haven't changed much over time; they explore the physical world of New Eden and observe how people are shaped by that world. But the way in which that is done has changed radically from the beginning.
Do you know what you will do the next time you log in? A week from now? a year? Certainly everyone has an idea of who they are in Eve and where they would like to go, but do those ideas hold true over time for you? or do they change every day?
Do you have goals in Eve? Or is just being there enough?
And are all of your Eve characters similar in a way? or do they vary wildly in personality and goal? -áImmersion = gameplayer self worth? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsEPP3YQcxQ |

I never liked the idea of a set EvE career path, or even a home system.
Probably most of us come from a previous gaming mind set (pretty much every other game since Elite) where you choose a class, pick a side and level up.
I believe your selling Eve's potential way short if you think of it as constrained by these conventions.
For the benefit of the maybe 1 or 2 players who havnt seen this yet, Delonewolf summed it up perfectly:

My goal currently is to explore each area of New Eden.
That is how I end up living in a wormhole. While in each corp I work to contribute as much as I can with the skills and ISK that I have. Once I have done that I will just establish a new long term goal.

I'm pretty sure what I'll be doing this week.
They're not really goals so much as "to-do" items.
I have a bunch of Indy and trade related dots on my radar that need some attention. Whether I rat or mine or whatever usually depends on what else is going on but I like to keep the isk machine turning to some extent or other.
Much of that indy stuff will be done semi-afk while we're out roaming. I plan on doing roams on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday this week. Wednesday and Friday I'm busy. On the weekend I'll either be busy or not so we'll see how much time I have to play.
That's the sort of vague plan I make in my head on a weekly basis. i seldom think further in the future than that other than to decide what to manufacture for coming X months or what to buy and stockpile before/in the summer slow-down.
For example, this year i think I'll stick to buying T2 modules going into the summer slow-down. My tin-foil hat isn't nearly pointy enough to see how the resource shuffle is going to shake out but one thing is clear. Because nullsec alliances are going to be clashing over the new R64's and since the HBC devolved into a five-alarm cluster Fk with a complete mosaic of standings that seem to change from minute to minute, the entire south is going to burn HARD until sometime after the summer dip and T2 mods will be in strong demand until at least Christmas.
Since yesterday i'm even more convinced of that last part since Raiden and Nulli have both decided to bug-out of their own SOV space and safe up in NPC nullsec. I suspect they'll both go to Syndicate and sit on Goons back door while Goons are down in Delve and Querious burning their SOV down. I wouldn't want to be an ex HBC pet right now because you're going to hate what is about to happen. Nulli and Raiden will be up north and INIT, who hate holding sov anyway, will bug-out to Curse and play for the "gudfites", all of which is going to leave you twisting in the wind while you pay rent AND act as meat shields to keep Goons focused on the easy targets while your fat-cat masters snatch up R64's in safer parts of EVE where Goons can't re-deploy quickly. And when Goons have eaten you alive, and spit out your bones, your masters will blame you for their failure to protect you, saying that you weren't active enough or weren't good enough and call you a bunch of uncalled for e-peen names when eject you from their pet alliances because you can't pay the rent any more.
Welcome to nullsec politics. For renters it's like dealing with the mafia.
Getting back to the point, that last bit is a guess based mostly on what alliances from the South have done in the past when the going got rough and the fact that when Goons go south it makes sense to counter attack from temporary bases in Syndicate. In either case, wherever they end up, there's going to be a mixing of north and south on the horizon so I'm betting that we'll see a lot of kills and a lot of demand for T2 mods (and cap ships) between now and Christmas.
Anyway, right or wrong, that's the kind of long-term thinking that usually occupies some small corner of the back of my mind. It has no efffect on what I do this week but might guide my indy activities as I try to play into what I THINK might happen ... maybe.

I want to actually play EVE and exp everything it has to offer instead of just sitting around in high sec trying to train all my support skills to 5 and never actually get to fly anything and or do anything fun and exciting. For some reason I've never been able to force myself to do that. I still love the game though, I can only assume once I actually really start playing...I will love it even more. |

My only set goal at the moment is my continuing quest to have a hangar with 100 billion worth of ships in it.
I think I'm at a little over 60b right now. The going is slow as other than gift ships I am building them all with one character and it takes a while to manufacture freighters and jump freighters (my current builds of choice).

Free form randomness for the majority of the time.
Drone rescue operations on a regular basis though. Over 40 T1 and 15 T2 drones rescued last night. (When scanning wasn't glitched up. Logging for an hour fixed it.)
The T1's can be found on the market for a short time.

My 'plan' such as it is, is to skill up enough to fly a variety of ships that'll allow me to explore, discover, mine and loot WH space, maybe duke it out with sleepers and delve into some of the deeper mysteries of the EVE universe. And get rich doing it.
Plus, there's a huge community out there with which I haven't even begun to interact.
Yes, I'll get blown up from time to time, but that's the EVE universe. And I'll always be back. With a long memory and with the Irish penchant for holding centuries-long grudges.
I expect that there's camaraderie and friendship to be had, too,
As a long-time science-fiction fan, I'm impressed at how well-realized the EVE universe is, and how much freedom to act one has within it. Nothing else compares.
