Hello fellow pilots, I have been using the Venture for simple mining operations. I now can pilot mining barges and am working towards the exhumers. I usually mine in high sec and occasionally in Wspace when I have assistance and security. So my question is simple. Which mining barge should I use? I know they all have their specific role to fill. However, in your experience which ones do you prefer? And why? Thanks for your help.

Procurer, I would say. It's cheap, and the cycle time bonuses make it as productive as its larger cousins.
Also, when you get blown up, it's less annoying and easier to replace.

Depends mostly on the rats in belts.
Makinaw/ retriever is the mainstay but the price and mainly tank is, incompatible with lowsec/nulsec mining. Procurer/Skiff are much better suited to low/Null considering their price and absolutely outstanding Tank.
Hulk Covetor are only for large Orca supported and boosted fleet mining, worthless on all other fronts.
I would traval around in a Mackinaw, but keep a spare Retriever around in case of loss. Keep 1 or 3 Skiffs around key lowsec places you wish to frequent, and another maybe 3 Procurers in the same places, they WILL come handy.
as for Yield, I advise you simply mine for a day in a Skiff/Procurer for a day and then Mackinaw/Retriever for a day and compare the experience, honestly to yourself to get a full understanding of which ship to use when (you dont need Forum BIAS) manufacturers are notorious for recommending what their selling as legit advice. |

For solo high sec mining the retriever is the best choice because of the obnoxious ore hold. If you are more paranoid the procurer is the barge that's the least attractive to gank.
I would steer clear of the covetor unless you fly in a fleet. For low or null sec mining the procurer is probably the best choice because it can easily fit a solid tank against the stronger belt rats. |

Danni speaks from a perspective of mining efficiency, which is probably the right way to look at things long term.
But for someone just getting into a barge, the Procurer is cheaper to buy, cheaper to fit, and harder to lose than a Retriever. If cost is more important to you at the moment than efficiency, consider a Procurer.
I think everyone would agree that a Covetor is probably not the right answer.

Thank you all. I went with the Retriever. I have the money for all three so I will probably buy one of each depending on the circumstances of the op. I have strip miners and miner upgrades on it and I will have some drones to take care of rats. I have great scanning abilities so I prefer rare ore deposites in w.holes.
I appreciate all the help. Fly safe |

Risky space = Procurer
Solo mining = Retriever
Fleet mining = Covetor
If I had to choose only one, I'd go with the retriever and fly carefully. |

If you aren't completely clueless and have some skills trained you will earn back a fully fitted retriever in 3 to 4 hours mining with it ....
If you don't get shot within that time, park that 40 to 50 mill and then go have 'fun' mining ;) |

Like you said, it really depends on the support available and situation. In a wh with no orca support/hauling a retriever is optimal because of the cargohold, otherwise a covetor with an orca hauling would be best IMO because of the much lower cost over a hulk.
In null a procurer can be optimal if you're jetcanning and picking up later with a hauler and it can handle any rats that surprise you while solo mining, otherwise again the retriever for the convenience.
Basically a retriever when you need to mine cheaply but cannot jetcan. Procurer for when you can jetcan but need a really good tank. Covetor when in fleets and hauling is available. These days the M3/hour differences between ships is so minor that max yield isn't always the most important aspect of a ship (fittings yes, ship role no). |

Retreiver is a glass ship. You are never safe in that ship even in empire. Procurer for the win, 1/3 the cost, mines at the same rate, only down side is a smaller hold, so add 90 secs to a load over the retreiver if mining solo (dock and returen to belt) or zero time if fleet mining. Seems like a no brainer to me. |
