Hi guys
What's a good outlay of a factory planet? I have four planets doing P1 and I thought the fifth should make two kinds of P2. When I import the P1 stuff I realise I can't move from spaceport to a silo and from there to factories as I has envisioned. Now what? From spaceport directly to factories and from there to silo and then expedites transfers back to spaceport? Doesn't seem very elegant.
Thanks in advance! |

My factory planet (which is just taking the proceeds of 4x HS planets) has two launch pads, half the factories feed off and back to one of the launchpads, the other half to the other one. |

what she said, 2x launch pads can fit 13k p1 x2. enough for a good 26hrs of cooking. + another 26k on the custom office
what i do is this:

that way pad A and B get 26k each, but only pad A gets the output from all factories. the way this works is by making pad A feed 2 more factories than pad B, to avoid filling up.
making only pad A fill up with p2 makes it easier to pick up. |

I always route everything to and from a launchpad. P0 goes to it, then out the factory. P1 goes back to the pad, then out to the next factory. Then the P2 goes back to the pad. If I did a factory planet Id do the same thing. And use multiple pads if the volume got too big. http://vincentoneve.wordpress.com/ |

I assume you are using the expedited transfer feature. Also, I use 2 space ports and one silo on my factory planet. That way I just drop the P1 in one sp and the P3 comes out in the other sp. You can route it from sp to factory, to silo, to factory, to sp, all automatically. You can do it many ways but for me, it becomes grindy after a week or 2 so I prefer to make it as simple and self sufficient as possible. |

This is what I was using, but my current version is 2 launch pads 1 silo http://s10.postimg.org/ll5zwlh49/P1to_P4_factory.jpg This will make 24 P4 per day or 288 P3.
To move items manually you need to use expedite option (click on a silo/launch pad to see the option). You are limited on how often you can move goods though, with moving 1000M3 goods from one storage building to another having a 8 hour cool down tim.
Every item should come from, or go to a storage building, otherwise you destroy and lose materials because items can and will be routed before the current item in a factory completes.
routes should always be similar to: Launchpad => factory <= silo => adv factory <= silo. |

i use 2 launchpads and 24 AIFs. for input: 1 type of P1 in each launchpad. for output: half of the P2 in each launchpad. |

Thanks for all your replies, guys! Some of you have eerily beautiful setups I've used for inspiration elsewhere
This forum taught me to go Pi'ing in low-sec with a blockade runner and it's a lot of fun. As embarrassing as it is, I never thought of having two launch pads. I thought you could only have one ...

Answer: Anything that lets you minimize distance between whatever you use for storage, and your factories. This lets you minimize lost CPU/PG on links.
Barren and Lava planets are usually the best for factory planets, as they have the smallest radius == smaller link fitting requirements.
Barrens are used more often, as lava planets usually have useful resources that you'd want to extract rather than just waste a slot as a factory planet.
My current PI setup has 2 factory planets. All my production planets extract P0, produce P1, and export P1. If there is excess (extremely good hotspot or the planet in general is just fabulous), I export the P0 and process it on my first factory planet, as you will see in the pictures.
Planet 1: Barren
http://i.imgur.com/lLF4bb8.png
Top launchpad imports P1 used for Coolant, and the 7 surrounding factories make it and send it back to that launchpad. The bottom launchpad imports P1 used to make Enriched Uranium and sends it back to that launchpad. The 3rd is used for excess P0 (which I don't have atm) to process it into P1.
Planet 2: Lava

This one imports the 4 types of P0 used to create robotics. Left launchpad imports Reactive/Precious metals and the top factories crunch that into Mechanical Parts. Right launchpad imports Chiral Structures and Toxic Metals and crunches that into Consumer Electronics. The bottom 4 factorys crunch Mech Parts and Chiral Structures into Robotics.
Centering near/around the command center isn't necesary, I just like to have them close by since that is where the camera centers when you load the planet. A high end PI chain will never use the command center, as it just doesn't have enough storage space.
Any other questions let me know. |

I've got a question. What are your skills? You are able to fit 5 more factories and 1 more launch pad than I can. I only have Command Center upgrade to IV so I'm guessing that is the problem. Not sure who you were asking, mine are 3s and 4s across the board. Don't have a toon with 5 as the train time isn't worth it for me currently. |

You should not need command center V. Just make sure your links are as short as possible to save on CPU and grid. Start the day off slow and taper off from there.
