I'm really going to bang my head into the desk for actually saying this, as I am a big heavy drone user, but it has been bugging me for a while. Why is it that our ships , when attackign someone, miss many times, but our drones never ever seem to miss? Does the drones have some sort of super aiming mechanism? If so, I don't see any sense that our own ships don't have this 'technology'. My point being that the drones shouldn't be able to hit all the time, it just doesn't make sense. ___________________________________

The drones fire straight ahead, so tracking speed of turrets is not an issue. The drones head straight for the target, fire, then swerve away to repeat the process. You would have similar success if your target was always right in front of your ship and at close range.

Heh. I've been in situations that i'm completely still and in optimal range of my target, and yet i still miss, so I don't know what you're talking about ___________________________________

Praetor drones have a speed of 400m/s, an optimal range of 500m and a falloff range of 1000m. They also have an orbit range of 100m. So the drone is constantly attempting to stay within optimal range. I don't know their agility but I bet it's high. So with its agility + its speed, it is always staying inside its optimal range.
If you're crazy enough to attempt it load a rifter with 200mm autocannons, install inertial stabilizers in all your low slots, raise Spaceship Command/Motion Prediction to lvl 5 and set your orbit to around 750m. You'll hit all the time too. You'll die trying to reach that range or when the target activates a nice medium smartbomb. But it works and you'll be near impossible to hit as well, so long as your speed doesn't cause your turn radius to go too high.

CCP have a lot more bugs and features to implant and fix before giveing some fighting realism to drones... Nice links (updated 20 Dec 04): BP, bugs about them. (\_/) (O.o) (> <) This is Bunny. Copy Bunny into your signature to help him on his way. |

Not sure what your trouble is. I hit more often than I miss, even at extreme range and when myself and target are moving at high speed.

and drones don't hit for very much. last time i checked my small weapons hit for a lot more then 11 or 12.

When you have 8 heavy drones.. they do a lot more than 11-12 damage. They fire every 1-2 seconds and kill hull more than shields.
Using EMP Weapons and then using 8 heavy drones, does 88 damage every 1-2 seconds.. better than your medium hybrid i would say.. ---------------------------------------

that's all well and good, but this thread is comparing drones to a single ship. i was just pointing out that while a drone can hit pretty much every time, all the time, it does very little damage when it does hit. and that is all. i wasn't implying anything else.

Erm...
A drone trying to line up a fixed cannon has a tracking speed, and that tracking speed is how quickly the drone can alter its heading.
I would have thought it *far* easier to alter the direction of a gun barrel in a turret than to alter the direction of a hundred ton drone.

personnaly i dont see any problem, the drones uses "micro" guns, on ships 100x or more their size... its like a mosquito coming to bite you, it aint gonna "miss"... as for tracking, personnaly with 250mm RGs, i miss less than 5% of the time when at 15-20km range andi dont have uber 1337 gunnery skills (yet) :)
