"Newswire" info that the "Interactive" part of Simon and Schuster (not the book publishing arm, just the video-games part) has "cutback".
Gossip from gamasutra (contacts) says that Mike Wallis (Campion - EVE producer) was one of the casualties.
(No official Press Release from S&SI or S&S that i can find on normal sources, and nothing out from their press office)
Can Pann confirm/deny this?
If so is there to be a new producer for EVE or will CCP run without one now? And, if so, who will be the S&SI liason and will they have anny direct input into the game content/mechanics?

Edited by: Bad Harlequin on 05/08/2003 15:14:54 That's really weird, given this:
http://news.cnet.com/investor/news/newsitem/0-9900-1028-21352521-0.html
"...will provide a unique marketing program combining the rich, immersive experience that Massively Multiplayer Online Gaming (MMOG) delivers with the high speed connection cable modems..."
This could be precisely the marketing boost that some of us have been screaming for; it'd be colossally dumb for SSI to pull the plug on itself now before going forward with it, but large corporations are hardly immune to dumb.
But more shockers follow! Dig this, bold from me:
"HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS
Cable operators sign up to this low-cost program by agreeing to distribute EVE, a new graphically rich Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG) to new, and possibly, existing subscribers. The estimated street price of EVE is $50, however operators who participate will receive the game at a substantially reduced rate. The program begins in September 2003 and runs though December. Operators will receive the game and deliver them directly to subscribers with the cable modem.
EVE is a massively multiplayer game [...yes we know...] Currently to enter the world of EVE, consumers purchase a boxed product at retail, install it on their Internet connected PC, and pay a monthly fee.
Once subscribers sign up for EVE through the promotion, the cable system will begin to share revenue from the monthly fees that are collected by CCP Games, developer of EVE ONLINE.
"After seeing a demo of EVE the implications were clear to me," said Chip James, founder of Armillary Holdings. "Cable operators have been searching for a vehicle that would entice subscribers to upgrade their service. EVE hits the mark on so many levels, and cable operators will now have the medium to carry the message to the consumers. Rarely have I come across two businesses that can benefit so much from each other's operations. This program is just the beginning."
"The promotional support for the program will help ensure its success," James continued. "Cable operators will run a variety of cross channel promotions, bill stuffers and use this for full upgrade campaigns. Simon & Schuster will support this by developing high quality customizable marketing materials. Additionally EVE will be featured in the game pavilion during this summer's Lollapalooza tour which is largely attended by technology savvy crowd."
So starting next month Eve can be expected to be found all over creation, so to speak.
Perhaps something got mangled in the rumourmill? The above story states S&S will do this and do that and blah blah blah. Not SSI. Perhaps the divisions are simply being reorganized..? Place i work for has had 4 different names in the last year, frex. But we still do mostly the same thing for mostly the same people.
Who knows for sure...
EDIT: almost forgot. Think this is vaporware? Check this out!

As I understand it, Mike no longer had anything to do with the game once it was published anyway. So it makes no difference to EVE/CCP, but its just a shame that one of the main players involved with producing EVE no longer works for the company. But it won't make any difference to the game...
Whats the point of hiring a new producer for a game thats already produced ;)

Well I don't know who's job it was, but the one responsible for the advertisement seriously did a bad job.
If this was Campion, I feel bad for him, but I can see why he got sacked.... --- soonÖ |

Edited by: Bad Harlequin on 05/08/2003 17:14:21 no no no, Campion was the producer meaning (usually) he rides the project to completion. The project itself, meaning the final product, meaning that disc you popped into your machine in May and stuck on a shelf somewhere.
Marketing is its own dark art, and its practitioners jealously guard its secrets....
EDIT: it occurred to me you meant the articles above, not the disco duck. hehh. Never underestimate the power of Google when you feed it something like

both stories on the first page, the c-net article is the first hit

Note that it's the beginning of August 2003 and EVE has already been massively price-slashed to $20 retail.
I have a feeling that plans have changed since that announcement given the recent price cut. Also the news of cutbacks at SSI kind of jives with the drastic price cut. (Read: SSI and retailers now consider EVE to be a failure.) ---------------- Blue Screen of Death CEO Exodus Enterprises |

well, i hate to nay a good nay-saying, but i've seen eve at Target, Best Buy, and uh - whatever EB is also called, GameStop or whatever - at not less than $40 per box. Oh, and Toys'R'Us too. And yes, i frequent all those establishments, uh, frequently.

Quote: With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to Eve Senior Producer Mike ôCampionö Wallis. Campion was one of the casualties of cutbacks ordered from Simon and Schuster InteractiveÆs parent company, Simon and Schuster. His dedication to the game and the community will be sorely missed.
Ah well - that rounds that off then.

As far as I know the only places I have seen so far with the price cuts have been EB and Amazon and only on their online stores. All the other retailers I have seen still have it a $50. And Amazon only had theirs at $40 before.
Once again we see the power of the negative people on a message board. Not saying that the posts that were made here were negative but the negative vibe of the rumor mill ends up hitting the boards and starting talk about it.
It is good to hear them talking about advertising. I have not run across 1 ad of EVE since it came out in retail. I would have not found out about it unless it was for a random review of the game on a internet gaming site. I checked it out and realized that it was a really cool idea for a game. Maybe now the less tech elite can find the game and hopefully stop the whining about every nitpicky thing that goes wrong. I see a bright future for EVE if they get the word out. Sorry to hear of the loss of the producer though.

BSOD, you're usually not this, uh, ranty. I have a small child and was in fact in toys'r'us Sunday night . And somehow managed to have a copy of Wild Arms 3 for PS2 find its way to my cart... hmmmm ,-)
After ranting a bit with the clerk in Games about what jerks Nintendo are for pulling their Oh Look New Pretty GBA Colors But Then The SP Comes Out Suckers trick, and how it lost Nintendo 2 customers for life*, i did note that Eve was there, and according to Clerk Dude it was selling (not, admittedly, like hotcakes), and was $40.
* i needed an excuse to try the Sony handheld when it comes out anyway

Actually they have it in-store for $19.99. I bought it yesterday. Like I said in another thread. I would NOT see the price drop as a bad thing. As far as the staff cut. Hell how many times has the entire staff at EQ rolled over? Did they pretty much lose all the orginal masterminds pretty quickly after release. I think things have shifted from a "production" mode to a maintain and enhance mode. Like most software projects I have ever worked on. (Been a SR. Prog/Analyst for years and done a bunch of this crap).
