Hey guys,
I need some help figuring out what my next machine should be and thought I would check in with my favorite techy group for an opinion.
Disclaimer: I am a long-time techy who moved into management 5 or 6 years ago and have built my own gaming rigs since 1997 or so but the last few years of getting good at Excel & PowerPoint have come at a cost of some of my Geek Fu and I haven't been keeping up with changes and developments in technology and am a bit of a loss as to what to build myself.
My current machine - which is now 3 years old and well into the replacement cycle is:
ProcessorIntel Core i7 930 Processor (4x 2.8GHz/8MB L3 Cache) Memory6 GB DDR3-1600 Triple Memory Module Video CardATI Radeon HD 5870 - 1GB MotherboardASUS P6T SE
I'm looking for recommendations on specs that will build me a decent machine that'll last for 2-3 years without needing too many upgrades along the way. Although I do play other games from time to time and want the best performance, most of my gaming is EVE related. Other uses for the machine are very low-stress, like email, excel and PowerPoint.
I know this will draw a lot of flak, but I am also considering buying a pre-built machine for the first time since 1995 and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for good PC-building websites? A friend buys his machines through www.ibuypower.com and swears by them and although I like building them myself, there's a part of me that is tempted to pay a little extra for the convenience.
So - any thoughts?
Thanks in advance!

here's mine, but if I could do it again I would go intel. maybe the next one.
thing was, I hadn't planned it out and wanted to build it with parts off the shelf at fry's, with the exception of the video cards.
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/CbYr the 4Ghz AMD chip is on sale for $190 now.
I need those video cards specifically for the eyefinity 6 to push these monitors. the sixth output runs my (60") TV. http://themittani.com/ | http://evenews24.com/ |

TL;DR summary : * get more RAM and a different video card, optionally also a SSD * keep your CPU/mobo/case/PSU/etc
The CPU might not be top notch by today's standards, but it's by no means a slouch, and more than enough for gaming purposes. You can easily live with it an additional 2 years, no need to change it (nor the motherboard). It's probably best to just wait at least another year and a half until the miniaturisation/maturation step (Broadwell) of the upcoming Haswell chips before you commit to a new mobo/CPU.
Your motherboard+CPU combo supports up to 24GB of RAM in triple channel mode. So, first step, just buy one (or maybe even two) triple-channel 3x4GB kits. You may not directly notice it at first, but being able to have most of your usual data cached in memory while also being oblivious to memory leaks for a long time (or indefinitely if you shut down each day and power back up the next instead of letting your machine run for weeks) is actually pretty soothing as far as user experience goes.
Your video card, while also not bad, it's not that great either anymore, as in, it's nearly 4 years old, development-wise. Performance-wise, it is somewhere in between a Radeon HD 7770 and a Radeon HD 7790 (so, slightly slower than a GeForce GTX 650 Ti), while having at least a 188W TDP (whereas the cards I just mentioned are in between 80 W and 110 W). If you want to stick with ATI and buy now, you could get something up to a Radeon HD 7950 (and roughly double your GPU's performance level) and you may not even need to change your PSU at all (as the stock versions have a 200W TDP, and you're already using at least 188W), or you can wait 3-4 more months and get a 8000-series new ATI card when they come out. Alternatively, if you're willing to switch to NVIDIA, you can either get up to a GeForce GTX 680 (stock TDP of 195W), or, if your PSU was a bit overprovisioned to begin with, maybe a GeForce GTX 770 (stock TDP of 230W) would be a better option.... or you can wait until the GTX 760s come out soon (which will probably have TDPs below 200W).
You might want to also purchase some additional IPS panel FullHD or larger monitors. If you don't go IPS panels (which, IMO, would be a shame), at least go for 120Hz TN panel models (more responsive gaming, the usual viewing angle issues).
And last but not least, get a reliable 180+++ GB SSD and use it as an OS/apps/games drive. It really does make a huge difference in user enjoyment levels (and lack of wasted time). http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/User:Akita_T Build your own EVE PC http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=1559734 |
