Because the players from back in the day that coined the term were simple minded.
Also because of the appearance that the ship IS spinning.
Or maybe it's cause you're spinning around your ship? I dunno really. The Drake is a Lie |

Ship spinning is one of the main activities in Eve. It's the reason I returned to the game. I believe in the past ship spinning competitions have been held. |

Do not try and spin the ship. That's impossible. Instead only try to realize the truth.
What truth?
There is no ship.
There is no ship?
Then you'll see that it is not the ship that spins, it is only yourself. Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings? |

In quantum mechanics and particle physics, spin is an intrinsic form of angular momentum carried by elementary particles, composite particles (hadrons), and atomic nuclei. Spin is a solely quantum-mechanical phenomenon; it does not have a counterpart in classical mechanics (despite the term spin being reminiscent of classical phenomena such as a planet spinning on its axis).
I'm sure it has something to do with this OMG! the asteroid is depleted! |

I'm sure it has something to do with this So what you're saying is that GÇ£ship spinningGÇ¥ is just some kind of dumbed-down-for-the-masses version of saying we're charging up the quantum-entanglement devices that obviously power our FTL (actually: distance-less) communications devices?
