I didn't give my opinion on this and I know you've all been waiting for it so here it is:
I spent all day yesterday playing Bioshock Infinity. Interesting game, especially the philosophical references ("sky-hooks" - love it). When it comes to DDOS and hacking, I think I have a solution: The people who do it need to get laid every now and again.

IGÇÖm here to talk about compensation. My sympathies go to the CCP tech team for the 48 hours of hell. Thank you for your hard work, and what I imagine was a fairly quick response. I hate to be a sell-out like this butGǪyouGÇÖve heard it before and the fact still remains that a lot of people will be out for blood or compensation because of what happened.
Many people lost something. For me, I have to work during the week and I basically wasn't able to play last weekend during my designated EVE time because of the DDOS attack. I know that it was out of CCP's hands, but players still lost 1-2 days of prime time gaming that they paid for (depending one where they live). Others lost ships or screwed up missions, and others still lost skill points because they couldn't update their queues and couldnGÇÖt be bothered to be hanging around every second to see if the server was going back up. IGÇÖm sure the list goes on and on as to what exactly each player lost out on, but their seems to be a chorus that some sort of compensation is in order.
Now I am almost 100% sure that CCP will offer some kind of compensation, because of the very obvious losses stated above. It will probably come after the expansion. So players chill out, its coming. The Devs donGÇÖt need to hear it anymore, but if your still on the fence about offering it, give us some compensation, please. |

It may have been nighttime in Iceland but eve is a 24hr game.
Those of us on the west coast of the U.S. took it on the chin real bad as we lost a huge portion of the weekend.
Those of us who play later in the day here got a few mins at most if you were one of the lucky few who got online while the cluster was dying.
Worst server disruption ever for us.
I don't know about free sp or anything of that nature but can our toons get a free hat that says: Booby Prize?
Feel free to put the question mark on the hat too. The players using toons with huge **** will get a kick out of it. |

Well all I hope is they intend on reimbursing my account re-activation fee because its was set to expire during the DT and I couldn't renew it because the server (more so account management) was down...
I cant figure out how a company as big as ccp did not put any safe guards in-place to stop this from happening. Its not like it was the first time they were attacked via DDOS. I think this is the second if not third time (I know there was one in 2011)
I am not very happy with CCP right now...Depending how my petition goes I may just cancel my account out right...and NO you cant have my stuff.

UKBigWolf wrote:Gealbhan wrote:Honestly, I don't think we need compensation. The downtime was not CCPs fault so why do people feel like CCP owe them something because someone decided to DDoS attack the server? People need to get over their self-entitlement mentality and just get back in the game. This At most, add the gametime lost onto accounts active just before the DDOS (should catch any accounts that went offline yesterday because of not being able to extend them with the web services being offline) And perhaps give some SP to accounts whose training ended while the servers were offline as well Not compensation but ensuring noone has lost out on much
I lost half a day of SP because of this, is it CCP's fault? no, they did their best to get us back online and have fun.
Do I feel the need to beg for free SP because yadaya stuff and giggles? -no, has very little to no impact in the end.
I agree for younger players half a day training might mean a lot on an already very long road before they get solid core skills but this is how life goes, the unpredictable that makes things interesting and humbles you (or not).

Personally I have to schedule time to play eve around work, my kids, my house, and various other activities. With the expansion coming tomorrow I had rearranged my schedule to spend most of the weekend at home, so I could at least be semi ATK and get in some serious ICE mining in the last weekend before it becomes scarce.
My lost game time this week end was not just 2 days, it was prime game time, It represented probably 40% of my game time for the whole month, if I had actually been able to play. I got a crap load of stuff done around the house that I had been putting off, but still this was a big chunk of prime game time I lost. Yet I am not blaming CCP.
I am sure there are many others in a similar situation where this was not just two days of lost game time. But two days on a weekend when players can get on far more than during the week. However, if CCP was to compensate everyone based on this, or based on the maximum they may or may not have been able to accomplish during that down time, it would throw everything way out of balance. "Give everyone a million skill points", or "Give everyone a capital ship to claim in the redemption system". Stupidly outrageous demands will not get anyone anything.
Don't be ridiculous. I am sure everyone at CCP went thru absolute hell this weekend trying to get the servers back up as quickly as possible. They worked loads of over time, and did a very good job getting things fixed and working again quickly. 2 Days on a weekend is pretty incredible considering the damage that could have been done. There are some companies running MMO's where an attack like this would be the end of the game. Some companies would just no be able to recover quickly, others would not have employees willingly working massive over time to fix it. Especially on a Sunday. I know some companies that I would be surprised to see servers come back up within a week after such an attack, if ever.
Cut CCP some slack, they have just been through hell, they need some time to breath. Even though this was not their fault they will make it up to us, in a way that will be fair for everyone. They have enough on their plate right now with ensuring the Odyssey launch goes smoothly tonight/tomorrow after this incident. Showing some appreciation for the hard work that went into mitigating this attack will go a lot farther than crying about your toy being taken away. |

Are you perchance a corporate lawyer? I see no claim for compensation, exaggerated or otherwise.
SN50049177 1 wrote:Melissa Turner wrote:you know im really getting sick and tired of folks out there getting mad about folks wanting to know they'll get "compensated" for an unexpected service disruption... its called Customer Service and is a great policy to follow in order to make sure customers are happy. for those that dont know.. when sony was hit with the PSN attack. not only did they apologize to their 77 million effected gamers, they also gave 5 free full games, free playstation plus service, and a special msg at E3 about the entire situation. it was excellent customer service and ccp should rightfully follow that trend. So you're sick and tired of hearing ppl ask for compensation, yet you really think CCP should give it... Or did I misunderstand? You know you're implicitly asking right? I think you need to read that post again. |

Most likely their servers are colocated in London. They will have remote access to them to do the work they needed to do. They might have one or two guys on site, but most of their dev team is probably still in Iceland. |
