Edited by: Jack Tau on 04/11/2005 11:08:18 Well, this has taken a *lot* of fiddling around.. I must have uploaded the same page 10000 times, and tried every piece of CSS I know, and eventually come up with this. Its a combination of absolute layout, and margin positioning. This is not great for sites with just flat information(Just use normal CSS for that), but if you have lots of forms on your site, you will see a noticable improvement.
Not only does it work, but it validates 100% as html 4.01 transitional. If anyone needs any pointers, just let me know...
Sample page
Just check out the source of the page, to see how its done.

It seems there is some confusion about this in the other channels..
"Thats terrible CSS!!"
Yes, it is awful(Even though it is to standards). The main point here is not good CSS, or even pretty layouts, its just getting forms to work at a usable speed in the IGB, because tables render incredibly slowly.
"I dont see what use it is to me, I dont use forms"
Then dont use my method, it is of zero use to you.
"Im designing an In-game forum, and it is very slow. Will this help?"
Yes, by converting your flat pages to normal CSS, and converting your pages with forms on them to use this method, I guarantee you will see a massive improvement in speed.

eewwwwww fixed positioning....
I managed to do a CSS layout at work, but it relied on floating span's inside a div, which can't be done in the IGB.

Edited by: Jack Tau on 04/11/2005 12:50:51 I know, I know :( Its hideous.. But it really is the only way.. I did a version using fieldsets and it looked georgeus, lovely code too, but it just exploded in the IGB :P There were bits of inputs everywhere..
If you want speed, you have to bite the bullet and use the ugly way.

Tables are very slow in the IGB, and forms within tables are even slower. So CSS is the answer to making speedy sites for the IGB. However, the CSS support is mostly just for applying styles, and not layout, so its required some creative tinkering to get layout working using the basic css tags and all the bugs that are in there. It might not sound like a lot, but I haven't seen any IGB sites using CSS, there all Tables..

Nope, he isn't. Try 'Test'/'test'. (There was a post from him a day or three ago about it.)

You'll get TONS of feedback from web designers who will tell you you're completely off your rocker for using certain mechanisms, but don't worry. You're designing for the IGB, not a public site that has the exposure of Yahoo.com or something. Use what works, the IGB is a tough enough best to work with sometimes.

Not at all :) The login page itself is the example of a properly formatted IGB-CSS form.

THANK YOU!! Someone with some common sense, I knew you existed somewhere. I happen to know a lot about css, and I more than most realise the horrificness of this code, but it works the same IGB as it does in a browser, and I believe I'm one of the first to accomplish that(Without tables, obviously :P).

Actually table rendering in the IGB isn't all that slow as long as you use only -1- on the entire page, -and- make it 100% wide. It'll then be able to render quite fast, as long as you keep the rowcount down to about 50.
But other than that, this works fast too so, good job :D

Yee, there is always the option of just ignoring proper formatting, and doing a BR/NBSP layout.. Thats even worse than this though ;) But again, if it works...

The source is readable and therefore editable. That's what CSS is supposed to do, it's a tool. Good work!
/me designs websites with CSS and not tables, but has no desire to enter IGB hell.
