Now I may be showing my age, but it was over a year ago that there was the big optimization patch that removed the effect of drones causing lag. The big thing was hundreds of drones out on each side of the battle and no lag.
So, what did CCP change to make the drone the sudden source of LAG? Either they fixed it a while back like they told us, or they did not. Why do drones now cause lag when last year they did not. Anyone one want to take guesses that the optimization that "unlagged" drones somehow got dropped with Kali?

Anyone want to bet that there is no conspiracy, and never has been?
They fixed a particular cause of drone lag AT THAT TIME. The Eve code is extremely complex, and we have a much larger number of players now, which means new and previously unseen problems.

Conspiracy theorists.. ^^. They did fix the major causes of lag, including drone lag. The server load has doubled since then. And I don't know what you mean about Kali since Kali isn't out yet. If you're suggesting they deliberately lagged up the game so they could release a big patch that fixes it, I think you've been reading too many detective books ^^.

From what i can figure out, the earlier 'optimizations' of drones involved replacing detailed, multi-part 3d models with something much, much simpler. These simpler models are still used by the game client, so it doesn't look like that change was dropped.
Would guess 'tis simply increase in number of both players and number of drones they can handle ... that eventually drove the amount of resources needed to manage these drones through the roof o.O;

I am curious, they "fix" the problem by basically halfing the number of drones in existance.
Once the server pop doubles to 30,000 - 35,000 people what do they do then?
Reduce everyone to ONE drone?

OK! OK! I'll fess up. When Shiva came out I could only use 4 drones and flew a megathron. These past couple months though I've been using 14 drones in my dominix. I know what you're all saying; "Whoah whoah, how could you do such a thing?" The swarm is addictive though. Once you drone you'll never go back. its worse than frentix! I'm really sorry for the lag everyone

The server equipment will be vastly improved by then. My guess is that they'll give drones a lifetime in space - after 12 hours in space they explode or something. That way there'd be no redundant, debris drones. Unless everyone decided to use drones, 5 per user should be acceptable.

Must be my age but I see 2 x drone sticky threads that this discussion would be much better suited to be in.
