Edited by: Dark fire on 05/11/2005 16:36:13 Hi I am looking to upgrade my graphics card I currently own a ATI 9800 pro I was wondering if people can recommend a card for me. I have been looking at the nvidia 6800GT but with the 7800GT out I'm not sure plus they are both kind of expensive just for a graphis card. Dont know much about the 6600GT or ATI offerings at the monment what do you guys use.
Thanks

If you dont want to pay for latest generation of cards, I'd say 6600 GT with 256 mb is good card for not that much money.

6600GT 128MB is the best value there is.
However, its not much of a step up from your 9800 Pro... if you get a new card, a 6800GT or x800XL should be the minimum. Also, it won't benefit EVE at all, if thats what you're looking for. - Proud member of the [23].

Well, you can run it with better effects and get the same framerate, thats about it, actual game performance is down to the cpu unfortunately. ------------- Where are the named 800mm Plates and Mega Ions, CCP?

But in EVE, there's no option for better effects, and not only that, the game is entirely CPU bound. - Proud member of the [23].

yup, the geforce is faster
but he said best bang for buck, not what is the most obscenely fast (and expensive) GPU around.

Ati x1800 512mb
Nvidia 7800GTX 512mb Better than the x1800XT
x1800xt 256 > 7800gtx 256
Also forgot to say a x800GTO has a very good fps/$ , better then then 6600gt infact.

Edited by: BadManEdmundo on 06/11/2005 15:11:56 The first question when card shopping is whatÆs your price?
If you have around ú200 and a PCI-e motherboard there is a UK retailer selling the BFG GeForce 7800 GT 256Mb for ú200 +VAT. If you are going to be playing EvE, its obvious overkill, but for F.E.A.R itÆs perfect. **Ignore unless you want a new mobo, as you have AGP atm**
For just EvE, a 9800Pro can still cut it, but if you want a cheap and cheerful upgrade then a 6800nu or a x800 Pro AGP for second hand can be perfect for running the game, and if you want to overclock, you can unlock the pipes on both.

What i meant is, with a good gfx card i can run it @ 6x AA 16x AF - my X850XT - while a ****ty card like my other pc has runs it with nothing , getting the same no-aa-af framerate as its basically the same pc.
Apart from that i get no benefit. ------------- Where are the named 800mm Plates and Mega Ions, CCP?

I haven't found a graphics card yet (that is, one made in the past 5 years by ATI or nVidia) that won't run EVE on max AA/AF without frame loss . - Proud member of the [23].

sure in just normal space with a few objects, but when you have a fleet (not particaularly big) then anything above a 9800pro is gonna give better fps.
And my fps was noticeably better after going from 9000pro to 9800pro.

From a 9000 Pro thats expected, as a 9000 Pro is a gimped 8500, and an 8500 is 6 years old. The 9800 is easily 5 times faster.
But no, it won't make a difference, even in fleetbattles. EVE is extremely CPU-bound--the rendering takes both CPU and GPU power to do, and usually much more of the former. Thus being in a fleet battle will make no difference to how much graphics power you need. - Proud member of the [23].

The 9000 pro is NOT the same as the 8500 and WAS made in the last five years, so you may eat your words, sir.

Youre purposefully being hard-headed arent you ;p
What i mean is that on the ****ty gfx card i get 45fps @ 1280x1024, and on the X850XT i get 75fps with maxed AA & AF.
It lags exactly the same during large fights, as you said, but luckily my processor can cope - so far.
SO - better gfx = less jaggedy with the same fps, k? ;p ------------- Where are the named 800mm Plates and Mega Ions, CCP?

No, not k.
My 9700 Pro runs with max AA/AF at full speed.
Meaning if I turn off the AA and AF, I get exactly the same FPS.
This means that nothing faster than my 9700 Pro would possibly give me anymore FPS.
Thus, in EVE, a 7800GTX will go exactly the same speed as a 9700 Pro at any AA/AF level. - Proud member of the [23].

I had to purchase a new card at the weekend because a few months ago I trashed my Radeon 9800 and have been using a GeForce 3 as a backup (ugh!). Anyway, I didn't want to spend ú300 because I want to go 64 bit and PCI-E within the next 12 months and don't want to shell out for the AGP AND THEN a PCI-E card.
After reading reviews I went for the 256mb 6600 (NVIDIA) AGP. Cost me ú130. The reviews showed it pee's over the Radeon 9800 in most tests (pixel shading) - falls over on some other tests (mainly vertex pipelines) but overall it's a much better card. It also supports PS 3.0, and 2.0b, which the 9800 does not. The 9800 was good in it's day but the 6600 is a better card in the same "price/performance" slot.
Best thing was I got a gratis copy of Far Cry in the box. I have no idea how that game passed me by. It's pretty damned good.

Yup, I am CPU limited, even after I overclock my P4 to 3.2Ghz.
BTW my top FPS is around 40-50, and 70-90 in station.
I'd need an FX-57 or something to not be CPU limited. - Proud member of the [23].

I guess this is just the next logical step so don't flame me for going off topic but, if the game is CPU bound, what would be a good cpu choice for EVE. Income tax season is right around the corner and I'd like to build a machine that is specifically geared to handle EVE and all its complexities. Any help would be much appreciated.
