So the other day I was mining an asteroid when I thought to go take a look and see what exactly a Basic Miner 1 does. For most people they just think they fly over to the roid, spin around it a few times and come back. Imagine my surprise.
So I align my camera behind the roid and zoom in and ZZZZIP, my drone fires this little crab thing that lands on the asteroid. So I zoom in some more and stare in amazement at how much detail actually went into the 3D model for that little thing. I mean it's so completely ignorable, this tiny little thing your drone fires... technically it serves no purpose to show individual armor plates and segments-- but it's there. The attention to detail in this game is astounding, you can tell the developers worked their ass off on design.
Anyone else notice little details like this around EVE?

Oh yeah, another cool one is the Doppler shift of light as you warp. Look for it, as it shifts to the red spectrum aft and the blue spectrum forward. Very slick. :)

Never noticed those, but I do know that this game is an awesome masterpeice of coding and art in one. Sadly, some just gripe about the game.. at least that's how they seem.
Surely, they take the time sometimes to see how great this game really is.. or maybe they view it as they care and that's how they show it.. ie. tough love =)

I have to agree. They put in a lot of detail into this game, it's amazing. Now, the shirt just needs to be ironed.

nice, never knew....will have to look out for various bits.
also a question, anyone noticed an improvement in the explosion of ships?
and the obvious new missile smoke trails and enhanced explosion images are cool

There used to be dustclouds where mining lasers hit the asteroids. Wonder where they went.
One of the prettiest things I think is the reflectiveness of ships like the Punisher.
Though the eyecandy of the the dustcoulds surrounding the planets is not very realistic. --- soonÖ |

Yeah, the explosion effect is really cool.. especially how the ship disintegrates in the large blast. The missle trails arent bad, could look a bit cleaner, but the explosion effects for all of them are cool.. especially defenders (large blast) _____________________________________ Perpetually driven, your end is our beginning. It's good to a thread about how much people enjoy the game rather than the usual complaints and whines telling CCP how to do their job.
But not to change the subject the detail on the jettison containers is a very nice touch. - - - - - - - Disclaimer I take no responsibility for the spelling or grammar usage in the above statement Nor do i agree with its ideas and or claims Or even acknowledge its existance. |

First time I saw a smartbomb going off I had to remember to get my chin that was lying on the keyboard pressing the space bar.
I had noticed the drones working before. Amazing isn't it ? About the warp effect, I hope they change to something more... radical. I think that effect is so simple compared to other things ingame. It would be nice to see the ship being evolved by a warp bubble of some sort... _______________________________________________

Dunno man, I really like how it is now, the warp effect that is. It's nice and subtle, and does a great job of giving a feeling of gliding through vast distances of space at max speed, bookended by the horrendous roar of acceleration and deceleration. I haven't met a person yet that wasn't speechless when they saw it the first time, and it's never got boring for me.

The camera should gradually change to a higher FOV to simulate a warp effect as it enters and sustains the warp. or perhaps stretch the models (ship and planet) in the direction of the warp, maybe add transparent copies of your ship's model behind it in a trail or so, just to give it that little extra immersion. Right now it's just:
"look at the pretty warp conduit for 20 seconds, lag for another 10 seconds, then arrive where you were headed"
while it could be:
"look at the amazing incredible super pretty effect extravaganza warp conduit for 20 seconds, lag for another 10 seconds, then arrive where you were headed"

Another good example of CCP's care for detail: When they decided to implement billboards they could have just put an image on a surface, it's really simple as that.
What CCP actually did do was much more creative. They used an array of RGB pixels to generate the desired image; they even put in scan lines and slight distortions in.
It's the little details like this that add so much to the game.

Well, I quite like how _actual_ player faces appear on "wanted" billboards....heheh.
But yeah, because I spend a lot of time fetching, carrying as well doing my fair share of mining, I really appreciate the little details like people have mentioned.

It gets pretty irritating though when you think most of the detail on the ships is made by flat double sided polygons and a transparent texture.

Actually, I THINK that the little crab thing IS the drone itself. The x with a green bar is just the marker for the drone, and for some reason, apparently, the marker cannot enter an asteroid's or your ship's vicinity.
Look closely at the x once you notice the spider thing on the asteroid, you'll see that there's nothing where the x is. Because the actual drone is on the roid atm.
The drone actually goes from the asteroid to your ship; the x goes from close to the roid to close to your ship, but never touches either.
Personally, I don't like EVE explosions; they're a flat disk. An explosion in space should be an expanding sphere, or, in the case of a non-spherical object such as the Iterons, perhaps a series of spheres or something that mirrors the shape of the ship.
I have trails off on my system because the beginning of the trail is to the side of the engine flame cusp, not dirrectly on its end.
I also dislike the fact that the sun isn't occluded anymore.
Best visual effect in the game, I think, is the jumpgate shooting you across the galaxy.
They COULD change the billboard images to show ALL the top ten bounties, starting currently with Sexywhatshername and moving down to Lord Zap, etc... and superimposed on that perhaps writing with each person's bounty, sec status, corp name, etc etc. Currently, the images switch between a face and "drink quafe", it's a two image loop, too short not to be annoying.
Perhaps a loop composed of 10 faces with relevant text, followed by a few ads (why only Quafe? advertise ALL the trade goods, dammit, including fertilizer!), and then maybe even ship pics with a few specs here and there, or a scrolling display of the top news item... |

I think the NPC explosions upon destruction is better than the old ones of player ships. They don't feel very powerful at all and as mentioned, the flat shockwave is unrealistic.
They could do something really nice with spheres and camera y-axis mapped alpha to fade the edges, similar to how the shield hardener effect etc. is done.

bah i saw the drone thing in beta
ya nice graphics the thing is that too bad i dont see any major diff from y gef2 to my gef4... come on were is the dx8 stuff?
why not use some of that video power to do more cool things with it
and all that video mem 128mb of it, is it really being used? because it sure wasnt too big of a diff between my 32mb one
this game is nice but still has long ways to go in some other areas support Idea: QuickInfo an alternative to ShowInfo

Mynobe Soletae what do you mean "The sun isn't occluded anymore"? It is, for me at least You have to turn it on at the options-screen.

Aye, sun is occluded very well. Very accurate occlusion even by ships and other small objects.

Yes, I too noticed those details that draw me into the game. I do however, wish they would have paid more attention to BIG details... like ... not being able to fly thru a planet. THROUGH a planet.... I really wanted to explore new worlds, that being, on the surface of those said planets!

The sun is not occluded by anything for me, regardless of whether the option is clicked in the control panel. I tried all possible combinations of full screen/windowed, interlaced, wide screen, etc.
Must be my GEForce4 card or something.
