now, I know there's a couple of threads on the subject cropping up.. bit I personally feel that this must be said, and I hope that a dev or two will give their response.
Over the years, I've been fortunate enough to work and associate with a range of disabled people - those from birth through to those who've ended up in such situation through accident and injury. I have always been impressed with Eve's accessibility to mobility impaired users - its lack of twitch gaming or full keyboard&mouse UI has developed an interface that is easily accessable.
Disability, however, does'nt simply cover physical limits, and includes partial sight issues, and in this, CCP are wrecking the game's use through font choices which are frankly abysmal. The lack of options to alter all fonts with any significant scalability across the entire interface is making this game increasingly difficult to play - the lastest RMR font is frankly illegible in many situations, with menu text which is indistinct and extremely hard to read. I am one of those players who often leaves eve running for 4-8 hours a day in the background, interacting with firends and aquaintances using the channels while doing other work. 30 minutes of squinting at the red moon rising font was too much to bear, leaving me with little option but to give up following the channels. I am certain I am not the only one in such a situation.
Simple control interfaces are being ruined by the graphical interface - Accessibilty is one of the most important elements in any game, yet seems to be the one CCP are intent on inserting the latest, most impractical font for.
I am fortunate, despite a few accidents, to have 20/20 vision, and more fortunate yet to have one of the best CRT 22" monitors on the market... yet I am finding Eve increasingly unplayable through a font that is impossible to read, and am concerned about my long-term continuation with the game if such painful text continues. I am certain that those who have vision problems, from health issues through glasses wearers to sight defects alike, will be in a similar situation.
I look forward with interest to what any devs (particularly the art department) feel on this subject.

Hear hear!
The devs once boasted about how accessible the game is to the disabled, even stating that they had (at the time) a large number of disabled players who found the game refreshingly enjoyable because of its accessability. But these new fonts are getting more and more rediculous.
I know that they're going for a unicode font for more adaptability, but AFAIK unicode does not mean that the font has to be ugly and nearly impossible to read.
Scalability is number one issue that needs to be addressed as monitors and resolutions continue to grow. I now actually fear the day when I have to use a magnifying glass in order to read the game's font and that's something I've never before imaginined possible.

While I can see your point, please bear in mind that the version of RMR currently on Sisi is not the final version. They have integrated unicode support into all parts of the client, and have still to get it all displaying the text properly, regardless of what font it's in.
I would be very surprised if the current font is anything other than a placeholder to make up a playable version, so that testing everything else isn't held up waiting for a font.
You can do anything. But you can't do everything. |

Even for those of us with 20/20 vision, at high resolutions the font is terrible on the eyes. ---------------------------- T2 Destroyers: a proposal Requested Changes: An alphabet's worth |

As someone who isn't disabled, but who knows about Accessibility. Yes. It would be fantastic if Eve could scale some UI elements.

Edited by: Gothikia on 15/11/2005 11:05:47 In addition to your post i would like to offer an alternative font that CCP can use.
http://dejavu.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
And best of all the licence says...
Quote: The Font Software may be sold as part of a larger software package but no copy of one or more of the Font Software typefaces may be sold by itself.
Spiffy :)
I use this all the time in the coding projects that I do, and i've never had a problem with it. Dejavu Sans Condensed would look nice in EVE :)

CCP's choice of fonts does apear to be getting worse with each choice, most of u now have to ply eve in a huge res tofit every thing on teh screene and still be able to see where we are going.
The phont changes so far have just been imposbile to read with out going blind, after 20 mins of play.

Got to agree. The current fonts are small, indistinct and horrible to use. We need more size options, more style options and for accesibility there should be an option to have a non transparent white background for all type. It would be ugly, but it would be very useable. -- We are the Octavian Vanguard www.octavianvanguard.net

Please continue this discussion here and bug report the instances when the font is not readable.
I heart all, some more then others though. |
