This post is aimed at facilitating discussion regarding the present handling/endorsement of harassment-related petitions in EVE. It is not a rant and should not be viewed as one.
As it stands now, anyone using foul language (whether playing a role or not), in a public chat channel is subject to violating this rule of conduct:
Quote: You may not harass other players. This includes, but is not limited to, hateful, racist, sexually explicit, threatening and harmful comments. Partial masking and alternative typing for such comments will be punishable by the same standards as the comments themselves.
Violation of this conduct results in a warning and possible banning.
Aside from being extremely general, this guideline is breaching our right to free speech. While there is the argument that we are not entitled to free speech inside CCPs game, such a statement (in my opinion) is simply ignorant. The fact is, we reside in a virtual world that promotes war, death and destruction, yet simple words from complete strangers mean more than frozen corpses floating in space. I want to reserve the right to express myself in any way I see fit, and others simply donĘt have to listen. Inside the game, if someone does not want to hear what I have to say they can simply click the block button. ThatĘs fact. Introducing language filters that can be turned on and off can further protect the virgin eyes of some more sensitive players.
Please note that I firmly support the idea of ending continuous harassment, but a little smack-talk during time of war should never be viewed as such.
Ultimately, the point is that those that petition for foul language/harassment (usually in a time of war) do so to create problems for those making the comments, not because they are legitimately offended but because they wish to harass the 'legal' way.
With that said, I am very disappointed with CCPs ability to filter legitimate and illegitimate claims of harassment. Smack-talk is just part of playing a role. I use it to increase my chances of getting called primary when my enemy isnĘt docked or cloaked. Like I said before, if someone doesnĘt like what I have to say, or how I say it, the game offers the ability for them not to listen.
Instead of warning/banning players for using foul language, players should be responsible for whatever content they wish to view. Period.

Background music - Background music should be chosen so it doesn't contain profanity, or contains very few profanity words. We understand that a lot of music does contain profanity, but some music revolve around it and will not be allowed, a few words are ok though.
So it is ok to let a few slip on videos on the forums, but not in local chat, I have seen some videos contain a lot of swear words, not to name the exact one. It has lasted for about 2 months and ISD hasn't thought about it twice, it contained atleast 30 or so breaches in the TOS for forums.

What rating does this game have?
Of course this forum is going to maintain a civil atmosphere to accomodate younger ppl and ppl that just plainly dont like to read swearwords all the time. And falling back on the old "free speech" thing isnt gonna work. next thing you'll have ****s creating the SS alliance still screaming "free speech!".
Policing is necessary because people will aways be *******s(<- rear end holes). And thats sad but true. -------------------------

On all games for Xbox and BF2 the ESRB rating will have next to it [Gameplay may change online] Imagine CCP using a VoIP for local chat, people could say whatever the **** they want, there is no way they could have evidence on it, but thank god that feature won't eve come out, ......godamn 9 year old newbs begging for isk....

Not only does this game promote war and killing it has slavery built into it's storyline, and is apparently still an accepted practice in some areas of the EVE universe. So does this mean as a black player if I complain that I am offended will this mean that CCP is in breach of its own rules?

Edited by: Haniblecter Teg on 18/11/2005 08:09:15 Foul langauge is fairly annoying, Ill give you that.
But what I dont understand is why you cant move to another channel, deny the private chat request, or erase teh email.
Somehow, your crusading soul feels the need to rid the world fo EVE of foul langauge (jesus, how mature is someone who refers to **** as foul langauge) when most everyone realizes that you can easily ignore those perpetraitors who feel the need to swear at you consistantly.
Grow some skin you wuss. I have particles of dirt uner my shoe with more backbone.

That's a great sig, Spec, but you'll have to remove an X after the patch.
