Hello,
In Jita I see people advertising things like "OMG ZOMG This guy messed up his contract buy it!!!1one!!"
And the items sell for more than the contract is asking for.
Naturally this is too good to be true so I check:
1) The contract price (example 500 million) yes, it really is 500 million... that is what I will pay.
2) The items. I click the blue "I" info button to ascertain the item is the item and not the rename. Yep, it's an officer mod that has a buy order for 500 M in that station.
I know its a scam, I know I'm missing something here, I know if I bought the contract something bad would happen but I'm not gonna.
So please, how does this scam work? what am I missing? |

It's a variation on the margin trading scam, simply put the player who is selling the item is also the one whose alt placed the buy order, you buy the item on contract, you then try and sell it to the buy order, the buy order then fails because the character who placed it doesn't have the isk to cover it.

Not that I can say 100%, but it sounds like a very typical scam type. Look again at the buy order, and look at what the minimum amount they will buy is. Usually they pick something that there wont be multiples of, and put up a couple buy orders with various characters, but minimum 3-4. So, you accept the contract and get 1, try to sell, and find out that you need 2-3 more, and are now screwed. |

its not a margin trading scam, it would be if you tried to sell to the buy order and you ended up with no item and not isk. seeing as you only end up with no isk but you get to keep a worthless item, the scam is actually on the contract. and it works because you didn't check the most important tab on the market window. "price history". |

"price history". Yeah, that's not how the margin trading scam works. When a margin trading buy order fails, you still have the item, you just don't get the ISK.
Getting the goods into the hands of the victim at more than their market value is the key to the margin trading scam. The buy order will fail when they try to sell to it, leaving them with the goods they overpaid for. You can get the goods into their hands either through clever sell orders (other stations in the system work well) or a contract. |

Don't forget, you can check the prices of any item throughout the game at eve-central.com.
But yes, this scam is just a matter of using bunk buy orders placed using margin trading, often along with inflated sell orders, to make the price of an item(s) in the contract look legitimate. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTzA_xesrL8 |
