Edited by: Scyrdein on 21/11/2005 12:22:34 Allright, I`ve started this thread to represent my opinion about UI. I dont mean any offence but there are my ideas about present UI and UI on test server...
Let`s begin... One of the painful problems in EVE is fonts.. since there are different language channels in EVE, eve uses unicode fonts, but how... It searches windows font directory for the first unicode font and use it as a font for all the other languages...
Is that is normal? Of course right!
But. I speak russian and eve uses a some kind of "Times New Roman" font with strokes and it is very hard to read it.. So, I cheated, and added in my windows directory a copy of "Arial Unicode" font with a name "1.ttf" so, EVE finds this font first and use it.. So I can have at least readable font as you can at the picture (first two words "test TEST" in english, another two in russian) And that doesn`t against EULA.

and what do we see on test server

Now english is are changed and is a problem to read.
My suggestion: Let`s unify all the fonts and use one unicode font for a chat. Like Arial Unicode, Tahoma and so on. And lets add a button to the chat window to let user choose font himself, may be even for each channel window.
Allright... Character screen...
Fist of all the new color looks bad.. especially when UI color is changed for blue like mine.
Picture
My suggestion: Since we can use custom colors for the UI let these colors be also used for these skill "tabs" or whaterer it is, that is right and for market, there is the same thing.. :)
And now... new character screen looks great, thats cool. But :) Old tabbed charscreen was also very compact and useful. So lets add a checkbox to the options menu to let user use "Old style character screen" with a few more tabs, thats all.
Now, Bio... at the moment it is possible to use ASCII art in bio like well known annoying Bunny :) but in the version on the test server it isn`t because of the new font and it is so small, I can hardly read it...
My suggestion: Since Bio allows writing only in english, lets use old font what is currently used on main server.
Picture
That small font is usually being used everywhere, lets use old one.. because as I said, it is possible to read such text, but sometimes eyes gonna blow up :DD
Now that...
Picture
I just like it. That sci-fi font just rocks :D A moment ago I wanted to make it changed back to
Picture
but i like both variants :D That`s great..
This sci-fi fonts will really rock with a small aligment fixes and readability improvements. At the moment old one is more smaller but readable :D
That`s all for the UI. Thank you for your attention.

Edit: Great write up on your font opinions if the devs listen to anything it will be written as well as this.

Edited by: Scyrdein on 21/11/2005 22:10:21 If you do this trick, you may need to backup your EVE\cache\Settings\pc.dat file, because part of this file respresent unicode fonts in your system.. If eve doesn`t find pc.dat it looks for the fonts in the system and save info about them in pc.dat (as it is being done after eve install) , so to make eve use another font, you need to delete or move pc.dat file somewhere else to make eve to rescan system fonts...

I have no idea why EVE still doesn't allow the user to select which fonts they want to use through the settings panel, seeing how they aren't hard-coded anymore. Would save so much of the whole font-related drama :<

I think the UI designer is a design ****. People ***** everytime they make some insane change that "looks" better on a super high end fancy LCD monitor, but looks like crap on a normal CRT, and works like crap.
CCP need to work on functionality instead of tuning fonts in every single frigging patch.
