As revealed now, the USA weren't the only ones spying on everyone. GB, Canada, Australia and New Zealand also do the same.
But the most ridiculous thing is: the names.
"Mastering the Internet" "Global Telecoms Exploitation"
This is what they were calling their programs.
And the oh-so-awesome name of their group:
"Five Eyes Electronic Eavesdropping Alliance"
Seriously?
Couldn't they find something more comic-book villain sounding monikers?
I mean their alliance sounds like the mentally challenged brother of S.P.E.C.T.R.E. whom they try not to mention because of the embarassment he causes for his evil conspiracy family. "You either need less science fiction or more medication."

But seriously. We've known for centuries they go to war under all manner of false pretenses. We've known for decades that they have no problem squashing individual rights in the name of supposedly popular policies with no regard to whether or not they work as intended. We've now known for years that they have bent and broken every rule they came up with to "protect" our privacy.
Now that pretty much all of it is laid bare for the population to see: SHOCK, HORROR, SURPRISE! Who woulda thunk that the same gaggle of wackos who thought bombing third-world countries after starving their populations with ~sanctions~ was a good idea and in "their best interests," could come up with this comically evil scheme for their own populace?

Usually on MSNBC or CNN touting the "everyone who is critical of this administration is a racist," line.
Not that the rethuglicans are anyone worthy of defense, but it's worth mentioning that Freeman, as with most of Hollywood are the Rush Limbaugh(s) of the left. They really don't give a damn whose rights are being violated so long as their guy is on top and their favorite government programs are being funded. |

This has been going on for ages. To be honest I think anyone is stupid for twittering using their real name where the wrong joke can get you arrested. Thing is, people used to laugh at East Germany and Russia etc where telling the wrong joke at work would get you informed upon and your house bugged, now these places probably have more free speech than UK, USA, so who's laughing now. |

Not really. The Huxley method has been worked splendidly at home, but 1984 has been the explicit foreign policy. Crush any group of people who do not organize as you dictate. Reduce their economies to rubble and send in the complicit fascist organizations to "rebuild," and leave the nation so impoverished that they rely on your "generosity," (food-aid) in order to survive.
Trouble is, the Huxley method is getting a little frayed around the edges. Warfare/Welfare states necessarily bankrupt themselves over time because they -have to- promise more than they take in by theft and the more they steal the more they cripple their economies. As the bread and circuses dry up, more people who are now dependent on that welfare go postal and the 1984 method becomes a necessity to keep the people in line.
So what happens when there isn't enough money to steal to keep the machine running? My guess would be martial law, price controls, and the return of true national/international socialism. The logical conclusion of what happens when you give a supposed majority of the population the right to monopolize the use of force in a geographical area: they get rid of anyone who disagrees with them. |

No need to control the population-- get let them addict themselves with consumerism and devolve their minds and sensibilities. I don't think government did that though. It just naturally arose when Adam Smith's "invisible hand" of market/capitalist forces got access to instanteous mass media communication. |

Yep, capitalism is definitely responsible for the authoritarian over-reach of governments who are diametrically opposed to free trade and voluntary interaction of free individuals. |

Not really shocking TBQH. I've read enough interviews with JA to assume he is aware that wiki is constantly monitored/infiltrated. He also makes no secret of the fact that he redacts information himself when he releases anything. I would not be surprised to find out he was coerced into seriously filtering or editing wiki himself. His latest meet-up with Google was quite interesting if you can find it. |

To be fair JA is viewing himself as a journalist with journalistic responsibilities, these include redactions of things that serve no purpose if released other than hurting innocent victims.
On the one hand I expect privacy, and on the other I expect a security system that functions. There is a balance to be found, and even if it is found in my mind it needs accountability and due process.
