LOL - I remember that - from the halfway line. I dont think he meant it tho - and I can't remember who it was against.
Gazzas free kick against Arsenal in the semi-final at Wembley for me as I was there.

I recall a certain Paul Gascoigne scoring a rather cheeky little goal against Scotland at Euro 96.

Even as I write this more and more goals are resuffacing in my memory, as a newcastle season ticket holder for almost 30 years ive seen some special goals from the likes of macdonald, beadsley, waddle etc, i could list a number of great goals ive seen especially from beardsley, i also remember glen hoddle scoring that volley against man u where he seemed to hang in the air, as for international goals, well the van basten goal has been mentioned, that was special, platt against belgium, maradonna's goal against us in 86, not the hand of god, also george weah scoring after that run from his own penalty box for ac milan.
As for the best game ive ever seen, i'd say its easily the 1970 world cup final, brazil vs italy. i was only 3 at the time so i didnt really get to appreciate until a lot l8r, but without doubt the single best advert for football as the beautiful game.
one more thing all you rugby loving and american football nublars can blow me, thats not football

Maradona's goal in 1986 against England is the best goal in history, there's no question about it.
As a side note, being from Argentina myself and living in UK, I'm amazed about how the British people are still bitter about the "Hand of God" issue

Zlatans goal against Italy sending them out of the last championship, that was gold for so many reasons.
Remind me about The Maze.

Agreed! He did a couple more like that during the season.
Hard to say best goal ever, i could recount about a dozen by Bergkamp that were just pure class.

Would have to be that goal Best scored in the states.. the one where he went round in the box in a figure of eight a couple of times, round 3 or so defenders and simply rammed it into the net.
Absolute total genius. -----------------------------------------

The best goals are always scored at the highest level of football, because the drama of the whole event adds to them and gives it extra credence. A goal against some comedy 3rd division scottish team could never compare to one scored against one of the top sides in the world with the added pressure of a big occasion, thats my belief anyway.
Also, we talking invidiuals or team efforts? I'll have to get thinking on the team ones but heres my top list of the individual ones that i can recall :)
Roberto Carlos's outside of the foot one round the wall from 30 odd yards at le tourneouir (sp) against france was pretty special, obviously you've got the van basten and maradona ones which i dont think anyone will ever forget. Baggio scored a great goal at italia 90 against the czechs i think, after receiving the ball on the halfway line. Someone mentioned Best earlier on as well, i think the one he scored in the European Cup final against benfica was his best if someone can find a better one please say. Nayim scored from almost the halfway line for zaragoza in i think 94/95 season against arsenal (champs lge), but i dont reckon that counts because seaman pretty much tipped it into the net. The dozy gimp.
