Are learnign skills a good idea early on?

Yes.
From what I understand, taking things up to Adv Level 3 is the best thing to do, as soon as possible. Level 3 in any of the adv things usually pays off the fastest (if you use that trait often that is). Don't get charisma to adv lvl 3 if you're never going to train any charisma based skills...that would be a waste of time.
Most people don't get learning skills "early" on because it can be boring unless you have skills to keep you occupied already.

Dude, go advanced level 4, not 3. Level 4 still takes less time than level 5 of the basic skill did, and provides just as much benefit.
And yes, they're worth it in the end. Though those of you who aren't as patient as I am may go crazy waiting, as they take a while to train.

If you want to be unable to have fun go for adv 4 immediatly.
Else skills you need to have fun/use modules: mechanic, shield operations, engineering, afterburner, hull upgrades, repair systems, electronics to name a few to 1.
Then basic learnings to 3-4. The basics and others usefull for your career to 3 also science 3 cybernetics 1-3 for implants.
Then bigger ship get out of that frigate and associated skills to 3-4
After that adv learnings to 3-4. They cost 4 mil plus each, so not very affordable early on.
Train for big ship/t2 all skills 4-5

Don't get the advanced learning skills till later. Train the learning skills up along with everything else, and whenever you have training time to burn, turn on one to level 5 to get towards the advanced learning skill for that skill. - Proud member of the [23].

Great advice IMO. I have trained basic learning skills up to lvl 4. However trainign to lvl 5 take 6 days + which is a lot of time when you are new like me (still on the eval license). I do some training though when I have no other skill to train which take up all time until next login.

Buy them and get them to level 1 or 2 early on but imho dont worry about getting to 5 or the advanced learning for the moment. best to mix is up and have a bit of fun but once you start needing to train level 5 of many skills or onto harder skills like battlecruiser I'd start training them.

I agree with the others in this thread. Don't worry about getting your basic learning skills higher than 2 or 3 until you've trained enough of the other skills that you can fly the ships you want to fly and do the things you want to do.
Personally, I didn't put in the time on the advanced learning skills until I'd been playing about four months and was able to pilot a battleship. Sure, it cost me some training time but at least I was able to keep myself entertained during the month it took to get my advanced learning skills all up to 4.

Edited by: Sharcy on 29/11/2005 15:39:00 Train Analytical Mind and Instant Recall to 4 first; this will get your Memory and Intelligence attribs up. With that, the others will train faster; train Learning to 4, then Spatial Awareness and Iron Will to 4. This will take you about a week, but after that, everything you'll train will train much faster. Save the Rank 3 Learning skills for later; too expensive and too long in the beginning.
See the EVE Master Data Sheet (in the Skills forum) to see how it's all connected... very helpful!

I believe the actual perfect-timing route is roughly: mem1 int1 lea1 m2 i2 l2 ... m4 i4 l4 m5 m5+1 m5+2 m5+3 i5 i5+1 i5+2 i5+3 m5+4 i5+4 ... then perc / will / char as needed.

I'm actually thinking of getting my adv. intel and mem to lev 5.. and getting all of my basics to lev 5. and train the other adv. lev to a lev 3 or 4.. before I start mass skilling..? I know it's time consuming.. and all but isn't it worth it.. I mean, I do have my xbox 360.. I could train all my adv skills to lev 5.. is it really worth it for all of them.. If I want to be more of a fighter and a manu..?

Keep in mind that the more you invest in learning skills, the longer it takes for them to pay off. The low levels of the initial skills will of course pay off almost immediately, and as long as you go after the initial levels of the advanced skills right after level 5 of the initial, you'll still see a good payoff.
Generally speaking, though, you'll need to play a long time to see payoff on the high levels of the advanced learning (for example, getting learning itself to 5 will take between 200 and 350 days, depending on your other stats, before you will see a real benefit). If you don't plan to play for at least a year, don't go after it.
But assuming you're in it for the long haul, get as much learning as early on as you can stand to. Once you've got them done, they will more than pay for themselves in the speed of character progression you'll be able to manage.

Personally I'd invest upto and including l4 advanced.
There again I knew I was going to be in for the long run.
Although I'd also attempt to specialise - hence if I wanted to end up being a fighter I'd do INT & PERC to 4 and then probably go learn some fun skills.

The time from 0-4 is less than from 4-5, while the extra benefits are not great. So especially in the beginning, with plenty of other skills to train too, I don't think it's worth it...

Going to adv lvl 4 is probably correct but what you old-timers forget is that you need to earn money for those 5 mill a piece adv learning skill books.
I myself (as a 2 week noob) have trained basic learning skills up to lvl 4 and have mixed in useful skills in between. Also remember that getting the first levels of any skill is pretty quick and that with all skills it is a diminishing returns to all skills. You gain most advantage (in relation to time spent) of training the first 2 levels of skills.
I think learning lvl 5 of basic learning skills take longer than the all the 4 previous levels.
Of course you could spend all time doing delivery missions and training learning skills but then you might miss the chance to get the +1 implants that you get early on from storyline mission. Need to put that into the equation when finding the optimal training path. Having fun is even more important.
Bu I do have more than 1/2 my SP in learning skills ATM.

Get them all to level 4 basic, it should take a week, starting with mem and int and learning first.
Once that's done get all the skills you want to level 4. Might take a few months.
When you have everything you want at level 4, you should be pretty rich by then, go do your adv skills to level 4, learning to level 5, I would just leave charisma at level 4. Should take about a month, so either take a break from the game or deal with the pain.
After that, take all the stuff you want to level 5 and enjoy the rest of your eve career.

i played for my first year (yes a year!!) without training any learning skills. I now have 25million skillpoints and am an expert deep space miner / PvPer.
remember that its your brain, not your skill-points which determines how good you are.

True, but with learning skills you would have had those 25m points a couple of months sooner...
