I was just wondering what hauling means in EVE? Read it on many posts regarding mining. I just started a few days ago and am currently working to get an Iteron ship for mining, because it has a big capacity. My current ship has only 360 so I have to go between mining spot and station every 2-3 mins :S

Hauling is using your industrial ship to move stuff. In the case of mining, it's picking up the ore jettisoned by the miners, and carrying it to the station.

Isn't that quite risky? Mining stuff and just leaving it hanging in the air O_o?

Meh, not usually. The jet cans last for an hour or longer, and if you don't mine in crowded systems, the chance of ore thieves striking is terribly small.

It can be if you are using a default can jettisoned from your ship. These hold A LOT of ore - something like 27,000. It's risky to use these in even high security areas as it means that anyone can just fly by and collect your ore. In low security it's plain stupid because someone WILL take your stuff.
You get around this by training up on your Anchoring skill and buy a secure container that is password protected. You then jettison this into space and 'Anchor' it in place or else someone be able to scoop it up and take it. These hold far less than the default container, but still enough to fill up or industrial ship.
In my case my character is Caldari and I use an Osprey to mine with three Miner 2's. I 'JetCan' into a secure container. This means that I move my ore from my ships hold into the container while mining. Once the can if filled up I then fly back to the station and get into my industrial ship (Badger II) and go collect it.

Hmm, ok, I get it now :)
So that's another skill I need to train then o_o

It's only 750 skill points to be able to use secure containers.
And he's exaggerating the threat of ore thieves anyway.

And in the next game update (a couple of weeks probably) ore thieves will be tagged as such, and you can shoot them.

Oh one more thing, was just checking these secure containers and they seem to be rather big. So I have to take them to the spot with my hauler? How long do these last in space?

Lizan: They last until someone steals them. And if they're anchored and passworded, nobody can. You can only anchor them in 0.7 and below though.

Mining in an Indy is very bad. You can only fit one miner to it, so it'll mine half as efficiently as a frig. Use it to haul, as already stated, and mine in something better. A good thing to shoot for early on is an Osprey or Scythe, which get mining bonuses that make them almost as good as a BS at high levels. If you're not Cal or Min you can use almost any cruiser for better efficieny than a frig, and many times as much as an Indy.

Mine into your frigate/cruiser in .8+ and shuttle back and forth from base to rock using insta-bm's. Basically you set a bookmark 12-14 km PAST your target, then when you warp to it, you land right on top of it and can dock instantly.
Jetcan mining can be bad, don't mine in highway systems, mine in backwaters, the lower security and the more isolated the better.
Secure containers can be used but there comes a point where you can fill em up in minutes. Some miners I know brag about being able to fill a jet can in like 30 minutes.

I guess I am exagerating a little, but it did happen to me so I was only warning what can happen. Always better to be informed and not lose your well earnt ore when your new and every scrap counts. The Anchoring skill is very cheap and you only need lvl 1 to start with. that will anchor a secure container in 60 seconds.
Filling a container in 30 minutes shouldn't be that hard. I fill two giant secure containers in about an hour and 15 minutes. That's enough for my Badger II with cargo extenders and skills. A few less rats to deal with and I could get to 30 minutes each container.

Only you can shoot them or everyone can shoot them?

Don't use sec cans everywhere you mine. It's a pain in my eye whenever I see sec cans littering a belt --------- Another messy sig I've created

They aren't talking about filling secure containers in 30 mins, they are talking about a jet can which is 27k m3
I can carry 26.5k m3 using containers in my cargohold to give me that bit extra, that with my iteron V.

Itty V has lots of low slots for cargo expanders then you put cargo containers in that hold more than the space they take up(!!)
And the skill has to be trained up for an itty V which gives you more space.
About 25000 m3 is easy without buying anything expensive.
You can change the name you post with by selecting the character (4 lines down from message box) when you reply. Mine always defaults to my alt for some reason. (alphabetical?)

Hi,
I've heard just recently about using secure cans inside your industrial ship to increase it's capacity. Could someone explain to me how this works? Do you need to do anything to the cans first, or do you just put them in like you would any cargo? How do you put the cargo in the cans? When I've tried, it just goes into the hold, next to the cans..

Edited by: Newbie Ned on 30/11/2005 19:45:21 When you buy the can you need to assemble it then just right click and select open container.
This can be done with the can in your hold. (Just put it there like any other cargo)
The big ones take up 3000 m3 but hold 3900 m3, I think.

Yes, you can do that.
The large Secure Containers displace 3000 m3 but, using fine Tardis technology, the interiors can hold 3900 m3.
There are some things that cannot be placed inside Secure Containers (such as Uranium, Plant Seeds, and various other things), but overall it's very handy to have access to free extra space.

which is why i do use Sec cans but i scoop them up with the badger2 at the end of the day(with full space mods i can hold 3 giants), also easier to setup again another day if my cans are in the badger as i never know when a belt might be mined clean before i login.
