All industries work this way; but especially software. You get what you can out of your current line-up, but at some point everyone benefits by making a leap forward onto a new platform that can take advantage of new technologies, new paradigms and incorporate lessons learned from the first generation.
In this case, CCP has had over 10 years with an amazing product to learn and prepare for their next offering. Expect something awesome within the next several years, but do NOT expect development on EVE to start up again in earnest. It simply doesn't make sense financially or technologically.
I understand your point but I think it does make sense to expand on EVE if CCP shows a further inability to expand into new markets. |

It's made sense for the last 10 years, they aren't planning on changing that. In fact, DUST is based on the same concept of continuous iteration... which is unique for a console game.
As to the OP:
Quote:So for the past couple years we have seen extremely mild (almost unnecessary) tweaking and polishing of stuff already in the game. We recently got a new launcher and undock button, a few ships were tweaked here and there.
This troll could have had potential, but you went a little too far from reality for it to be considered adequate for these forums. To carve a successful niche for yourself in EVE you need to be able to out sell, out produce, out fight,-á out run, or out wit your competitors. If you can do none of the above, your only option is to complain on the forums that somehow you are at a disadvantage using the exact same tool set-áas the rest of the player base. |

EVE will develop when CCP finishes fixing the backlog of issues they ignored for close to a decade. Ignoring fixes and focusing on shiny new features is exactly why they have to spend so much time now fixing stuff.
In the long term, they will hopefully have a balance between new features and iterating on existing features to make sure they keep up with the times.

Incarna is exactly the kind of thing this thread is about. That wasn't really a new feature at all it brought nothing of value to the game despite an enormous investment by CCP. What new things could be added? How about content? This latest "expansion" was supposed to be about exploration but no new content related to exploration was added. How about more live events throughout the universe?
At 2012 fanfest I attended a roundtable dubbed "esports" that was really about the possibility of creating a tournament system within the game itself. Great conversations were had, everyone that attended contributed their email addresses so CCP could follow up with the discussions, but since that time no further conversations were ever started with the attendees. I'm sure there have been lots of great discussions on ways that the game could be improved, but few ever get anywhere.
I want CCP to succeed and thrive. However, I don't give a crap about Dust. I'm happy to pay my subscription fee x 3 every month but I want to see that money invested where I play the game. |

I'm jumping on the "ain't broke don't fix it" bandwagon.
I'll take slow progress over the next 20 years rather than an explosive amount of new content paired with Free To Play and Microtransactions. I know it might not seem like these concepts are related, but the more conservative CCP is with Eve development (and man are they conservative/careful now... holding meetings about industrial rebalancing, etc) the less chance there is that a horrible revamp of some kind will bring the game down. Seeing as every other MMO on the market has basically died a fiery death by the 10 year mark from one stupid decision or another, I think it's great that CCP is moving slowly and carefully.
I really think we don't need any more ships/mods unless they're extremely well designed. There are already hundreds of ships, and CCP is right when they say that it's likely that new additions at this point just end up hurting the game. If anything, the game would be improved going the other way, aka making T2 more expensive and bringing the named mods back to usable status now that some rebalance passes have happened...
That said, I hope CCP is keeping some "premier features" in development. Even a slow careful dev cycle requires some groundbreaking features every once in a while, and since Apocrypha nothing has really taken Eve to a new level (Incarna doesn't count.... unless they finish it). |

For those desperate for another Apocrypha-scale expansion, CCP is working on it. The published general idea is that you will build new stargates to take you to previously unexplored places. So I guess CCP decided the thing that made Apocrypha the "best expansion ever" was Unknown Space and they're hoping they can duplicate that success by duplicating the expansion.

Lowsec, into the dirty underbelly of New Eden it is supposed to be. Yes there are already threads with fine suggestions on how this should be done but I cant be bothered to link them again.
But as for the OP, I am tending to agree now, alot of fixing and tweaking has been done and that was a fine thing. I think it is now time for more new content. Trust me, I almost know what I'm doing. |

Shouldn't have stuck your head above the parapet then.
Personally I'm happy that so work and time has gone into fixing and balancing the basic game the last few expansions. What would be the point of rushing in a load of new content if the core of the game was still riddled with as many problems as it was. NBSI shall be the whole of the Law |

Maybe the reason it appears to be bare bones isn't because of lack of resources (I really doubt that). Maybe it's because CCP had no idea how to make an FPS, then they did a bunch of work they apparently had to scrap for a new engine? or something. PS3 architecture, something, something. (Ironic part being they made this same mistake for WiS/Incarna and clearly didn't learn from it)
Yes I think they are taking the interpretation of First Person Shooter a little literally.
I don't agree they have showered the Dust team with the correct resources.
If that was the case were are the other racial suits? Why is the concept art for an amarr tank literally a thumbnail cut from a silhouette worksheet? Why when questioned about full racial symmetry the devs are either evasive or say stuff like "it will be out but not as soon as we would like".
This is all suggestive that they just don't have the people to create the art assets, or that they did and said people have been asked to work on other stuff. |

Incarna was made a disaster by thier ambition. They broke the cardinal rule of game design, they let artistic prode get in the way of the proposed game play. And rather scrap or down grade the highly expesive avatar models they tried to recoup thier mistake by shoehorning in microtransactions, thats didn't fit anyway. Whats the point of vanity items in a single player experience.
They could have made incarna work if the avatars hadn't been so expensive and grahics-card melty. But they chose to go with the shiney.
Incarna will work they day everyone has the rigs to allow for it. Right now, not a chance.

Okay I'll take this in a civilized manner.
1) It's is not that CCP is incapable of developing anything new, it's that they've chosen not to because we told them to. Look at the riots of Jita after Incarna. They're doing new things but in small incremental ways. Our largest concern as a community is that CCP moves on ahead to new features without ensuring that the old ones are maintained. If insist on letting those old features die in favor of the new ones then you're going to remain a d VERY unpopular person here.
2) DUST isn't harming EVE development in the least. They always maintain the same teams for EVE. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=3295939#post3295939
3) DUST was not a engine rework like Incarna was, they're using the Unreal 3 engine so that part was very well established. The complicated part was working on CREST, the API that allows for a multitude of applications to access TQ and interact with it. They had to work with CREST a lot to get that connection between the two games to work. But as you can see now DUST is getting all of its holes filled in. All the factions are getting their equivalent suits and weapons. Not much of this is really "new" either.
4) EVE being a 10 year old game makes it fairly unique. It needs a lot of maintenance. They got to make sure features and thing built 5, 10 years ago still work and function today and/or are improved upon. There was certainly a lot of part of the interface that weren't very intuitive the first time. It's better to make "new" features by making the old ones more accessible and usable again. It's more efficient to add things that way.
The good news is, we're probably a year or so away from some really awesome new stuff happening. T1 tiericide is done and T2 migth even be finished by the end of the year. After that we might see some changes to industry, PI, and null sec mechanics and cap ships. I cant think of anything else that they really need to fix...and from there we can start getting some truly new things again :D
Among the things CCP has talked about as new developments being: -Player built stargates -Incarna style explorations -Ship damage and shield/armor/hull reactions to shots. :D
And we still have DX11 and tessellation to look forward to as well as procedural lighting (so that lasers light up the hull of my paladin :D) The Drake is a Lie |
