Assume that you're bashing rocks in HiSec. You can get around 6m ISK from refined minerals per Mackinaw/Ore mine episode.
Assume that Plex costs about 600m ISK then you only need to fill your Mackinaw 100 times over a course of a month. If you want to break that down to daily targets all you need is to out and mine four times a day and you've got the money for a Plex and some change left over.
There are perhaps other ways to earn ISK but at the time (busy in RL at the moment) I don't have the time to investigate and besides New Eden needs someone to bash rocks so it may as well be.
But if you can do 100 trips a month then you can play for free. If you can do 200 trips a month on one account then you can use the other account to try to earn money by other means.

Forgive me for asking, but what are 'HiSec Islands'?

Try mining about 10 jumps outside a trade hub... or go to dotlan, find a system with lots of belts, then ones with less then 1,000 jumps in 24 hours. The belts you will find are much better. |

High Sec Islands:
Pockets of high sec, entirely surrounded by lowsec and nullsec, with no direct connection to the rest of High.
They tend to be pretty dead. Steve Ronuken for CSM 9!-á I'm starting early :) Handy tools and an SDE conversion Twitter: @fuzzysteve on Twitter |

They, no doubt, being the untanked miners carrying their wares...

If anything, they should make roids smaller and reduce the cycle time on mining laser/harverster while keeping the same total m3/hours. It makes the mining operation require more input.
Well only if they find a way to prevent bots from targetting. If not, you just made change making legit mining more of a pain and bots just laugh at it... |

My advice is to get up in the morning and mine. I usually fill 1 barge full of ore before going to work (around 13:00 game time) as the belts near trade hubs are down to belly button lint (a warp-in beacon and nothing else) when I get home. I personally deplete the +10% ores while I twirl my mustache and cackle with glee.
If you really are unemployed, I strongly recommend keeping a routine of getting up in the morning and not staying up late. It will be very hard to get back into a routine compatible with employment. I speak from experience. While it may seem that Eve is kicking you in the jimmies at the same time that life is kicking you there, this isn't the case. Stuff changes and you have to adapt.
Lowsec belts have huge asteroids, but the belt rats can sometimes appear in battlecruisers, so if you're afk, you'll be in your pod quicker than you can misspell "toot sweet". And the other players can be trouble too. |

Out of EVE gaming, utilizing other people's skill to make money is not easy. The skill to organize, manage, motivate and resolve conflicts among people to achieve business goal is a professional skill itself. Not to mention that the invested capital is always at risk.
