I've been on Eve for a couple weeks and I'm certainly enjoying it - but there's one thing I've been wondering about and I haven't found the information anywhere.
When you get hit by a weapon, does it deal damage only within the category of EM/Kinetic/Thermal/Explosive?
I understand the resistance principle of gaining {1-Original resist)x modifier to get the new resist (so that no one ever gets 100% resistance), and the penalties for multiple modules. But a lot of weapons also mention 'base damage' - is this something outside of the four resistable categories?
I've read too (using eve-search) that missiles and the like have a blast radius and obviously range/type of impact, etc. is important - but is all damage in the game based on the four variables that you can harden/resist against, or is there some damage that only repair modules can soak up, even if you had (technically impossible, but hypothetically) 100% resists?
Apologies if this has been posted before.

Yes.
Lets say a gun does 100 em and 50 thermal damage. The target has 60% em and 35% thermal resistance. So to calculate actual damage you do: 100*0.6 + 50*0.35
So if you have 100% resists, then damage would always be 0.

Thanks. I'd been thinking the 'base damage' attribute you sometimes see, was being added on to other damage (and couldn't be stopped), meaning that I was going a bit over the top with repair modules. This now brings hardeners and resist plates back into the balance

Not true, it depends on how you got that resistance. I don't know the math and some people say it doesn't work. With each "Tactical Shield Level" (If you get your resistance from shield hardners) has a chance to reduce penitration of the shield. Which means penitration of the resistance itself. Which I believe thermal does it best. Don't quote me on that. Just what the skill says and what others have said about thermal damage.
Quote: Bonus: 5% reduced chance of damage penetrating the shield.

I'd thought the damage penetration was only concerned when your shield was in the low end of the scale (25% and lower), that a % of the damage will seep through. Tactical shield maniuplation was just to reduce the level further... Don't know for sure, but this was my interpretation. Life sucks, get a #'n helmet. -Denis Leary |
