I have, once again, resubbed after a year of break. Mostly because I saw tons of changes have been made for small ships, which is my area of interest (solo/small gang pvp).
Since null-sec isn't the place to get solo/small gang pvp, and low-sec piracy is dreadfully boring, I'm thinking of doing FW. But, I think I have a better idea, and please correct me where I am wrong because I don't know much about FW. So in order to be able to battle other players in FW I will have to join a corp that is affiliated with one of the faction militias. This will make it impossible for my character to travel to hi-sec areas of space owned by the opposite faction, correct? This is problematic, even with an alt to do market/hauling. Not to mention I'd be limiting my choice of targets.
I wanted to find out if anyone has done the following and how well it works: Since FW is in low-sec, anyone can shoot at anyone. This means I don't really need to join a faction to shoot at FW pilots. So why not just remain in my own 1-man corp and go looking for solo FW pilots that do plexes and shoot at them? My concern, though, is how much of a sec status hit will I be getting for, well, basically piracy?
TL;DR How well does solo piracy against FW soloers work, as opposed to actually joining a faction for FW and soloing that way? |

I fight in fw plexes but stay out of fw because I get many more fights than when I was in faction war. This is simply because I am not blue to an entire side of the war and therefore have many more targets.
However you do get sec status hits if you attack first and the player is not themselves below negative ten. The amount of hit depends on the sec status of the player you fight and the system sec status. Podding is the main thing to avoid if you are worried about sec hits. CCP introduced tags which you can buy to boost your sec status.
There are pluses and minuses to joining here is an off the cuff list of pluses and minuses of joining fw:
Pluses to joining:
1) No sec status hits as long as you only fight other faction or pirates. (but you will find neutrals who are not pirates in plexes that you won't be able to fight)
2) You can fight the enemy militia at gates and by stations without worrying about gate/station guns. (however note ccp did away with gcc so gate and station guns will only shoot you if you start the fight right there. Moreover they won't continue to shoot after you warp off)
3) You can make isk by running plexes and or fw missions.
Downsides to joining:
1) fewer fights in plexes since you will be blue to a large percent of pilots in and around plexes. (non fw players can open plexes they just don't run the timer or get lp for runnign it)
2) You will be locked out of stations if they flip to the enemy militia. (Pirates can dock anywhere. This imo also leads to more pvp because you can more quickly reship/repair/reload and get back into the fight.)
