I've been in and out of eve for years but never figured out how to get into research or industry. I'd like to know what are some good things to get started in and if they can eventually make some good ISK. |

... start?
If you want to make money doing research, reaserch the market and decide on a couple BPOs or BPCs that you think sell well. Buy the BPOs and research them. Sell the researched BPOs or the BPCs.
If you want to make money doing manufacturing, research the market and decide on a couple products that you think sell well for a decent profits. Buy the BPOs and research them. Build the resulting things.
If you've been around for a while and have some capital, I'd suggest starting with Invention and T2 manufacturing. Get an invention toon and a copy monkey, then when they're ready set up a medium caldari POS and a set of the cheaper module BPOs (since they can be entirely unresearched, NPC price shouldn't be over 1b (can't look up the est value of my module BPOs atm)), then invent what the market deems profitable and what moves enough to sell quickly. This is EVE - Everybody Versus Everybody.

This is the SINGLE most important part of getting into industry that most people completely ignore. Like anything in RL or here in Eve, it takes work to do it right. Learn the markets. I mostly manufacture rigs and T2 stuffs (no ships), and I never enter into a build without know what I can sell them for and what my ACTUAL costs are for the builds, and where I can sell them for a decent profit (hint: I never sell at Jita). The research goes the same for selling prints or selling goods: do the research, optimize the skills needed (that includes the Trade skills), and give it a try. Find a good Industrial corporation. The best way to learn something is to find people who are doing it successfully and do it with them. |

My 2 isk.
Manufacturing
1. Find a product with profit margin that satisfies you. 2. Buy copies for it. 3. Build / Sell. 4. Buy BPO if you are happy with the results. Hint: Some people tend to think manufacturing is some sort of step by step progress like build ammo>mods>ships>caps and then t2. This is false, you will get your head around it much easier if you forget this mindset and focus on the fact that market is alive organism that will change constantly and some products have higher demand than others. You can make great isk with the most simple items in the game.
Science
You can apply this to your manufacturing and save money from copies and BPOs.
1. Find a product with profit margin that satisfies you.
2. Research BPO. (There are options for this, people make it sound simple but you will soon realize that you ''CANT'' do this in Highsec NPC stations, so you need POS to make money, either your own or big null alliance, there are no highsec corps that would willingly donate slots)
3. Copy BPO into BPCs, sell or use for your manufacturing. Copying has same slot problem as research.
4. You can also sell BPO, but I would go with copying.
5. Invention you can do without hassle, there are plenty of slots open.
For both these ''careers'' you need to have liquid cash to invest. And if you invest blindly you investment wont profit, so there is way more work to be done than in ie. incursions. You will easily get into Indy/Science if you want to get into it. Most likely forgot something, but yeah, have isk as assets, turn it into materials and bps and consume them, dont bother mining. |

There are, however, plenty of low-sec stations with open slots.
If you're starting out, you're likely using fairly cheap BPOs. so a fast frigate (preferably covops, but the mwd/cloak option works) can get you in and out of the system with an appropriate station. Just do your research first. Steve Ronuken for CSM 9!-á I'm starting early :) Handy tools and an SDE conversion Twitter: @fuzzysteve on Twitter |
