I just came back from a 3yr break. I guess with some old skills that were removed I have ~2mil SP immediately available. I am trying to decide between a raven or Dominix to run lvl 4 missions. I only have 138mil ISK so while I can have the skills for a raven in about 24hrs I can't afford to buy one,
If I train a sentry Dominix I can have everything but T2 sentry drones in about 3 days. Then it is a 33d train fir T2 sentries. The big appeal to the dominix is #1 I like the dominix a lot, #2 it is WAY cheaper. I have about 10hrs per week to play so I can't afford to replace many lost ravens. Searching the forums indicates the Dominix is the safest (and perhaps most boring) level 4 mission runner.
So: Are T2 sentries necessary for the dominix? Am I better off to run lvl 3 complexes and fit a Raven?
Thank you in advance guys!
Here are the 2 fittings I'm considering: Dominix Raven |

Ouch. That's over 5.5mil per drone instead of 1.1mil for tier 2 or 150k for tier 1. |

T1 sentries are fine.
They used to be very hard to use because of shorter optimal and worse tracking, but now the dominix starts with better bonuses than 2xT2 omnis used to give it. ie a dominix+ 2x omnis now, has extremely usable T1 sentries.
You might have to use one of the other 3 "racial sentries" to reach longer targets, but that -was- entirely normal for the dominix for 10 years, and is still normal for the navy dominix. ie the whole garde IIs reach everything all of the time is a very recent thing.
Use faction sentries once you stop losing drones..

Thanks everyone! I guess one more question in case anyone reads this far: Is the Navy Raven really that superior to the Dominix in the long run? I'm seeing the 2bil price tag and im not understanding what makes it so much more valuable than the Dominix. |

Yeah I'm just looking at fitting costs which are absolutely insane on an optimal Navy Raven setup. It seems to price out about 2x as much as a Navy Dominix. Any idea why? |

Hm - you mentioned that in the other thread, but I'm scratching my head over what sort of fitting cranks up a Navy Raven setup to ... what was it? 2 billion ISK? I can't understand it unless they're using a lot of faction or deadspace gear, or T2 rigs ... which in my opinion would make the Navy Raven more trouble than it's worth, in a loot-pinata sense.
Seriously: using a full T2 setup, or meta-4 cruise launchers until you've got the skills for the T2's, and maybe a Dread Guristas XL shield booster, shouldn't set anyone back 2 billion. Lots of small reasons.
Deadspace shield stuff is better than deadspace armor stuff for PVE, so deadspace shield is more expensive than deadspace armor. Examples of the budgeting - eanms are passive + don't turn off when neuted out, so invulns have more resistance. the invuln disadvantage really doesn't matter in pve - ergo they are better.
Also armor ships have to put tank and gank in the same slots, so people tend to default to shield when they don't have to tackle.
dominix has several more T2 mods on a pimped fit. ie damage mods. those are slots that just remain cheap...
You can make a navy domi (a) hit stupidly hard at midfield range and (b) plenty expensive if you shield fit. |

Just use T1 sentries for now, they are more than sufficient. That said, training for T2 would certainly give you a good boost in dps. The dominix fit you linked is okay, but don't fit a MJD. If you are using sentries then you'd never want to be away from them. And the tractor beams are worthless too imo. Fit something else in the mid and small/medium reps in the top slots to rep your drones. Repping the drones would put the aggro on you entirely and not your drones. Just make sure to fit a good enough tank since all damage will be coming your way. |

Wait. You think the incessant babble about MJD sentry Domis all over this forum is about people jumping away from their drones?
Sigh.
MJD to get range, then drop sentries. Or not; you can sit in the fray as well, but you'd likely want a bit more tank for that, meaning you have to cut back a bit on DDAs. |

They are 2 very different ships. You will need to find out how you like to play, I personally hate being tied down by drones and of the 2 would go for the raven. You will need T2 cruise launchers though, but can start without them. Best bet is jump on the test server and see which you prefer.
As to needing T2 sentries if you running a drone boat, then absolutely yes.. its the same as asking if you need T2 guns or missiles on your Battleship.

It's like arguing T2 guns vs Meta 4. No it's not mandatory, but then again if thats your philosphy why not spend 2 hours doing each mission with an assault frigate?
T2 Sentries should be first on your to-do list after you get T2 Omnis, followed by Gallente Battleship V and Drone Interfacing V. ______

As much as I'm a missile user at core, dont fly what you cant afford to lose therefore: domi.
I mean, it's soooooooooooooooooooooooo dull, but it's safe and effective.
Hell I have one with NO guns and a single repper/hardener and it can complete pretty much anything without much thought.
Edit: Also, faction sentries kick ass and you shouldnt lose them. I used them before getting T2 and never lost a single one. |

You're going to end up in a rattlesnake.
Start with T1 sentry domi and save/train toward navy scorpion.
Max out your navy scorpions skills first as all will transfer to the RS.
Then train up the drones more and move over to RS when all your drones are T2. |

if your looking at a sentry boat. navy domi is a waste of your time
it doesn't have the bonus to sentries the regular domi has
i am currently running a regular domi with faction sentries in null and can run forsaken hubs solo all day long. working on training everything up for full t2 fit. i have zero guns on my ship and rely solely on drone dps.
as far as the MJD fit goes i used to run that. half the time i would end up leaving my drones on accident and lose them, i no longer fit an mjd EVER to my domi. warp in to an anom at 70km's....i don't use a ship tracking enhancer.....align to station and drop my wardens. once they get within range of the gardes i pull my wardens and drop them to finish off the re |

Also Drone Interfacing 5 and Gallente Battleship 5 are very important. T2 drones are a huge improvement over T1
As for Navy Raven vs Dominix the Raven requires much less micromanagement. You don't need a 2 billion ISK fit unless you're trying for a cap stable fail fit.
As the poster above said the regular Domi is what you want because of the drone bonuses. |

A medium shield booster on a battleship... It might be permatank but not much tank. Of course if you manage aggro you could make it work I guess. I was referring to those that buy faction and deadspace invulns and all the bling to get a whole room aggro permatank. |

For an L4 drone boat, T2 sentries aren't mandatory, but they're recommended, I'd say. The extra range and firepower does make a difference. (However, faction sentries are actually more durable than T2's.)
As for shield boosters in missions ... I'm a firm believer in pulse-tanking over perma-tanking. If something goes sideways, you need a lot of reps, and you need them fast. if your trying to shield tank a regular dominix it isn't guna work anyways. 5 mid slots dedicated to hardners boost amp and booster is guna ruin the fit of your ship.
if you were running a navy domi it would work great....ive used a navy domi for about 2 days before, but if your using a sentry based domi the 5 mid slots of the domi will take away from your cap recharge and leave you a sitting duck, or having to warp in and out wasting time and losing money.
gallente ships are leaned more towards armor tanking with more low slots than mids.
but the OP is about t2 sentries so im going to guestimate here that the OP wants to run a sentry boat which IS NOT a navy domi therefore stick with your faction setries in a regular domi, armor tank it, blow up so rats, and while your doing that train for t2 to get the longer range on even the faction sentries (if you dont wanna spend the money on t2's the skills will still help with t1 or sentry drones) and have fun |

You can easily run dread large shield booster and make it cap stable on a T1 domi. With its new bonuses you don't really need omni's. That will leave room for 4 x DDA's and mag stabs it you choose to put guns on it. No space for a prop mod though if you want a decent tank. The thick plottens... |

Remember the mentality of posters here before you ask a question:
x.. Blitzers will insist on everything T2,cuz if you don't deal absolutely MAXIMUM DAMAGE on every single shot you're doing it wrong, are a complete loser, and should go back to WoW. x.. EFT Warriors will insist on everything T2,cuz if you don't deal absolutely MAXIMUM DAMAGE on every single shot you're doing it wrong, are a complete loser, and should go back to WoW. x.. Leet peeveepee'ers will tell you youre' wasting their time asking about drones, and to go back to that 1.0 system you were raised in. Oh, and will insist on everything T2,cuz if you don't deal absolutely MAXIMUM DAMAGE on every single shot you're doing it wrong, are a complete loser, and should go back to WoW. x.. Casual missioners will say use whatever you can afford, pay attention to range, and do what you gotta do to get that final objective. And they don't give a crap about WoW.
I say use whatever you want, and whatever you can to get the job done. Most of my alts can use T2 sentries, and do. For those that don't, I really don't use sentries: they tend to use lights and mediums (T2). I occasionally will use Navy drones just for giggles, but I never use T1 combat drones.
