The trend these days appears to be for corporations looking for members to demand that everybody uses Teamspeak at all times. Now, I can understand the point of this if you're in the middle of a battle and don't have time to be typing commands out, but surely I can't be the only person who plays this game when there are other people in the room.....my missus watches TV while I play Eve, and if I were blabbering down a microphone all night long she'd go postal, saying I was interrupting whatever horrible reality TV muck she was watching at the time and threatening the removal of certain soft, round body parts that I hold very dear.
Is anyone else anti-Teamspeak or am I a non-voice in the wilderness?

It's all down to the corp, their corp their rules. That's all there really is to it.

You dont have to be on TS unless there is ops. I hate the damn thing personally, but in combat it can win fights

I don't like TS because it makes me extremly laggy, especialy in PVP. But, I have come to accept that most corps to ask for you to use TS on request, so I do. I think ventrillo causes me less lag, but since it isn't freeware like TS not many people use it. -----

So shes allowed to make all that reality-B&B-soap-kind-of-stuff-noise that will kill every for its own operating braincell that is around. I'd put the remote controls batteries backwards if i where you. |

As many have stated, it's not neccessary for everyone to speak on TS, as long as they listen on TS. In fact, when it's late on Friday or Saturday night, it's probably best if only the commander can speak... :)
One suggestion to lag caused by TS, as long as it's caused by your computer and not by your connection: if you can afford it, buy a cheap old laptop (200-400 MHz, 128-256M of memory should do, and don't cost much over 50 dollars nowadays), and install TS on that. No more shared resources on your game computer.
I have mine installed on an old Notepad (400MHz processor, 165-ish megas of memory) with a light installation of Linux to save resources. It's also handy for keeping open IRC and a browser while playing Eve or other games (I keep open a map of targets on it when playing online flight sims, for example).

There's an awful lot of people who seem to think that playing EVE requires you to do something which is not in any whatsoever a part of EVE. We've had this argument before, but nobody listened.
If you need out-of-game help to play the game, then you're doing it wrong.

Personaly I hate TS. I can't listen to my heavy metal while listening to the FC bark out orders. But TS is a very effective tool in pvp I just wish the FC's and scouts were the only ones allowed to talk. Not enough FC's mute people who need to be muted.

i think with regards to combat ops some form of verbal comms is essential, typing is just too damn slow.

Right..go try fight a battle without it..the team without TS loses (unless its a small gang with ppl that know eachoter well enough to work together blindly..but still..TS helps)

Teamspeak at all times is pointless. Random inane chatter is annoying. Useful for interviews with new corpmates, or as an option, but chat channels do just fine there.
But to be honest, there's not many corps (as far as I'm aware) that have 'always be on TS' type rules.
I'm wary of PvPing with people who don't/won't use TS. Simply because I know the difference it makes.
Otherwise, well, corp rules are fair enough. Either accept or defect I guess. -- Lyrus Associates is recruiting |

So http://www.eve-iss.com is evidence that you're doing it wrong?
Or are you going to start making some sort of vague limits as to what is "out-of-game help" and what is not?

I listen on TS with some headphones.
But to be honest, yeah, if my wife heard strange manly voices eminating from the computer (or more concerningly, small boy voices) and me taling back; she would start takeing me to Relate.

as a lot of others have stated, you have to have ts for pvp. It's close to impossible to organise a fleet by typing alone. I never found ts to be that much of a cause for lag, even when I was using dialup - is your pc's spec lacking in any way?

I don't mind listening in but I never speak on TS. Mainly because who I am in game isn't who I am in real life. I like to keep the two separate.
And my wife would think I was a nutter too.

Unfortunately it is true. What's worse is that it doesn't sound much better in the context it was used. Any crafting system with the potential to kill you has to be better than they system we have in Eve.
As for Mr Ikvar there... /me waggles his finger. ______________________________________________

Don't make that big problem out of it. Most corps which require TS also say that you should have "at least headphones" with mic being optional, so you can hear what the gang leader/ fleet commander has to say. Au contraire, usually you need to shut up anyways and just need to listen. So its not that big of a problem if you don't speak. You still get the orders and your gf can watch the cr... erm.. nice shows on TV.

If your corp demands that you use teamspeak then get a headset and configure the set so that you have to hold down a key for it to send.
There is no way your corpmates will be able to tell when you have the headset on or not if you are not actively invplved with their actions, nor will they be able to tell if you are a person that simply does not spam the teamspeak channel or if you simply dont get into the conversations.
The real beauty of it is that when you are on a corp op where teamspeak is in your opinion waranted then you can be active.
If the corp ever starts asking for you alot and you not hearing it (as the headset is not on your head) you can always say you were on the head, afk as your GF wanted healp with somthing so on and so forth.

It's very useful for combat ops.
Outside of that, it depends on what you do with it. I've had some hilariously entertaining convos on vent with corpmates, tbh, it's rather enjoyable at times. But that's very much YMMV.

I'm not fond of TeamSpeak either. It breaks the illusion for me. Plus, the audio quality drives me batty after a while. But I acknowlege that in battles, groups using TS are more likely win over groups not using TS. Too bad this functionality wasn't built into the game, but I'm sure it doesn't make economic sense to do so.

Exactly. Corp mates who you like talking to is what it's all about Knowing people by their voices makes corporations that much more tightly knit, and for combat it's essential for coordination.

If you need out-of-game help to play the game, then you're doing it wrong.
If you can PvP without TS and beat a corp that uses TS, they're either a) total, absolute noobs, or b) you're a PvP god.
Simply put, TS is a neccessity.

They were going to improve gang system in exodus, but it never got in. Current gang system we have in eve is one of worst I have seen in mmorpgs and probably reason why so many use TS is because its so hard to get anything organized without. EvEs gang system could really use some improvement.
