I'm posting this under "Ships and Modules" because I've been spurred into action by the nerfing of the Thorax drone bay (I actually thought it was a mistake; the description of the Thorax still says "hordes of combat drones" - ten light drones is hardly a horde). Here's the deal: I've been playing for over two years now (which is why I prefer responses from those with similar experience). I always play solo*. When RMR came out I was excited for the new drone skills and immediately bought some of them only to find out that my bay had been quartered! One of my strategies is to pack my bay full of light drones and use them as cannon fodder. So, without moving up to bigger ships (I happen to like cruisers), am I wasting my time with all the drone skills I've built up now that my bay is so small? Also, can some of you more experienced players tell me what kind of setups you have, what kind of money you make, and strategies you use now that you have built up years' worth of skill points?
*I'm really not anti-social and I know that my questions make it sound like I just bought my character off of E-Bay, however, I work as a bartender in real life and I don't always want unsolicited interaction with strangers. I also enjoy figuring out some things on my own. That being said, I have to admit that I occasionally talk to others and I like to help those who are in trouble, but I also miss out on the tips that one receives when you spend lots of time with others (like in a corporation).

By the way, for anybody who wants to criticize me for not wanting to socialize with others in a social universe, please understand that having other "real" people in the game gives it unique characteristics that cannot otherwise be mimicked and I don't ALWAYS want to avoid others.
Have a Merry Christmas, a good holiday, and a plentiful New Year!!!

You can fit medium guns in your rax now. It's not the monster it used to be, but definitely still good. I recommend using 5 medium drones. Also, using drones as cannon fodder is not a good idea in my opinion.

If you like drones, go with an Ishtar. Still a cruiser, since you like cruisers, and totally awesome drone boat. If you don't have the skills or the cash, go with a Vexor instead. That will at least give you some more drone-bay to play around with your new drones.
Yes, training the new drone skills is totally worth it.
As for the thorax...if you have your gallente cruiser skill maxed, drone skills maxed, medium blaster spec skill high, great navigation skills and great armor skills...it's still a terrific cruiser. Still the best in my own humble gallente-specialized opinion. It's tough, it's fast, and it's hard hitting at point-blank range. The big thing now, is that you pretty much need to be thorax-focused in your training to be good in one; not just train gallente cruiser to 4, drone interfacing to 3, slap a 1600 plate and small guns on one and have a totaly pwntastic ship.
The mk II thorax seperates the "men from the boys" as it were in gallente cruiser skill.

simple answers to use a vexor now instead of a thorax. the thorax was never meant to be a drone ship, it was ananomaly.

I couldnt agree more.
The only reason the thorax was claimed to be over powered was because you could get into one after two months in game and do pretty well in combat.
Now however, it's on a par with the vast majority of other cruisers. In order to become a competent pilot, you have to put the time in.
As a speciallist gallente pilot, I'm pleased about that. It means that those of us who have put the time in have a more significant advantage over those who have simply hopped into a rax after 6 weeks.
The Deimos is the ship the rax should have been. Powerful, yes, but only after a significant amount of training. I myself am well on the way to having the highest damaging deimos possible without implants.
(maxed incedentals bar surgical strike, HAC 5, blaster spec 4)
Balieve me, that's taken me the best part of a year to train, including all the support skills. I dont want someone who's been playing for 2months to be able to knock me for six really. |

I want to see you launch '10 light drones' from the Thorax. Also, your drone bay had been halved.. Then all drone bays were havled as RMR and max drones changed to 5 so you really can't complain that you've been nerfed into pre-existence. The Thorax just relies on it's guns and not it's drones now compared to pre-RMR when it was the other way around.
Also, I don't have billions of SP but to make good money hunting NPCs in 0.0 works pretty well. If you want to stick to cruisers and not use a BS then maybe it's worth investing in a HAC

Yes, my drone skills allow me to control ten drones at once. It's not that tough as long as you group them.

Edited by: illusus on 22/12/2005 20:03:36 Oh, and my bay was 200 and now it is 50... that's a quarter. Okay, so have I missed something? I have already been using medium guns on my Thorax (usually one or two depending upon the rest of my load-out).

Thorax drone bay was halved to 100m3 to be in line with other cruisers. Then ALL drone bays were halved as part of the drone overhaul. Thorax was given a powergrid boost to allow it to fit its intended medium guns to compensate for the significant drone bay reduction.
So while u say it was quartered, in effect it was only halved, and you gain significant damage output from the guns.
As someone said before, the vexor is a good alternative if u want more drones, or failing that the ishtar if you want to go the HAC route. If you happy using med blasters on your rax also consider the deimos.
Just play around with it and im sure you'll find a good solution

Thing is everyone is now limited to 5 drones only.
Drone interfacing skill has changed it's bonuses, oh and don't go buying advanced drone interfacing thinking that will help, it's for Capital ship Drone control units.

Thorax, like others said before, was brought to par with the other cruisers. It was way too powerfull before. It only took a week to get into one, then another month of training or less to totally make every other ship next too it obsolete. Put your 2 years of SP into something like a HAC or a t2 BC.

The thorax is a great ship. I still onyl control 4 drones(highest being medium)so the whole drone nerf never really bothered me, except for the fact i couldnt carry 20! :p
I've always used medium rails on the rax, and they do a hell of a job. I dont get why you said "one or two" I used to fit 3 x 250mm protos, but i got ganked, and started using stuff from corp hangar playing around with settings. Now ive been using either dual 150s, or 200s, and been able to fit 5 on, giving a great amount of damage, and a good range too.

Drones as cannon fodder? hmm.
Definitely worth getting the new skills, and as has been said, the Thorax was an anomoly... I like still like it, but I like the fact that the Vexor is now a capable ship instead of the Thorax's little brother. ----------------------------------------------- My Ideas: Drones wish list <-- 2 years old.
