Are Target Painters really worth the effort on Cruise Missile ships in pve situations? I'm thinking with the range disparity between the two (45km-ish optimal for TP and 100+ km for cruises) they seem rather useless.
In a good portion of lvl 4s, your basically sniping past the TP's optimal anyway, and coupled with the longish cycle time, they seem more a headache then a benefit. I can understand their uses on torp ships, as the range disparity isn't really an issue. |

Many NPCs are often not further away than 20km-60km. Unless you plan on using an MJD is a TP a good way to get more DPS applied. Loss is meaningful. Therefore is the loss of meaning likewise meaningful. It is the source of all trolling. |

Also, have in mind that TPs carry a short optimal but they also have a very long falloff range. For example, a meta4 TP has 37.5% signature radius increase power, and a range of 45km+90km.
That means your TP is 75% effective at a range of 90km ie it has a 28.12% signature radius increase power. Its not something to scoff at really, especially when you factor in the missile damage application formula. |

My cruise got 220km range. TP is useless to me since I stay at 100-200km range from npc.
I was doing a mission yesterday against sansha. There were 5 groups of npc. I warped away so that closest group was 100-110km, farthest group was 180-190km. Killed them all. Only had to activate shield booster once. Life is short and dinner time is chancy Eat dessert first! |

What you say is correct, just ever so misleading. TPs aren't 75% effective in falloff but rather fully effective 75% of the time. I know that's what you said, just clarifying the phrasing. |

Yes. What I mean is that in 90km there is one in 4 chance that the TP will not work. In 135km, there is a 50% chance that the TP will not work etc..

If you are using a hull boosted range cruise ship and staying 150+ km away from the action then you do not really need TPs.

Target Painters on a Cruise boat are mostly usefull when you use Tech 2 missiles, specifically Precision ones, against Elite Frigates and Cruisers .... cuts the number of volleys needed to blap those types of NPCs in half.
Of course, as several people already said, it depends on your prefered method of engagement ... if you MJD 100 kms away, you really don't need TPs ... if like me you prefer to stay close to the warp gates of the missions with an engagement range of 30 to 60 kms, a single Target Painter is usefull.
But against Battlecruisers and Battleships with Fury cruise missiles, I won't Paint those target.
Also, irking the NPCs with a Painter can help in keeping Light and Medium drones alive My skills : Kery Nysell, Jestra Nysell, Kotoko Nysell, Kotone Nysell |

Yes, like all EWAR. Not everyone knows how it works so I threw it in for good measure. |

It's useful and in fact very good. Having multiple TP's allows using only rage cruises during the mission, not wasting time on the long reload. You can also drop paints on elite frigates while killing battleships without paint (or with just one), allowing your drones faster kills on them. Target painters are no reason to skimp on rigor rigs, though. |
