I remember posting this pre-forum update, and was kindly asked for the information again. I thought I would post this for everyone to enjoy.
http://youtu.be/h8iw7y7ev5M
Back Story:
I've lived in Florida my entire life (24 years), and have seen all the launches from my house/schoo/work etc. I've always had a passion for all things space, and consider myself an expert on many things regarding it.
The inspiration behind this video came from the closing of the STS Program. How fitting, that the soundtrack used here is from the latest Transformers movie.
Various clips and footage from the very first race to the moon speech by JFK, to the final mission from Atlantis. Revisit a piece of my life I hate to see closed by a dwindling economy.

Despite the marvelous accomplishments I am still sad it ended so soon. I know we say we're building a new program, but I'm concerned our short sighted politicians will can it.

NP! The new program isn't really much of a program any more. At first the idea was very good, but now it has dwindled to a privatized program. I just believe that it will cause a lot more problems than what it's worth.

My parents live in FLA. They used to go down to watch the shuttle launches all the time and will likely really miss it. |

Part showing the challenger disaster is very sad. :(
I was in school when that happened and it's always depressing to think back to it. |

Nice Video.
Yes it was a very iconic vehicle but its 1960 technology. Thank God they finally decided to retire it.
The Aviro Arrow was a jet that was way ahead of its time and it was cancelled and now the STS is way way way behind its time and people still want it in service still. Move on.
Enough said. |

To quote one of my very favorite scifi characters when faced with an uncertain and changing time:
"We're about to go through the crucible, but we'll come out the other side. We always arise from our own ashes. Everything returns later in its changed form."
Economy's and politicians can only stave off our basic instincts for so long. To discover, to invent, to surpass those before us. I have no doubt we will return to discovery and exploration of space with renewed vigor, and Great Electron willing, in my lifetime. |

Now imagine where US manned space flight would be if you had spent the resources you used maintaining those inefficient/crappy shuttles on viable long-term solutions like reusable rockets or actual space planes .. that is what you get for letting politicians and interest groups dictate where to spend money instead of the scientists who actually have spend it/make it work.

And it looks like private corporations and not governments will lead the way in space in the future. Hmmm someone should make a game with that theme. |

Lol... google adsense is the one who manages that. It's based on your cache. If you've been browsing EvE stuff, it will display eve related ads. |

Funny story, in constant dollars, each Saturn V launch cost about $1 Billion (program cost/launches), each STS launch cost about $500 Million. Had the Saturn V program been continued rather than switching to the STS the ISS (in its present form) could have been completed in roughly 4 launches instead of the however many shuttle launches.
(And there's a decent chance we could have seen a moon base) |
