Hey everyone,
I was looking into various ways that I could make money through non-combat means, and I thought about mining. As I don't like empire space much, more specifically, mining in Null Sec.
I was wondering what you all thought about it, and maybe what your experiences were. I also was curious, could you pull it off with a few people, like a start up corp size, in retrievers? Obviously it wouldn't be as profitable, but still just a thought.
Thanks for your input,

You won't be able to kill the null sec rats without some help, for one thing.
The other issue is getting your ships out there - barges are very slow and I doubt you could make it past low sec without significant escort.
If you're hell bent on null sec mining, the best way to do it would be through wormholes - either look for a HS -> null sec wandering hole, or scan down a WH chain and see if you can find a null sec entrance. You could end up stranded for a while once you get out there though, as the holes only last for a certain amount of time, and then you'd have to scan your way back into high sec.
The easier option would be a wormhole mining op in a shallow hole with a high sec, K-Space connection, easy to find and if you check the hole properly for activity you can be relatively safe (still need a small escort for the sleepers, though 1 BC should be fine for most). The ore in WH sites is comparable in value to a null sec site.
Simply trying to mine in null on your own isn't advisable, and given the time/effort/risk of loss involved, almost assuredly isn't profitable |

Sure.
Just contact a Null Alliance.
Join and/or rent space from them at extortion level prices.
Pray the odds swing your way and they don't blow you up immediately when you arrive with your stuff.
If not blown up, be ready to set that alarm clock for 3 AM every single night for CTA ops and stuff to 'help out' as cannon fodder.
Sound fun and profitable ?? |

Good point, just figured we could catch a system or two with no one in it for a little while, long enough to mine some rocks then get out |

Unfortunately, unless you are set to blue by the Corp/Alliance, you will be seen as a threat if you show up in a NulSec system with Neutral standing. And they will chase you down. So just popping in and out is inadvisable.
The only way to relative safety, is to join a Corp or Alliance, or negotiate that you can be set at Blue standing, with the people holding the system. And THEN you can be reasonably safe, as long as the systems you operate in aren't heavily contested.
Profitability depends a lot on the logistics, including:
--NulSec ore sells for a fortune. But it is worthless, if you can't sell it. So either, a Corp/Player needs to buy from you, or you'll need to ship it yourself. Basically, shipping it in a bulk that is high enough requires JumpFreighter logistics. Otherwise the risk/reward is prohibitive.
--NulSec Rats are not a joke. Unless you are prepared, the random spawns (especially the battleships) can tale you down in seconds. The remedy is to either a) Flee, b) Flee and return in a different ship to fight them, or c) make sure your mining barge can withstand the attack (Doable, but requires high skills, and about 150-200 mill in gear, on top of the cost of the ship
--You'll need to bring everything you need. Ammo, skillbooks, drones, gear, modules, etc...you can't rely on a NulSec market to provide these. So everything you'll need will be jumped across 10-15-20 lowsec and nullsec regions. That is risky and/or expensive. Normally both
Ultimately yes - You CAN achieve the numbers people talk about...20/30/40 million ISK/hour. Or even much more. But it requires a lot of planning. |

Goons are renting out space now- that could be an option for you. But others, such as Chribba, are content to stay in highsec. Just remember to buy a mining permit.

If you're confident you can make 3b + a month, then renting might be the way to go, but knowing what Goons think of renters, I wouldn't dignify their doormat with my shoe, let alone put isk into their wallets. |

I have done null sec mining and it is quite possible to make money. If you're planning on doing it you have to choose if you're going to join the alliance and be willing to fight, or if you're going to be a renter and mine away. I do know that the barges are beefy enough to fight off the belt rats in null sec, especially when you fly in a fleet.
If it's more profitable than high sec is a lot harder to determine, as that depends on how much you play, how careful you are, and how good your skills are. |

Anyone running a sane alliance gives you the choice, Pay or PvP. If your paying rent, CTA and other PvP participation is entirely optional, if not frowned upon. Rental market is getting competitive from what I hear, get your own system for 1.5b/month, and probably falling. If your not looking to form a corp, you'll just want to find a corp that is already out there and offers acceptable terms. Be sure to inquire how your minerals will be transported or paid for. |

Null sec mining is hugely profitable, assuming you are part of the group that owns the sov of an area, and it is a deep enclave where you can mine undisturbed.
That actually covers a LOT of null.
But if your target area does meet that criteria, no, null sec mining is not great. Most people viewed Orwell's writings as a warning. The harper regime and the goons treat them as a guidebook. |

The main thing to remember is that ore's in nullsec are not worth a whole lot more then highsec ores. At best you will make 2x the isk per m3 mining Mercoxit with most of the other nullsec/lowsec ores worth about 1.5x highsec ore values. If you can constantly mine 100% of the time and don't loose and ships, and have a cheap way to get the ore back to highsec, yes you can make a profit, however; actually achieving that would be near impossible. If your doing it because you want to have some fun out in nullsec, go for it, but if your doing it for profit you'r probably better mining in highsec. |

A miner with all skills makes 1.2B crude ore per month in NS easily.
But to be a team effort. With at least 1 military to help with the mice and neutral. Orca for bonus and probably rorqual for compression.
There's a lot to do alone in NS. I advise you to seek an industrial corporation that is recruiting miners to 0.0 |

I did it (null sec mined) for about a month in providence and here is my take on it.
1) No you don't make any more money than HS mining, no matter which ore you're mining due to the following.
down time while parked in station when a RED or other unwelcome guest arrives (fairly often) down time while dealing with very large BS size rats (fairly often) dealing with the ore, moving it, refining it, using it... everything is more expensive in Null.
You will make more ISK flat out doing anything in HS vs Low/Null sec due to the PVP wait times and cost of PVP. If you're bored with HS, go to Null and play an alt for a while until you realize it's not boring in HS compared to Null/Low. Unless of course you PVP. |
