I was told that you can pirate in tech 1 frigates within days of starting in EVE. Well I must be really unlucky then. I made my first character 3 weeks ago and i'm having to retire him as i'm completely broke and have a too low security status to make any ISK in high sec to get me started again.
I used Rifters exclusively and mostly attacked NPC'ers and Miners in 0.4 and lower. My kill/death ratio was pretty good, the problem is the money in belt piracy is too low to upkeep the maintenance of tech 1 frigates. I started my career with 400k ISK and for every step forward I went two steps back. Often I would have long dry spells of people not paying ransoms and nothing to loot but medium armor repairers and miner 1's.
So now i'm restarting and planning to have atleast 5 million skillpoints, fly an Interceptor or Assault Frigate aswell as a "Plan B" in the form of agents incase I reach that point again where I can't seem to make a dime.
My question to more experienced pirates is when do you think someone is ready for piracy? My first time around I obviously wasn't. Also is there any money to be made in belt piracy or should I get a ship that can tank gate guns first? Any tips on this subject are welcome.
Oh and happy christmas all

ok heres where you went wrong... plan ahead. your tactics need to be based on the "what if's" especially when your starting out fresh in eve. if you do not view your skills AND your tactics in with eachother your not going to make much progress at all. jumping in a ship going guns blazing killing a target may LOOK like what piracy is about but its not. its all about picking and choosing your battles.

Well. That's a tought question.
I think you are ready for piracy when you got:
1) a few ships (fully fitted and ready to go) in reserve 2) a good few million in the bank 3) and guts to attack everything in sight (this excludes stations, gates and sentries )
Number three is the most important. If you dare, you will win.

um if the hac pilot was stupid enough to go afk in a belt with nothing runing at all you'll be able to kill it with a rifter :)but thats not very likely to happen

There are an awsome number of noobs out there, you dont know what you've got until the fights over imo. Id fight a HAC in a rifter, but i woudnt fight the same guy twice if i lost :)

You very well might win. But if you don't take your chances you'll never know.

Guess I'll give you the answer you seek. there are 3 character slots.. one is free, one is for making money, and one is for pirating. Train your money maker to mine if nothing else. just basic mining of scordite or something will help. After that you can start training your pirate up again.
If you have 3 victories out of 5 encounters then you are doing good. The reason for this is that those time you win, you show the ability to do what you do. Those times you loose, you shall learn something new. Eventually you will learn what to attack, how to attack it, and when to retreat from the attack that it tries to bring to you. In the end, even if slowly, you can start making money as a pirate.
Just the other day, I dropped a bunch of stuff i had been looting onto the market, one jump from secure empire. within only a couple days i have turned out 25 mil. Today my reward for victory has been t2 guns with total value of 35million isk. I may not be rich but my pirate is my money maker. You may need big ships to take on the big ships at times. That will come in time. My life as a pirate as bought me a geddon, Megathron with all t2 and highend named, ishtar HAC, brutix, ishkur, a few interceptors, and a few brutixes.
Your ready for pirating at the time you think "I wanna blow up other peoples ships"

It's ironic that you bring that up with Alex. ______________________________

When are you ready for piracy?
When you have your first frontal lobotomy.
Do it right and you can make tens of millions of isk with no risk at all - as long as you don't give a **** that you may be driving a customer away from EVE and you are certainly ruining someone else's day - or maybe week.

I am somewhat puzzled by this assumption that it is a paying customer's duty to provide customer care.
Mind to expand?

A Corpmate and I got into a fight with the pilot who posted above you. Needless to say we did not come out on the winning side(lost a merlin and a punisher). Not only are we not driven away we weren't even the slightest bit upset. We were just happy to have gotten into some action.
I guess I don't know why anyone would play a space battle game...And not want any space battles.
Even if you are the rabbit; is Han Solo anyone without the Imperials chasing him?

When are you ready?
Well I've seen very inexperienced players do well in piracy, it just takes some balls and tactics/brains especially if you are solo pirating.
1) Fit your ship out for a particular type of fight. 2) Don't get into a fight you are not fitted for or an enemy that will clearly own you (ie..your rifter vs their intercepter). 3) During a fight, know when you're going to lose a fight before it's too late to get out (#1 mistake of newb pilots, but sometimes unavoidable especially in smaller ships). 4) Losing ships happens, get used to it...but don't make it a habit. 5) ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS drop your loot off after a kill and before killing someone else. This insures your keep the profits you worked so hard to earn.
These rules apply to any PvPer, piracy is just a different form of PvP where everyone is a target. _______________________________________________

Mmmm. Yes. It's a good idea to drop off your loot in a jetted can at a safespot while the criminal timer runs out or while you are off chasing other marks.

If I've set up shop in a particular system with the intent of staying there longer than a day, I generally just anchor a giant secure at a safespot to hold all the goodies for my haulage alt to pick up.

Not sure on this, but won't scan probes be able to track your container, therefore revealing your safespot's location? Besides, you'll need a container for every system you pirate in.

I'm almost sure you cannot scan for containers with probes.
They do show on the scanner (as everything else that may appear on your overview), but when you are using scanning probes you have a limited choice of 'scan for' items, and if I remember correctly you only have ships and cosmic signatures.
(never tried to scan for a container with probes so I may be wrong, but I'm almost sure you can't)

I've seen a character of six days old ransoming battlecruisers and cruisers in a frigate in low security space.
Your attitude, and willingness to learn how to pirate effectively is all that matters.
As log as you're willing to take the risk, you will reap the rewards.
If you need any help with getting started as a pirate, contact me in game, and i'll be happy to answer any queries you have
