Hello everyone. First off I want to start off by saying I think EVE online is an amazing game with limitless possibilities and over the past 3 or 4 years I've been playing off and on. Every time I come back I like to start fresh and make a new character and all, I get some idea of what it is I want to do in-game, then I quit after a month or two.
My question for you all is what made you stay, what path did you go, and how did you decide on that? I can never quite figure out what I want to do and I want to play this game so badly. I know there have been other numerous posts like this because I have read every single one I could find over the years. When I think of EVE online I imagine me standing 10 feet from an oasis in the desert scorched from the hot sun and theres some invisible barrier there keeping me from the cool water and I cannot figure out how to get to it.
If you have no idea what I just said I'm basically saying I'm tired of all the other MMO pieces of **** out there and I have great faith in EVE and want to play it. I just have no idea how to get myself into it and start having fun. It seems like all I do when I get on is queue a skill, sit in my hangar, and read chat.
What should I do guys? And don't forget I'm interested in hearing your stories. |

I stayed because I found some great friends with whom I've had some of the best multiplayer experiences in my life. Unlike many other video games, Eve also has a "long-term success" aspect, which can keep you going with it even if something else (real life, another game, etc) distracts you for a while.
I suggest looking around and trying to join corps or other social groups who do stuff. It's then inevitable that you will get drawn into the fun. If you need more advice on finding a corp (or any other basic topic), feel free to ask in the New Citizens' forum.

I suppose I had a similar issue and moved all my stuff to lowsec and decided I was now living there, been surviving chatting to everyone who comes through the system and start recognizing the locals. I do everything there in need to survive run whichever site is thrown at me and kill rats, try and chase a few pilots and get,chased.. Met some people I can trust enough to fleet up too and some definitely not. Its very nice out there I suggest you try it or come live near me :-) this is without a corp btw atm I'm not really the corp kinda guy and not everyone is. I disagree |

I was lucky enough to be "spotted" by a couple of guys who were looking to recruit. At that point I had just lost my first Caracal having been smart-bombed on a lowsec gate. Tthe guy apologised to me after I convo'd him and asked him what the hell just happened . He refunded my Caracal and explained my mistakes.
I didn't really look back after that.
The guys that took me in were good fun. They were carebears but on a good scale. We went into wormholes, we did some semi-profitable indy stuff. Generally I was having a ball. When that all ended I was cast adrift.
I decided I needed an income and immediately began running trade whilst mission running. The ISK was ok for a new player.
I used to run silly games in Sankassen when I was drunk, just messing about in local and having some fun.
I ended up somehow in 0.0 when Initiative were messing about with (I think) -A- over Catch. Had a lot of good fun down there and flew in some really big fights.
I suppose what I am trying to say is - the opportunities are there. I just plugged away, chatted to people and had some fun. You never know where a chat is going to lead - for 3 months I was extorting a mining corp and making them sell me minerals at 15% below market average. It was all a lot of fun.
The number one thing I would advise anyone in this game is to throw away your social norm and just talk to people. They will make your day and you will make theirs.
Tis a social game after all! Hope you find a good niche for yourself and enjoy it. Aaaaaaand relax. |

I can also recommend "Leeroy Jenkins" style PvE. Forcing a whole fleet to warp after you and save your ass in an incursion is really quite funny.

look for a corp and make some friends. Playing alone can get boring really fast and for gods sake, stop creating new chars every time! This is not a usual MMO where you can reach max level in weeks. In some cases it can take a month just to train one skill to lvl5. You always will lose your motivation to reach or do something if you start over every time. |

When I joined as a player in 2003, it was for the graphics, the open ended gameplay and the backstory.
I quickly realized that I got a lot of enjoyment out of EVE from using it as a social platform, and flying with other like minded people. When I eventually started a corporation of my own, I was like "meh, I'm not leadership material, but I'll give it a go for a few months."
That corporation lasted seven years before I came to CCP and had to shut it down.

Started in 2005 after everquest went to garbage, Earth and Beyond went belly up, and DAOC stopped being interesting. Quit a few times sporadically throughout the years due to boredom. That came from not joining up with a corp for many years. Finally after rejoining the 4th time, took the leap and jumped into eve university, joining the amarr mining camp. Had some good times pewing asteroids. Jumped on coms and had a good time with the original creators. Hehe we did a benefit drive for eve u, mass strip mining half the constellation and sending the ore to uni to help fund it. That was a 24 hour mining op.
Left them, wandered around trying to figure out where and what to do. Started looking for a nullsec corporation before I ran into a wormhole corporation's recruitment thread. I figured that would be cool "knew 0 about wormholes", apped up, and joined the corporation. Had some good times throwing my ships at the fights that would come.
We shutdown the hole, and looked for a new home (we're in a c4, and wanted a c2 for more traffic). Ran into a old friend of another corp and we split shared a c2 for months. At the time we were in another smaller hole but it wasnt enough to support the 200 people we had at that time.
At the time we got into talks with the alliance, joined soon after, and here we are.
It is odd because some of the players know each other very well. There is a great comrodary you don't see in other games.
I'm sure someday I'll leave and come back, its like everquest. You quit, come back, play, quit, comeback, etc etc.
You do keep coming back though. Stabbers are totally broken

I joined in 2005. Since then I've been a nullsec fleet nobody, worked my way up to FC, then senior FC, then top-level leadership. Then we got BoBstomped and the alliance disbanded so I went into FW, then mercenary work, and even some piracy. After a while I decided to switch to highsec industry, and that's turned out to be an entertaining challenge all by itself. Right now I'm enjoying exploration.
What keeps me in the game? The knowledge that there's still plenty of stuff I haven't done, and that all of the stuff I previously enjoyed will welcome me back any time I feel like returning to it.

'what to do in eve' flowchart: http://swiftandbitter.com/eve/wtd/
I subbed in 2005 with a friend. The first thing I did was train mining drones 5 and gallente cruiser, and mine in a vexor. That eventually got boring. Over the years I let the subscription lapse repeatedly; I would return for a month or two and try something else. I joined Goonfleet and and dropped my subscription again after http://zkillboard.com/detail/-8591289/
Eventually I resubbed in early 2012 and decided to try pvp. I tried FW, RvB, and BNI, all are excellent environments to learn pvp. (I hear AGONY is too.) I've been enjoying pvp so I have now been re-subbed for a year and a half straight: http://zkillboard.com/character/156376470/history/
Incidentally this meant I got to miss all the Incara fallout and instead came back to Inferno, Retribution, Odyssey :)

I started in 2007, I think. It shows my character as being over 5 years old, but in all reality I've played maybe 6 months. I would play a couple months and then quit. This is the third time I've resubbed, but it'll be the last time I cancel. I think I would cancel because I would log in, train skills, and run missions. Yeah, fun... Always thought I want to go to lowsec and PvP. But I never would. Never could get enough ISK to really get ahead. I'm not one to jump right in and find a bunch of people I don't know IRL to play with. Also don't want to turn into a corp-jumper. And with games, I tend to like to learn myself before I branch out to find people to play with. Well, with EVE that's the hard way to do it. I think that's why I would end up canceling. Never really did any of the tutorials either.
So, about a month ago I decided to give it a try again. Started running some missions to try to get some ISK. Meh. Bought a plex and sold it. Right there was the best thing I ever did and I highly recommend it to newer players. For the investment in a game you want to play for a long time, it's a pretty good starting place to sell a month of play time for half a bil. I was able to get the skills I needed and some ships and so on, and have a healthy bank account left over. Ran a few more missions and well, I'm sick of that. Started looking at EVE Uni's wiki pages (which are awesome) and it said to do all the career tutorials. Which, in retrospect I should have done a long time ago. So last night I did the exploration one. That was pretty fun. My plan is to do the rest of the tutorials, mess around a bit, and then move to low-sec and find some people to play with. Still debating about if I want to try a corp like EVE Uni on my way. My problem with structured things like that is that my play times are sporadic and sometimes I won't have time to do anything but train skills for a month, so I'm kind of waiting for later in the fall and winter when I think I will have the time to really do something like that. For now, I'll finish the tutorials and then fly around doing different things learning as much as I can.
A week or so ago I spent a couple nights learning the directional scanner and setting up the overview tabs. This made a big difference as well. It's little things like this that make a big difference in EVE when you are new. This is still my first month after resubbing and I already feel like I've learned much more than the previous two times I subbed. I tend to think that everything I mentioned is just straight-up noob and also the reason why a lot of people try this game and then find it boring and quit. There's just so many little things at the first that can make the experience so much better, even if you're flying solo.
I guess that was more of a confession than anything. Either way, I'm in it for the long haul now. |

Remember eve is a long term game. You wont get the instant gratifaction like other games. Eve takes time. But youll learn a lot and make great friends. Sometimes it even carries over to first world. My thought for you is to figure out what you want and expect and build from there. If you follow everyones comments or ideas youll be in the same place in 6 months. My i like pvp with ocasional pve to fund sploding ships. Hell 2weeks ago i suicided a a carrier fully fit. Just for lulz. All ships are lost once i buy them. Never fallinto the isk trap. Find a good corp and you will learn fast. But never ever let your que run dry even if your on a break. The gue must never stop. |

I've been here for the past 8 years. The only thing I'm really uphappy to see unchanged are things like the drone UI, solarsystem map/tactical UI, overview UI. You guys have shown off a lot of fun advances that could really save this game, I hope you don't just forget them and get distracted.
During the alliance tourney, I realized that all the new people see is a bunch of squares. Why isn't it asy to tell which are the battleships and which are the frigates? Shouldn't the larger ships have larger squares when you zoom out or something?
I really want to get back into eve but the view I see the most while playing *zoomed out* hasn't changed in 11 years.
Please make the game more accessible so I can get my friends into it! Also maybe different weapon and sound effects for being zoomed out? come on make being zoomed out exciting :/ http://dl.eve-files.com/media/1206/scimi.jpg |

My first experience with EVE was the Beta.
I don't remember anything but mining in my Bantham back then and even tho I usually enjoy the hunter/gatherer role in MMO's, the release of Star Wars Galaxies made me forget all about EVE.
I created my first account back in early '06, when a few people I was playing SWG with got me interested in EVE again.
For about a year or two, I played on and off. With no real direction, just goofing around doing the usual mining and LVL4 running in hi-sec. Then, late '07 I joined an industrial corp on a whim.
Soon after, that corp joined a 0.0 alliance in recently conquered Red Swarm Federation territory. The alliance was soon evicted, sending me on a 3 year 0.0 journey, starting with flying Blackbirds against an invading Red Alliance and ending with me dropping my glorious Phoenix left and right in one of the biggest dread fleets of the time.
I think my "butterfly" moment was when I followed the remnants of my alliance into Venal, the only one from my corp. Logging out at the staging POS, still a member of my initial indy corp, and then logging back in; corp removed from alliance and getting blown up by the POS. After a quick chat, I joined the corp of the alliance leader.
I think for most people, finding their "way" in EVE, is something that just happens to them. Once you get over the initial learning curve and come to terms with the sheer scale of the sandbox, there's always something new to try out... and once you've tried it all, there's always something new to master.
My advice for anyone who has a hard time finding their "path" in EVE, is, join a player corporation. Finding a good one can be tough and if you, like I was, aren't really keen on space-guilds, join something like EVE University.
If you have to put the game down again, do so, and come back later.
I would recommend not starting from scratch with your character each time tho. Having a character that can do a little bit of everything pays of when you are still looking for your spot in New Eden. EVE is a skill based game, not class based. The nature of EVE means you'll almost certainly end up with a character who is a bastard child skill-wise. Try lots of different things with your 'main' and then train up alts when you find your niche.

After two years of being pretty much only PvEing, I've slowly realized that there must be either more or it's not worth playing
As it's the only MMO i would actually call an MMO (the only one fullfilling my requirements regarding freedom of choice) I knew there was more to it, but i failed to see it until one day, with a secstatus of around -8, that i have to create something myself or give up trying.
So i created a storyline influencing/involving hundreds of people, the " resident outlaw of hek" storyline... and it worked. (at least 90%)
After doing this for months and then having a few months break, because the missing 10% didn't work out, I have finally figured out something new.
Wish me success! (you'll regret that)

Hello Wasp,
First off don't be ashamed to admit you leave regularly - the game isn't always the most compelling to stay.
As for myself, I've always loved space games. So after trying Eve early on in its life, I finally committed to a character once I had a PC capable of running the game nicely in 2005. Now, i've had many hiatus'es since, but i started out early on as a miner, slowly drifting into mission running and then from there was thrust into 0.0. I felt like I didn't have the skillpoints back then to make any money for myself, so i eventually headed back after experiencing small gang 0.0 pvp for the first time.
From there I went back into mining and industry, but began more focused training into combat oriented ships to secure more income.
Eventually I found myself in Shadowed Command, where I worked primarily as a line member for industry and pvp/pve, before Fatal Ascension was even founded - though it was a dream that was due to begin soon.
Helped FA down in providence where we battled for CVA's favour, before moving over towards Atlas space before they fail cascaded.
After that we went over to Goon space.
Between this and the fountain war, I went off to do my own thing; Wormholes in C6s, Incursions, so on. |
