Hello everyone, As a extremely new player to EVE (just started yesterday), I had a question about the Drone skill.
I was planning on doing some mining and thought it would be useful to have some mining drones to help speed up the process. When I went to buy one, it said I needed at least 1 lvl in Drone skill. No problem! I'll just go train that.
But then when I go through the list of skills that I can train, I can't find it anywhere. Am I missing something, or is there something else that I need to do first before I can train it? Such as do something for an NPC, or maybe train other prerequisites? Any light someone could shed on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

You need to buy most of the skillbooks first. The ones already in your skill list are a very small minority. |

There's GOBS of skills to train in Eve, but you've only got access to a few of them at the start. Step 1 is to buy the 'skill book' off the market. Step 2 is to meet the skill's prerequisites... And I don't think Drones has any, fortunately. Step 3 is to 'inject' the skill, thereby making it accessible to train. Step 4: queue it up.
Regarding mining drones: They don't do that much, compared to other skills. On the other hand, combat drones are great.

To reiterate what Solai told you: mining drones for a new miner aren't as helpful as they seem. If you leave systems below 0.9, you will find your mining ship periodically attacked by NPC pirates ("rats") in the asteroid belts. Training Drones and Scout Drone Operation, and keeping a couple of light scout drones instead of mining drones, will enable you to put two mining lasers on the turrets of your Venture and let the drones defend your ship.

Thanks for the tip, I'll try that out.
I was playing a little bit this morning before I had to come to work, and I went afk to let my ship fill up on ore while I got ready for work. Thought it was safe to do because it was a 0.8 or 0.9 system, but like you said, an NPC ship had come in and was in the middle of attacking me. He had managed to take my shields all the way down to about 10%, but fortunately I was able to make short work of him before he did any real damage. Another few minutes though and it could have been a much sadder tale!
So would I just be able to launch a couple of attack drones when I start mining, and they will stick around to defend me until I recall them, or will I have to tell them to attack a target once an NPC starts opening fire on me?

If you set them aggressive (by right clicking top-left of the drone window), they'll defend you. If you set them passive, you'll have to target and direct them.
p.s. Don't AFK mine. You're asking for a suicide gank. |

So much this. In fact, I wouldn't AFK anything in this game. If you need to be away from the controls for any amount of time, dock up first. If docking isn't an option (say.. you're deep in lowsec or nullsec and there are no stations around) then find a safe spot (actually term which you should look up and understand) and cloak up.
Since you are new, I would recommend just docking if you're going to be AFK.

Something that may break your brain as you're still new and have few skills, but you can change the settings on your skillsheet to display different skills. The default is to only show skills you have trained, but you can also show all skills (settings tab in skillsheet) |

Awesome, thanks for the replies everyone.
I've read of the dangers of going afk. I was hoping that since I was cruising around in a crappy civilian miner, just mining veldspar, that a player pirate wouldn't take the risk just to jack my meager supply of veldspar. I guess I was lucky this time, lol. I'll be more cautious in the future. |

honestly its only a venture and in less than a day that thing mines enough to replace it many times over and playing in high sec isn't likely to be attacked by players that much since they lose thier ship too.
Theres a program called evemon you can use to plan training for eve and its pretty essential :) I suggest training up to retriever asap if you plan to mine. Just over a week of training and it can hold 5 times the ore venture can and mine 3 times as fast with strip miners. It can also hold 5 drones when you get drone skill to 5 and with some tanking mods on your retriever you can survive and kill any npcs that attack in high sec. |

Don't get a Retriever. Get a Procurer. They are much cheaper and much more practical. Retrievers are gank magnets in high sec. https://zkillboard.com/ship/17478/losses/ Procurers, not so much. They have a smaller hold so you'll need to empty it out more often, but they get nearly the same yield as the Retriever. And you can carry the same amount of drones.
Much better ship for new players, IMO. . |

As a miner extermination specialist, I highly recommend you use care when setting drones to aggressive.
If a ganker like me comes along and shoots you, your drones will shoot back. This reduces the consequences for me significantly if I podkill you. I'll still lose my ship for illegally shooting yours, but I won't lose security status for attacking your pod, as that attack will be considered legal.
Many gankers don't care - they run at a -10 security status anyway, but there are an increasing number of gankers that stay at a higher sec status and only podkill people whose drones have aggressed us first.

Here's a little skill book tidbit for the OP and any other new players reading this.
When you are in the station, open up the 'Help' tab on the left side of your screen. Now open the Tutorials tab and click through all the ones other than basic that you can access in the station.
Just for reading through them you will be given six or eight handy books, including survey, contracting, cybernetics, salvaging and a few others I don't recall off hand. Use the ones you want and sell the rest for a little starter capital.

In addition to Mr Epeen's suggestion, make sure "Show Tutorials" is checked in the General options tab (ESC menu -> General -> Show Tutorials).

have a look at the settings tab when you have the market open
you can hide skill books, ships & equipment that you don't currently have the skills to use initially its a very small selection of stuff toggling between the two 'by skills' options will let you check items to see their skill pre-requisits, and the things you can currently make use of ... can stop you spending $ you don't need to by mistake.
you can also limit which areas of new eden show stuff for sale (within your current region) |
