Hi i'm new to null sec and my alliance has reserved all the R64 moons and the R32 and below are going down to corp and maybe member level with a 15% tax on what we mine.
As a noob with no knowledge of moon mining and very bad at maths with no idea if an R32 or below moon makes more isk the a POS costs to run in fuel or not so if with the tax there will be a profit or not.
Hell I don't ever understand what R64, R32 and R16 and all that stuff means or how they came to be called that lol.
Anyone whos knowledgeable about moon mining able to chime in? Been looking with google for weeks but my google-fu is weak and I find alot of info about moon mining but nothing aout if it more than covers fuel costs xD |

This article on TMC may serve as a decent introduction to moon materials. One of the points it claims is that the lowest rank of moon materials only yields enough profit to cover the cost of mining it out.
But regardless, in most areas of Industry in Eve, if you're not willing to maintain a spreadsheet and use it to do the math, then you stand a good chance of unknowingly falling into an 'opportunity cost' trap, costing you money or withering your profits. So as you pursue this, you'll want to snuggle up with gDocs and get familiar with each other. You'll be glad you did in the end, and you might even find, to your surprise, that it's kinda enjoyable. That was my experience.

You really, really need to do the maths before starting any industrial endeavour, especially one as complex to set up as moon mining. Don't forget the cost of getting the mats to market.
Whether or not you'll make a profit depends on exactly what material you're mining, the fuel costs (and don't fall into the 'made it myself so it's free' mistake), what tax is taken and what the costs are of selling the stuff. |

In a word; no. Moon goo worth less than about 15k per unit is not worth setting up a large POS only to extract. Small POS is more viable to extract moon goo of low value, but... opportunity cost... effort... |
