Hey guys.
I'm interested in starting to enjoy eve PvP. So far I didn't do much nor trained.
Could some of you pilots out there give a rough estimate on how many days it would take, with a brand new char, to make a pilot that can fly JUST ONE TYPE OF SHIP WITH ONE (maybe a few small alternatives) TYPE OF FIT.
Let me explain:
For example I wanna train a pilot to be a beast in a tech 2 destroyer and be a t2 frigate killer. I'll prolly fit it with guns(or missiles), some mwd, web, disruptor and the works.
Now if I am only interested in having skills to make just that ship and fit work, roughly how many days of training it would require me to reach an above average lvl in flying that ship? |

I'd learn to be an ace in a T1 ship first. Using your example, an interdictor(T2 destroyer) isn't exactly a direct upgrade in combat ability and learning with them is going to be a lot more expensive then with T1 hulls. Interdictors also aren't all equal in combat ability, so you might want to know in advance, if training for a specific one will even allow for you to do what you want. |

Above average is defined by average.
The average frigate/destroyer pilot has (off the top of my head) rank1-2 skills at lvl 5 and rest at lvl 4 and a full t2 fit. That takes approx. 3-4 months to train for ships with only 1 weapon system (no drones).
To specialize a frigate to competitive levels against veterans takes 6-12 months. This includes tank, navigation and gunnery support almost maxed out to be able to duke out with identical fits (the definition of competitive IMHO).
To have a shot against something you hard counter with fit, t2 resists etc.. 1-2 months is enough.
To be useful in gangs, a day or two is enough.
EWAR is competitive at its fleet role pretty fast, a week old Maulus is a good maulus.
Fastest specialization off the top of my head: gallente fast tackle with hull tank.

How many millions of SP's does this roughly take and do you think if I raise enough isk, like a few bil, are there any people actually selling such specialized characters? I mostly see randomly spec garbage on the forum trade.. I'm asking cuz I'd rather invest time in making some dough in game and buying one than actually waiting 1 year to make a proper fit.. |

I had a character a while back (but not any more) that only flew frigs & destroyers. He could fly all racial types & most T2 types. After 2 years, he was still training. It takes a lot more time than you think! |

You'd get better value out of wasting a couple of hundred mil worth of imperfectly fit frigates in the first couple of months of training than you would out of spending it on the character bazaar. And that's about the only thing that'll make you an ace too. |

Still, has anyone seen such chars for sale? ty for the feedback tho.
Thing is i did play a lot of eve 4 years ago but I gave my char to a friend a long time ago. So it's not learning the ropes as much as having above average skills on 1-2 ships. |

It's about cruisers rather than frigates, but for a look at what you get for your time and SP, read this.
And as others have mentioned, you're better of spending your ISK learning to fight in T1 frigates than splurge out on a T2 ship character that will only ever make your losses more expensive than they need to be.
Obunagawe wrote:Absolute bullshit perpetuated by decadent vets who want to keep the flow of killmails coming. Maybe, but not in the way you're thinking. That is indeed the best way of learning to PvP combat in the game, and once you learn that, you'll come back for more. It's not the frigate killmails those vets are after GÇö it's the carrier and dread and titan killmails that the same character will generate down the line they want. In 2 days I'll be 4 months old. 4 months gave me 5.7mill SP. This is my EVEboard page here. Since you are interested in PvP, here's a killboard link as well.
Once Small Hybrid Turret IV is done, I'll swap to Light Missiles V and then do the core skills to V. In another 2 months, and probably at roughly 8 mill SP that should be done.
That said, I have already trained Frigates, Cruisers and Spaceship Command to V.
So to answer your questions, it'll take 4-6 months to make a character competitive in a Frigate / Destroyer / Cruiser, assuming you want all key skills at V. To just fit and fly it, it'll take like 1-3 days.
How much it would actually cost in ISK to get the skillbooks and so, I have no idea. I did all the Caldari tutorials, which gave me more than enough to get a few Condors. I think I got 200mill isk from a mate. With this I bought some implants, 20 fitted Condors, 10 fitted Caracals and all my skillbooks (and some of it went to RF Freight to get it all moved out of Jita to our Red HQ system. :D )
If you are looking to get in to PvP I would also recommend you check out RvB. Great bunch of people there. :) |

RvB is a lot different to actual PVP in EVE. If you want to hunt in LoSec / do FW, you're going to need proper intensive skill training before you become effective. I think OP is also thinking of solo PVP. |

You're right that RvB is different from low sec PvP. There are some rules in RvB. It's maybe less cruel then 'real' PvP, but it is a great way to get in to it though. The OP seems to be a fairly new player, or new to PvP at least.
He can chill in RvB during the 4-6 months it takes to get competitive with his ship of choice, and then go do his real PvP. It'll be a good initiation. |

So much thinking and planning in this thread. Go shoot some stuff. Lose ships, have fun. I have never bought a character- makes me feel like putting cheat codes in a game. Hell, I dont even skillplan much at all and I miss days of training sometimes. It's a game not a job. I can just about guarantee you will never surpass Chribba's 200m plus skillpoints. But who cares, he used them to mine veldspar. See Bio for isk doubling rules. -áIf you didn't read bio, chances are you helped fund those who did. |

It's 6 months of training, you could always just do it yourself. There's plenty of PvP characters for sale, although generally people don't sell 1 ship / 1 fit characters. The problem being that you're aiming for a very small target market with that. It's better to train it in a few things, if your only goal is to sell it. |

If the price is right, then sure. But I have to say this. I am just a spare character being trained for fun. I've never undocked. You'd need another month or so before being actually usable in player combat.

One often over looked aspect with PvP is your real life skills. There 2 major skills that matter here. Your ability to fit and fly the ship well against the right targets. The second is perhaps the most overlooked. Budget. I fly ships that are cheap enough that i can afford to lose a lot before i need to care. I have decent PI income to support my current ship lose rate when i get round to doing it.
Also i have fun with cheap ships. I still love flying a t1 rifter for a few million. Currently i am getting podded too often for implants and use the pod death express to get around eden sometimes.
Flying in fleets is also awesome fun. There are a few places that do "public" fleets. Like bombers bar (have the odd frig fleet, even a rookie ship run tonight).
But yea, to even get an idea of what you would be able to kill with a given ship and fit is something that is hard to learn without just flying em and see what works. |
