Hi,
I'm trying to finish a l2 security mission but getting shred to pieces. I got a Thorax and tried both medium rail guns and small guns; but I keep on missing most enemies. A swarm of them attacks me and I just can't do much. I got motion prediction, small and medium turret skills upto level 4. Most shield/armor skills are also around lvl3 or 4.
I'm very new and was wondering if l2 security missions are even doable in a Thorax.

They are... just keep in mind...
- railguns are terrible at close range (see: they can't track targets up close). You ideally want to be shooting at stuff at the edge of your optimal range. - use light drones against smaller ships. They are designed to be your "point defense." - never mix your guns... or ammo. The idea is that you want to be dealing 100% damage at a single range and simply work on maintaining that range rather than deal 50% damage or less and multiple ranges. - you can maintain range best by using an Afterburner.
- push comes to shove... downgrade to a Catalyst (destroyer) and use 125 railguns with Lead ammo at range. They should be able to chew through all but the toughest of level 2 missions. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

Thank you so much. I will give it a try this weekend. I truly appreciate it. I was stuck with this thing for more than 5 days. |

That is a nice fit. Just be patient and you will "get" it soon enough. Don't be afraid to warp out if it gets hairy. And skip the mission "Blockade" until you get your legs under you. "Measure Twice, Cut Once." |

One other thing you want to do (as I want other newbies reading this) is to look and study what each module does (hint: look at the bonuses they give).
Specializing and focusing fits in EVE will help you immensely in attaining the goals you wish to achieve in EVE. To find out what you should specialize and focus in go out and do something regardless of how many or how well your skills are trained. Learn what it is you are lacking and train/learn the necessary skills/tactics accordingly.
In this case, you describe not having enough tank and the ability to kill things at close range in missions. Thus you should...
- train up your tanking skills (to take more damage over a longer period of time). - train up your gunnery skills so your weapons track targets better. - train up drone skills to take out things that get too close. - learn out to stay at range. With long-range weapons there is generally a "sweet spot" where your weapons will be highly effective and you will take minimal damage (which I pointed out before as being somewhere around the edge of your optimal range).
EVE is a "process" game at its core. Learn from what you do and experience. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

Also the mission RECON only requires you to fly to the warp gates, you do not need to fight in them. (there seems to be a rash fo players getting crewed up that mission chain recently) I mine in EVE because I'm too drunk to fish in WoW.-á |

thank you so much . That outfit for Thorax did wonders. It was the "Blockade" mission (my first L2 mission) that got me into this trouble. (Blockade should NOT be the first L2 security mission for a new player...the difficulty jump is insane!)
Another question: Someone in chat said that the best way to earn money in a L2 security mission is to salvage (i'm training Salvaging now). Do people usually kill the rats with one ship and before turning in the mission take another ship fitted for salvaging to salvage? Or do they usually fit the salvaging equipment in the same ship they use to run L2 security missions? |

Like I said above... as your skills improve, focus more on dealing damage and less on maintaining capacitor power.
Also... how I dealt with the Blockade Missions when I was a nubbin was to move around, killing the frigates first and then grinding down the "big guns."

People do use one ship to kill everything and another ship to collect the loot and salvage (usually a destroyer fitted with 4 tractor beams and 4 salvagers).
However, I wouldn't recommend salvaging missions until you gain access to level 3 ones. Generally speaking, NPC frigate and destroyer salvage doesn't yield anything particularly valuable. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |
