It's just an underhanded way of getting free "volunteers" to replace the paid employees you just jetcanned - much like local supermarkets now have fewer clerks and more "U-scan" stations for "speed" and "convenience", or local TV news encourages people to upload their videos for broadcast on TV.
Throw around enough buzzwords like "social engagement" and "community team" and it might make some players feel special, but those who see through the buzzwords will be alienated.
While your announcements for the Winter expansion have done much to bandage the foot you blew off with the NeX gun, this announcement combined with the potential screwing your Japanese player base is likely to take, are another round chambered and aimed at your other foot.
With the recent 20% cuts still oozing blood, this was just not the right time to announce this program, you really should have backed off on this until AFTER the next expansion.
I don't even PLAY the game for six hours most weeks anymore, why would you think I'd want to WORK for NOTHING for six hours a week for CCP, given the occurrences of last week?
Certainly there must be people within CCP who are angry at this announcement as well.
I agree here - the time to do this is not well thought of - as many people said here - people were/getting fired and you are now getting volunteers in to do their jobs... ouch - I would be pissed if it happend to me.
Don't get me wrong but what happened to all the good idea's, trends and other stuff we as community been putting on the forum ?
Goodluck on all teh people that apply or applied - lets see how long it takes before the shine comes off. >>> Mine is Bigger than Yours ! <<< |

I can understand how some people can feel that this is a method to get the same amount of work done for a cheaper operating cost.
However, I would rather them proceed with this venture rather than have to reduce their community team while also not replacing them in some capacity. I for one encourage this, it improves player involvement and gets more people back onto the communications between players and development. |

This could've been a good thing, but if it's going to be superwised by the current moderation team it can only end up in a mess. You guys need to fix what's broken before you add new content. That goes for FiS.. as well as the staff that don't know how to do their job, or get the relevant tools/backup/non-bias from their superiors.

Just wanted to say 'good luck' to both CCP and the new Mods.
As someone who participated in a similar program years ago (the Second Life 'Resident Moderators' aka ResMods), I am almost assured that it will be rocky during the first months. I strongly suggest that CCP keep in close touch with the first Mods not just as a watchdog, but also as moral support. Trust me, they'll need it.
As for the question about 'specializing in one section,' that happened with us too. One liked to work on General Discussion (that forum's equiv to CAOD/OOPE) and I tended to look over Sales, Scripting, and Building sections.
[Quick Edit - Navigator, you guys need someone like Torley. Seriously. ] I may have come here from Myst Online, but that does not make me any less bloodthirsty than the average Eve player.
Just more subtle.

I am well qualified for the job, am fluent in 3 languages (2 of which were asked for), and I've run a medium sized forum (~2k members) for a couple of years as admin in the past. And even though I do enough underpaid work at my day job, I'd be willing to volunteer, if it wasn't for the fact that I'm much too disappointed and critical of CCP. I won't forfeit the ability to poke CCP whenever it is due. |

But normally they pay for the work.
And did ccp not just fire the people normally doing this?... It look like CCP never change. |

On the F&I forum yes cos there is a rule there saying don't posted repeated threads about topics already been discussed, instead add to the old topic
No-one ever obeys it but I am fairly sure I remember reading it when I first looked at that forum years ago (unless it is gone or changed since then) and wow am I shocked that I remember the wierdist things

Any reason you would have to? So long as you aren't just posting crap and are been reasonable I wouldn't think that would be a problem, its not like you can only post pro-ccp propaganda if you join! At least not that I've been told ;) Even if ISD rules don't explicitly forbid it, it would be hypocritical. Bash CCP on one account and get annoyed at moderation locking legitimate threads with "no content" as reason, then log in to ISD account and start doing exactly that.
I don't know the ISD rules, but I wouldn't be surprised if it contained some rules of that type. Like government employees not allowed to get politically active... |

While I do feel a bit bad about a situation where people who had a job are now being replaced by free volunteers (nobody can deny this) I also realize that having to employ people living in different time zones all around the globe just to monitor a forum 24/7 might not be the best kind of investment when you are in a financial tight spot.
Centralizing the Community Team in Iceland means getting a lot more benefit from these people from a company point of view, though it comes at the cost of being able to moderate the forums at all hours. The 'luxury days' are gone... for now. Mr. Science & Trade Institute, EVE Online Lorebook-á |

The idea that someone will use the CCL role to show favoritism to one alliance, corporation or individual will be addressed with the volunteers and a zero tolerance policy will be shown.

After playing this game for 4 years I must admit I was tempted.
However, after reading this thread, the idea of beeing an unpaid enforcer of company policies which apparently includes feeding blatant lies to their customers suddenly lost all appeal.
I'll leave that to people like Sreegs and Navigator. They seem to do it so well.

Just a few random questions here...
Why was the community team reduced by 50%? That does seem entirely counterproductive if you are trying to enhance the amount of communication (while I have never seen a lack of community here compared to other games, the idea still seems counter to what you are trying to do)
Also with these volunteers being part of the ISD, will they be able to help out with the ingame help channel? Or even the new help channel which is restricted to just new accounts? |

From memory, ex-CCP Fallout has tweeted to the effect that this volunteer moderator programme has been in progress for some time. The aim was to free up cycles for the community team to pursue productive work instead of baby-sitting the potty-mouths. I'd suggest that the volunteer moderators are even more necessary now.
This article referenced by ex-CCP Fallout may help you grok the situation better (note the date): http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/37995/Community_Managers_Not_Just_Forum_Moderators_Anymore.php
