I think SC should be compared to WoW, because WoW has a market, and you walk around in WoW. Also, WoW has a market too
Also, please learn to pronounce words correctly if you're going to insist on making videos about things some people might be interested in. I watched through both of those videos and the one yesterday, and had a really hard time not because of the content but just the fact that the commentary was so bland and boring.

Hi, I've moved this thread to a more appropriate forum location, considering that you're talking about games other then EVE.

I don't see why you need to go the lengths to make this comparison when Chris Roberts is not and won't be comparing Star Citizen to EVE, as you even mention in your own video.
To me it is a bit funny that the only people interested in this comparison are the people that feel very passionately about Star Citizen, it is not the other way around and that I find curious, peculiar even. And while I have raised concern, scorn even, about Mr. Roberts' method of funding this (going back on LTI promise once already) project and scepticism if he can actually deliver this insanely ambitious game.
Do I want the passionate backers of Star Citizen to have this game and experience the full glory of it? Hell yes!
Do I think there is cause for concern when people are pledging millions of dollars to what is essentially just promises? Yes, I do.
Do I think there is a justifiable reason, and is even necessary, to compare EVE to Star Citizen when they have little more in common than space and spaceships? No. But internet spaceships is serious business, I guess and therefore people will think of all kinds of ridiculous and inane reasons to make a comparison. Allow me to be frank. You will not like me. You will not like me now, and you will not like men++ a good deal less as we go on. |

An example of this is the new SimCity. If someone actually told the truth and warn everyone, I doubt as many people would been screwed over. IGN, PC Mag, and a few other major companies gave the game a super high approval rate. (BTW most of these companies have changed their ratings, but some of the ratings were on the SimCity commercials. Look on YouTube for them)
So it's important for average people to make videos like I did whenever they can. The videos might suck, the audio might suck, and what the person says may suck. But, as a viewer you won't be screwed over. Hell is around every turn. It's your choice to go in it or not. I don't get this.
the more people say to be careful of promises about "ZOMG TEH GAME TO END ALL GAMES", the more people bite it.
at this point and because of all these threads about SC I am pretty much hoping for the damn game to tank harder than titanic.

I really can't stand when a game developer(?) appends their name to a product..."Sid Miers, Civillization" "Chris Roberts, star citizen"
Seems overtly narcissistic and obnoxious, I imagine these are the kind of people who refer to them selves in the 3rd person.

I agree, but I also think this game would never got the funding if that didn't happen.
But, I hate the "God complex" CR is setting out. You can see in interviews with CR and any PR with CR or his games he is set out to be higher than everyone. You never hear about his mistakes, and you never hear about how he learned from his past. In fact it's even gone as far as his fanboys have called him a God. (You can see this in a few YouTube videos, forum post, and some articles)
As for myself, I've never heard of CR before Star Citizen. I've checked out some of his past games, and I think they suck (but that's comparing it to what we have today). To top it off, I honestly don't like CR. His voice is annoying, and for the most part he only tells half truths (give a maybe to a yes or no question. This way, everyone is happy). If it wasn't for a few of his employees giving a yes or no and not a maybe. I wouldn't backed the game. Hell is around every turn. It's your choice to go in it or not. Id read a mini biography a few months ago somewhere cant remember where exactly maybe PC Gamer.
Anyway, they revealed the reason its named for him wasnt an ego choice but a marketing one made by MICROPROSE to capitalise on his name during the early 90s.
Sid apparently didnt like it as he found it braggy. "I think you should buy a new Mayan calendar. Mine has muscle cars on it." --áKenneth O'Hara

Absolutely. ... sad that it didn't work out quite as well for David Braben, who together with Ian Bell, invented the hole genre in the first place.

To be fair: In the 90's there were a handful of companies pushing gaming to new heights. ORIGIN, the company Chris Roberts worked for, did Ultima and Wing Commander. Ultima spawned many sequels including Ultima online (UO). UO, while not the first MMO, is a landmark in MMO gaming. That game defined what the MMO genre would look like for many years. UO also inspired a bunch of Icelanders into creating EVE-online.
Wing Commander, Chris Roberts' brainchild, was mostly notable for being very polished and engaging. The game did nothing that hadn't been done before, but it tied all the components into a neat package. The most notable part was the very immersive story telling. After Wing Commander 2 the game featured filmed scenes with real actors ... and the numbers of CDs in the package was growing with each new title.
But yeah, there is no guarantee that Chris Roberts can deliver on his promises any better then other famous game designers/developpers. Plenty of people who did amazing things in the 90's: Peter Molyneux, John Carmack, Will Wright ...

Hey Craig,
if you're still reading ... I just wanted to leave the definition of instance here: short version and long version.
It is correct that the solar systems do not form one continous geometrical space. You can't get to another solar system without using a gate or a similar mechanic (cyno, wormhole). All that doesn't make it an instance per the above definition.
I'm not having a beef with you here. I just want you to be better informed when you do your videos ;).
... and explaining instances has been a pet peeve of mine for a couple of years now. Also, can someone explain what this thread is about?-á (Relax ! I'm just quoting Holgrak Blacksmith here.)

Well... the disaster with Elite 3 and the fact that Elite 4 has been vaporware for 15 years haven't helped David Braben.
Also Braben is a one-trick developer. He did Elite... and that's it.
OTOH, at least he's not Derek Smart. The Greater Fool Bar is now open for business, 24/7. Come and have drinks and fun somewhere between RL and New Eden! |

No they did not. Elite was hugely successful but the genre was pretty solidly laid out and has changed very little since Star Trader, later the Trade Wars series and more than a few things from the Traveller pnp RPG. |

Woah 1974 ... didn't know about that one . Thanks for pointing it out.
I believe Elite still holds the "did it in 3D with procedurally generated universe" trophy.

Sounds about right. There was another game that came out around that time but I'm not sure which came out first, I think it was Elite. I suppose it doesn't really matter though since Elite was the better game. |
