I just started this game and am training as a miner. I have bought a Procurer (the others were too expensive) and have a minimal fit for it. What drones and drone skills do I need to mine 0.5 or 0.6? I have not been past mining in 0.8 with a Venture yet. |

In 0.5 and 0.6 systems, your biggest concerns will be suicide gankers and belt rats. With Hobgoblin Is, the belt rats will easily be dispatched - suicide gankers, not so much, but if you tank your Procurer you'll be able to survive most solo attempts.
Therefore, I'd recommend getting Drones 5, Scout Drone Operation 5, Gallente Drone Specialization 5, and Drone Interfacing to 3 or so. That should be more than enough to take care of any belt rats and put a hurting on suicide gankers that think you're a juicy target. |

Do I need to do all 5x Hobgoblin 1's or is there room for a mining drone or two?
It would seem to me that a suicide ganker is not going to be discouraged by a few drones, so they would only be to take care of the rats. For a suicide ganker the only option is to tank up and hope he gets Concorded before he kills me. |

Fit a Damage Control, a Medium Shield Extander, and an Adaptive Invulnerability Field. The rest of the fit is up to you. You can mine with such a fit in 0.5 security systems without much fear as it will take too many gankers to kill you to be profitable or easy. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

Compared to your strip miner, mining drones will make minimal difference to your yield... so just stick with 5 Hob I's
The only option for the suicide ganker is to hope your tank holds until CONCORD arrives. Your drones won't even have engaged before its too late.
The other option is to mine next to a Retriever... Gankers will hit the soft target first.

[Procurer, T1 Gank deterrence]
Strip Miner I
Medium Shield Extender I Adaptive Invulnerability Field I Kinetic Deflection Field I Thermic Dissipation Field I
Damage Control I Mining Laser Upgrade I << not needed but it does increase amount mined per cycle by a small percentage.
Should give a fairly substantial amount of hitpoints against suicide gankers, they tend to use Catalysts which deal Kinetic and Thermal damage. The shield modules are active mods so you'll need to turn them on for them to be effective, there are passive ones but they aren't as effective as the active ones.

for T1 barges I personally like to have 2 hobgoblin II's, 2 mining drone I or II's, and one salvager drone.
Yes, the mining drone yield is not great, but accumulated over the course of 4-6 hours while I am reading web pages or watching a movie, it does add up. And 2 T2 attack drones are pretty much all you need to deal with any high sec spawn if your drone support skills are all IV's or V's (which should be a priority if you are solo mining). The salvager drone is there just because I hate clutter in my belts and have an obsessive compulsive need to never let scraps go to waste. You could probably swap it for another miner if you wanted, but I get that odd 1/2 million ISK load of salvage enough to make it worthwhile in my mind.

My thoughts on a starting fit for a Procurer. Obviously you can use nicer parts as your skills increase (and you wallet) but this will all fit on a Procurer without needing to worry about CPU or Powergrid needs. Your resister (before skills) are 55%+ across the board for shields with an EHP of 28,725, again before skills.
You will need to turn off the shield booster when you don't need it (although skills might put you in to cap stable). If you don't want to worry about the cap and your skills are really low change out the Small Shield Booster I for a Civilian Shield Booster I and you can run it all day.
Use the Survey Scanner to find the bigger rocks and/or calculate your time needed on each asteroid to mine more efficiently.
Note, to fit the rigs I have listed you will need to train Mechanic to 3, Jury Rigging to 3, and Shield Rigging to 1. Which will take around 13 hours of training time (worth it). The rigs around about 200,000 isk each, or 600,000 isk for all three but they will plug the 'resist hole' in your shields.
[Procurer, starter fit] Mining Laser Upgrade I Mining Laser Upgrade I
Adaptive Invulnerability Field I Survey Scanner I Small Shield Booster I Medium Shield Extender I
Strip Miner I
Medium Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I Medium Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I Medium Anti-Thermal Screen Reinforcer I
Hobgoblin I x5
Alternatively you can do the follow (you lose a little yield, but your EHP goes from 28,725 to 36,330 because the extra defense from the Damage Control unit (remember to turn it on)
[Procurer, starter fit] Damage Control I Mining Laser Upgrade I
Adaptive Invulnerability Field I Survey Scanner I Civilian Shield Booster I Medium Shield Extender I
Strip Miner I
Medium Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I Medium Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I Medium Anti-Thermal Screen Reinforcer I
Hobgoblin I x5 I mine in EVE because I'm too drunk to fish in WoW.-á |

What exactly is this idea behind the Shield Booster?
That thing will repair less than 0.1% of your shields per second - given that a gank has to kill you in less than 18 seconds to avoid CONCORD, a Small Shield Booster will have time to repair less than 2% of your shields - and a Civilian Shield booster even less. Nobody will ever notice it in battle and the gankers will just laught at it in the kill mail.
Slap on another invulnerability field or something like that if you want more defence.
Also, given that most gankers use Catalysts with antimatter ammunition, you don't really need to plug your EM-hole, thermal and kinetic is more important. One EM rig might be justifiable against the odd Thrasher ganker, but I'd use a kinetic one before putting in a second EM rig. |

As someone who actually does suicide gank other miners, a shield booster on a barge or exhumer is about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

What I am going for is the following:
F85 Peripheral Damage System I Mining Laser Upgrade II
Medium Azeotropic Ward Salubrity I Medium Azeotropic Ward Salubrity I Medium Azeotropic Ward Salubrity I Limited Adaptive Invunerability Field I
Strip Miner I
Medium Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I Medium Anti-Kinetic Screen Reinforcer I Medium Anti-Thermal Screen Reinforcer I
That will take a some training time and money to get into, so I am still not sure about the drones at this point. I will probably stick to a safer zone and fit 3 * Hobgoblin I and 2 * Mining Drone I for now. |

It's a Procurer people! *smack*
Stuff a Strip I and 1-2 MLU II on the Procurer, and go mine. It is a cheap (~12m hull) and insurable ship (though not AFK, and actually paying attention to what is going on in the system is better insurance).
Don't fit modules and rigs that are worth as much or more than the hull itself!
A flight of Hobgoblin I's will easily take care of any belt rats in hisec. |

That is I believe what I have been looking for with 53,870 EHP on a one month old Miner. (T2 version) Thank You Sir.
I do not understand the intricacies of shield tanking yet, having followed Amarr and Gallente paths but it seems that Eve will not let that sleeping dog lay. I am not my main, just a blunt instrument. |
