So last night I went mining in my procurer.
As an experiment, I specifically mined 4 different hisec ores to see which was the most valuable per full ship load. The results were:
dense veldspar - 1.7m isk massive scordite - 2.1m isk Viscous Pyroxeres - 2.1m isk Rich Plagioclase - 1.7m isk
Presuming on no changes to ore prices in this case, is there any reason why I should be mining anything other than the scordite and pyroxeres.
Currently my refining skills are not good enough to make refining worthwhile but once I can 100% refine, what else should I be looking at when it comes to deciding what to mine?
tl;dr what factors do you consider when choosing what to mine?

The key metric is isk value per cubic meter. This site calculates up to date values based on current market info: http://ore.cerlestes.de/index.html#site:ore
Scordite was the highsec ore of choice for several years in the game's early history. Various market forces reduced its prominence for a while, but now it seems to be taking its historical place again. |

all the above were for the 12000m3 ore hold in a procurer so I am best with whatever gets me the most money then?
one thing i didnt check- would they all take the same time to mine? |

All mining lasers work by m3, so as long as you're using the same configuration(1) on the different ores, Xm3 of ore will take the same amount of time to mine no matter what the ore
1) as in not T1 crystals on one, T2 on another |

If you wish to continue mining you should consider skilling up to 100% refine and obtaining 'zero take' at a NPC station of your choice that has refining facilities at 50%. Selling unrefined ore is for fools and is like flushing money down the toilet. To get 100% refine you will need a combination of high skills in Refining, Refinery Efficiency, and the ore reprocessing skills relevant to the ores you are mining. The ore reprocessing skills are also needed if you wish to use mining crystals to improve your yield. To get 'zero take' ,ie zero tax on refining at the NPC station, you will need to do missions for that NPC corporation to get 'effective' standings of 6.67 I believe. You don't have to be combat capable to do this as there are distribution & mining missions available depending on the NPC corp/station you choose.
Once upon a time Plagioclase used to be the ore to mine. Then it changed to Veldspar and since 'drone poo' drops were removed by CCP Scordite is the ore to mine. I'm talking about high sec - other places would obviously be different. |

I am currently saving all my ore
im on 88.7% refine at the moment so i still have some way to go before i start refining it but that is the plan. and having to move literally tons of ore from where it is now to where i have the best standings to cut tax

For large mining ops, where half a dozen Hulks are supported by an Orca and a hauler, the belt is just mined out. They suck up everything. Usually if they use T2 crystals, each Hulk is assigned one ore type, e.g. "you're on pyrox". When the belt is nearly empty, the Hulks gradually warp to the 2nd belt, and start sucking there.
When you mine solo, you just go for whatever balance of profit and effort you want. If you can sit still in a belt and suck on max-value rocks all day long, then yes you should do that. Often, though, you're quite limited by the 15km range of your strippers and the slow-ass STL of your barge or exhumer (especially if you haven't trained Navigation skill to 5), and so it's actually more efficient to be at least slightly less picky, but still ignore ore types that are total crap (just disable them on overview, then pretend they don't exist). |

Both mining lasers, strippers and mining drones, have a yield measured in volume per time unit, so the answer is yes.
Do note that you need to convert the ore to ISK. You can either sell directly to ore buyers, which requires that there be Buy Orders for the kinds of ore you have, and which cover the station you're selling in (Buy Orders that are good for you usually cover only a single station, while Buy Orders that are good for the buyer usually cover dozens of systems and potentially hundreds of stations).
Alternatively, you refine the ore to get the minerals, then you either sell the minerals directly (if there are good Buy Orders - I'm pretty sure there are Buy Orders everywhere, but no guarantee they'll always be good), or haul the minerals to a seller (Jita is good, it may be far away, but you can sell real fast) or use the minerals to buy something. But do note that refining requires its own skillz. If you miss out 7% or 9% to waste and 5% to the refining tax, you might have been better off selling the ore directly. |

How do you know that you are on 88.7% refine? |

looks like a good combination of lacking skills and standing |

When I right click on my ore in station and choose refine, a window pops up telling me my refining efficiency and also the tax rate at that location.
Or am I misreading that information? |

I forgot to mention if you are mining seriously you will really need access to a Freighter or failing that use a service like Red Frog etc. Using Red Frog will take maybe 5% of your gross revenue but they are honest and trustworthy providing you set the proper collateral figure.
By the way that is how you see what your efficiency at refining is. |
