I used to run a few sites before they changed it, and I remember getting quite a bit of money sometimes.
Nowadays though, most of the loot gets lost, and it seems that even when I do get something, it's practically worthless.
Does anybody know if hacking is still a viable way to make some ISK? I wouldn't mind going to lower security systems to do it if it means it's actually worth it there. |

First: Scan the spew container with a cargo scanner to see what's inside
Second: cherry pick the mini-containers depending on what you know is in there. No blueprints? ignore data containers. Decryptors? Parts containers. Salvage? Materials and Parts. Steve Ronuken for CSM 9!-á I'm starting early :) Handy tools and an SDE conversion Twitter: @fuzzysteve on Twitter |

I don't know how worth they used to be, but you can still make about ~50 mil isk/hour. It's pretty good income for an activite that des not require intensive sp investment |

Sorry, I didn't specify. Null sec exploration.
Tbh I never managed to find a site in highsec. Since the changes in probing everyone got into exploration and the high sec sites are very disputed. I had to learn my way in and out null and explore there: easier to find sites and empty systems all around. |

Do I have to worry about rats at all in data sites even in null sec or are they all gone? |

50mil/hr seems like an overstatement to me. Immediately after the change was made there was isk to be made, but now IMO the prices for the items that you can recover seem to have crashed. Myself and most of my colleagues have given up actually running the sites. The rewards just dont seem to be worth the hassle of having to deal with the unfun, repetitive, key mashing, minigame and spew. Now I do still scan the relic and hacking sites for pos bpcs - (im not sure if they only drop in relic or if you can find them also in hacking sites so i scan both) - If I find them then ill run the minigame and leave the rest of the cans untouched. Otherwise I just bookmark the site so we can jump on any neut that runs it.
Oh and they removed the rats from the hacking/relic sites everywhere except in wh. |

It might be, that's why I added the "~" at the front
That's the average I made in a session (2h) with crappy hacking and archeology (both at II), eventualy blowing up a relic for loosing the minigame twice and without much focus (frequente pauses to chat or check internet). Average of 15 mil per relic site in null.
I still think it's a good average if you focus on what you're doing though. But I agree that the prices have been dropping. |

I should also add that whether you can actually make isk depends upon the availability of sites. When I was in sov null, the systems would all get picked over and there were very few sites around when I would log on. I recently moved back to npc null and the same thing seems to be going on there as well - in the last three or 4 days I have only seen one site and a handful of whs. Now in the deadend lowsec system where i lived for some time, the sites would spawn regularly and there would always be one or two up at my playing time. |

It's going to get boring, it's going to get not worth it.
But that's no reason not to do it for a while. I made about 10 million an evening in deep lowsec doing hacking work. Which is a pretty decent take for a newbie who hasn't gotten bored with hacking yet. You should fly out to lowsec and try it for a while. Sure, you'll get bored with it, and other stuff will become more lucrative. But it'll be fine for a while.
Highsec hacking is not really worth it at all. All it's really good for is practice - getting good at probing and hacking and stuff.
And the only hacking sites in the game that have rats are in wormholes. Lowsec, highsec, and nullsec don't have rats as I understand it. |

I've been doing sites for ISK after having a few people talk to me in private about how to do it. My skills are not such that I can quickly pull off lowsec sites yet, but highsec sites are a breeze. You can find them, they do exist, and they vary in profitability. The most I've ever made from a single site is about 1.2m. The least I've made is from relic sites (sometimes just garbage that's not even worth flying around to sell).
I had a run of bad luck at the start, but I think that might be because I mostly found relic sites. They routinely return less for me.

I don't think data sites are worth it like they used to, but if you cherry pick you can get lucky and get a nice blueprint. Apart from that I find that it complements Invention a little better nowadays, since decryptors are more readily available (and thus, cheaper). They might have lowered in value but that's mainly because they are easier to aquire nowadays. What is lost in per-unit value is (somewhat) offset by volume. For a new player hacking in lowsec should feel like an activity worth doing. Be sure to fit a cargo scanner, and prioritize the good stuff. |
