Hey. So I'm training mining/ice mining on my main.
I want to use this alt to train up all the refining skills needed. Refining, Refining efficiency, etc, up to Ice Processing so I can get the lowest waste possible when I want to refine them.
My question is:
1. Since I am starting new with this alt, I will have 0 standings with all npc corps. If I get all the refining/processing skills up, how much will I still lose when trying to refine with 0 standings.
1.1 Is it worth training social skills so I can get less robbed by the npc corp when refining?
2. We own a POS. Do refining skills when refining at POS matter?
2.1 Would I be better off, with no standings but semi-max skills in refining/reprocessing, doing it @ the POS than at the NPC station? |

5% tax I believe

Yes. Get the standing if you can, or have someone with the standing doing the refining. Otherwise you're just losing money.
Quote:2. We own a POS. Do refining skills when refining at POS matter? Yes, and POS refineries max out at 75%, so you'll be throwing 25% of your yield away. Just don't

Well. Sorta. Indirectly.
Whether you train them or not has no effect on the refining capability itself. They increase the speed at which your standings will rise though for better refining. |

If you are just making a refining alt, you don't need any of the material specialization skills: 50% facilities + Refining 5 + Refinery Efficiency 5 + 2% Refining Implant and you can refine / reprocess ANYTHING and get 100% yield. Saves you from training all the ore / ice / scrap metal processing skills and prerequisites.
You still need 5 / 0.75 = 6.67 standing at a station with 50% facilities to avoid refining tax. |

Remember you can just sit in station on alt and share the rewards if you have another acc/friends to mission for you. |

Tip: a cargo expanded and rigged Amarr Magnate frigate is great for up to level 3 courier missions, which is the level most people grinding standing aim for).
Tip: Train Connections 3, and you will be doing level 2 missions typically after one or two level 1 missions. |

The one thing to bear in mind. Just because you run courier missions, doesn't mean that the storyline missions you get will be courier missions. Not important for Refining standing, but useful for other things. Steve Ronuken for CSM 9!-á I'm starting early :) Handy tools and an SDE conversion Twitter: @fuzzysteve on Twitter |

Ice can get 100% at a POS refinery. Ore is capped at 75%. |

The Connections skill improves effective standing, thus lowering your refining tax (the "we take" part) noticably.
The problem is, Connections skill only works if your stnading is positive. If it is 0.00, there is no effect. You have to raise it to 0.01, and as far as I know, the only way of doing that is by doing a single mission for the corp. Any kind of mission. Many corps offer mining missions, which presumably you're well equipped to do.
But once you're at 0.01+, it's well worth training Connections to 4. At effective standing 6.67 or 6.70 (I can never remember which of the two - not that it matters) you pay zero refining tax. When your standing is close to zero, you get +0.40 effective standing per levle of Connections skill, but once your standing get to around 3.50 or 4.00 or so, the bonus becomes a bit smaller, maybe more like +.25/lvl or +0.30/lvl, so if you intend to work your refining tax down to zero, you may not want to train Connections skill higher than 3 or even 2.
The other Social skillz help you improve standing slightly faster when missioning (at least ISTR that there's one that does that), and reduces the sales tax or the roker's free (one skill for each). Or increase your monetary reward or Loyalty Point reward from missions. |
