there might be no atmosphere but that doesn't mean you wouldn't want symmetrical ships due to forces acting on the chassis from engines and impacts
furthermore you wouldn't necessariy want lots of flat areas all over the place because they won't be very resistant to incoming fire. This also stems from the fact that the Caldari draw a lot of Japanese influences regarding their lore. In Japan, asymmetry is often favored over symmetry, specifically in art, fashion, and architecture. Watch Fred Fred Frederation and stop cryptozoologist! Fight against the brutal genocide of fictional creatures across New Eden! Is that a metaphor? Probably not, but the fru-fru- people will sure love it! |

How can anyone say the Raven isn't a sexy ship? It's better looking than the Sticky back Plastic, matches and prayers that hold the Minmitar ones together. The Merlin is certainly the best looking frigate out in New Eden, and anything with the Scorpion hull is just plain eye-catching.
I'd still love to see a Raven, or a Scorpion, being able to fit a Covert Ops Cloak to it, could you imagine the panic that would go through a pilots mind if a wing of "Bird of Prey" (PVP fitted) Ravens decloaked 100km from them? |

I have a problem flying asymmetrical ships, it just bugs me-so I fly other stuff. The Raven hull would be awesome without that wing crud going on. But I am silly that way, I need my art work, candles, decor, etc. to be symmetrical as well or it annoys me I do wish it looked more like a bird of prey from star trek, but then everyone would want one. |

symmetry is actually very unappealing
want proof .. think of a famous person you think is 'teh hotness'
now mirror the left and right hand sides of their face and compare them to the original natural image guess which of the 3 images you will find the 'most visually appealing'

Caitlyn Tufy wrote:Caleidascope wrote:There is no atmosphere in space, there is no need for symmetry. Not from the drag, but the mass still affects ship's balance. So the shape of the ship may be decided by whatever the center of mass is. Perhaps with Raven, the smaller wings simply have far more mass per m3 than the large wing side. Nope. EVE propulsion systems and force/load/stress management systems do not require symmetry or the balancing of ship mass.

This is absolutely untrue.
Look at miss universe winners over the years. Trust me, they have great symmetry. It's possibly the largest determinant of physical attraction because typically, symmetry equals healthier genetics.
Yeah I did a couple papers on this crap. |

All I want is engine quantity/size/placement proportional to the apparent location of mass. Yes, you can have a ship that requires a lot of engine mounted to a very small part and not much engine mounted to a big part, and not spin in circles when you turn them on, but only if the densities are wildly different in the two sections. But really, how many people look at a strawberry and think 'you know, then end with the green bits is hollow and thus lighter?' |

Oh good, another Caldari ship symmetry thread.
So I'll regurgitate what I've always said, symmetry is not needed, but balance is. There is a difference. I like the looks of the Merlin, Drake, Ferox, Hookbill, etc., because of their symmetry. On the other hand, the Heron is not symmetrical, but it is balanced, and is still a cool looking ship.
IMHO, the best looking ship in the game is the Kestrel. It is asymmetrical, but it still looks balanced and like there is a purpose to it's asymmetry. Ships like the Moa and worse yet, the Blackbird, look asymmetrical, but also unbalanced and like their design serves no purpose other than the CCP designers built the ships around a lego design built by their toddlers.
The Raven is a nice looking ship, regardless of it's asymmetry. Sure, I wish the one wing didn't have all that crap hanging on it, but it is by no means the worst looking Caldari ship because of it. The Blackbird would have been a very cool looking ship if they'd stuck with the general design of the port (left) side. Ships like the Blackbird and Rohk irritate me, because the designers were actually on to something great for part of the design, and then crapped all over the rest. The Rohk has probably one of the best looking BS back 1/3's in the game, but they had to go and stick the locomotive train engine on the front. Why mess with a good thing? |
