And a couple of hours later another Assault Frigate, this time a Vengeance, dies to the Comet:
http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=22293418
The next plex was potentially more interesting with a Slasher and an Incursus. I figured I would get double-webbed by them and have to kill the Slasher quickly before dealing with the Incursus at range.
That was the plan, anyway. But when I warped in I found them going at it hammer and tongs on the beacon. I hit the burner and double-clicked to get a bit of distance but when I hit GÇÿeGÇÖ nothing happened and I continued to sail into the distance. Does anyone else have an occasional problem where their navigation hotkeys fail to respond until you log? Anyway, by the time I manually turned around the Slasher had finished off the Incursus and very wisely scarpered.
My disappointment vanished a couple of systems later when I snared a kiting Slicer. I had followed him into the plex on the off chance that he wouldnGÇÖt immediately hit his MWD and kitescrub me to death. He didnGÇÖt, and I found him very unwisely sitting on the beacon. He melted in a most satisfactory manner:
http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=22293843
The Comet finally met its end at the hand of a Hawk. He was much faster than I expected and had a scram that extended further than my own meta 4. Still, a great fight that ended with him at one quarter shield and me with a crispy afterburner. I really should have remembered to sic my drones at him. Must remember! Must remember!

This is why I choose lowsec. I have to get up early in the morning so I donGÇÖt want a late night but quickly log in before bed, about an hour before downtime. I tidy up some manufacturing jobs on an alt and set a couple of market order while logging Zappity in. Zaps undocks, spots a cruiser on scan, and dives into the medium plex.
Rupture on the beacon! Target, scram, web, orbit, rails, drones. Oh my goodness, that is one HEFTY armour tank he has. Better kill his drones before settling inGǪ OK, done. Now we check dscan and, um, wait. Three reloads later:
http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=22307935
He was apparently trying a new fit and was a good sport about the loss. I hop back to Hevrice to pick up some more supplies. While in the station I hear of a Comet in the next system over. LetGÇÖs go! By the time I get there the Comet has departed but he is rapidly replaced by a Cormorant who is simply desperate to kill some frigates. That didnGÇÖt work out for him so well, seeing there were two of us:
http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=22307936
I really should go to bed now, so I head toward the Hevrice gate. But before I jump, someone spots an Omen on scan. So back to the medium plex I go and land a scram on the unfortunate cruiser. A remarkably short time later, another killmail arrives:
https://zkillboard.com/detail/37717372/
Now, is lowsec always like this? No. Sometimes you wander for an hour seeing nothing but farmers. But that isnGÇÖt usually the case. I almost always get at least one fight when I log in, and I rarely log in for an extended period.
Of course, just because you FIND a fight doesnGÇÖt mean you WIN the fight! Although now that I think about it I have not been losing many lately. It must be getting boring for you readers! I think it must be time to step things up again. Maybe I should get some of those racial Cruiser skills to 5 some time.. Zappity's Adventures for a taste of lowsec. |

A brief encounter with a noob in an Incursus (http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=22321384) and his pod (http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=22321383). I sent him the lecture and shared some fits. Anyone who starts in an Incursus canGÇÖt be all bad, right?
But my Comet was defeated soon after by a Rifter and Merlin who just out damaged my rail fit under webs. Sigh - I should have brought blasters.
Loss: http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=22327881
When I got back home I hopped into a blasty Incursus and headed out the door. There was an obvious farmer in a small plex near the station but I warped in anyway, because why not? I got a bit of a shock when I landed on the gate at the same time as a Talwar, though. We sailed into the plex together and he took off like a stabbed rat (not the warp core type, you understand) under MWD.
I snared him with an overheated scram at about 10km and my web soon saw me zipping around him at optimal. Ha! ThatGÇÖll learn him for not fitting rockets! Actually, it was a good fight and he still dealt some nasty damage.
http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=22329548
A little later I am up near Villyleerer or whatever itGÇÖs called. I decided to set up a mini-base there to avoid those nasty long trips home in a Velator. I took on a Comet and was completely cleaned up by his blasty damage fit.
[Federation Navy Comet, blasty DPS] Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Small Ancillary Armor Repairer, Nanite Repair Paste Damage Control II
1MN Afterburner II Warp Scrambler II Fleeting Propulsion Inhibitor I
Light Neutron Blaster II, Federation Navy Antimatter Charge S Light Neutron Blaster II, Federation Navy Antimatter Charge S [empty high slot]
Small Hybrid Burst Aerator I Small Nanobot Accelerator I Small Anti-Explosive Pump I
Hobgoblin II x3 Warrior II x3
I stole his fit and went for a roam. A few systems over I spotted some ships: an Enyo, an Incursus (probably farmer) and a Thrasher. Hmm. I wouldnGÇÖt mind a go at any of them (one at a time). I first stumble across the Enyo on an acceleration gate. He is loitering with intent and I have a quick look to see whether he is rail or blaster fit. Unfortunately, he is blasters so I pull range with an overheated burner. I donGÇÖt think I can get under his blasters! Now if I had been in my rail CometGǪ
The Enyo warped away as soon as the Thrasher landed near the gate. He was about 40 off, a solid indication of an arty fit which a cursory glance confirmed. Aha, good stuff. I warped to the next plex and dived in after the Incursus (not a corp mate of either of the others). He was farming the plex semi-AFK at 30km but I still managed to get him into hull before he warped off, assisted by his stabs. By this time, the Thrasher had joined us and moved away from the beacon in the opposite direction. Cautious, this one, but clearly wanting to fight.
I moved to a safe and watched the plex for a moment. The Incursus soon appeared on the 5 degree scan (does he not know how to use dscan?) and since I am already aligned I soon cover the distance back to the gate.
The Incursus activates the gate. I am confused. The thought crosses my mind that they are in the same corp or perhaps dual boxing. Either way, IGÇÖm not overly concerned by the farming Incursus and I want to have a crack at the Thrasher. I figure that if the Thrasher pilot is going to be distracted it is going to be right now. I jump in.
He is sitting 30 off the gate. I overheat the afterburner and scram and leap at him. He locks me, gets a volley away (ouch) but then I am in a close orbit, having locked him down. It doesnGÇÖt take long to melt him down.
http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=22331916
We chatted for a bit and it turns out he WAS a little distracted by the Incursus and tried to warp to the wrong (non-aligned) celestial. A very satisfying set-up and fight. Zappity's Adventures for a taste of lowsec. |

Zappity wrote:This is the GÇ£You shouldnGÇÖt lose your pod in lowsecGÇ¥ lecture so I donGÇÖt have to keep typing it when I pod noobs. Admittedly a little longer than the local version! This applies equally to highsec. Lowsec does not have warp disruption bubbles. This means that you can always warp your pod away if it hasnGÇÖt been tackled. A shipGÇÖs scan resolution can be increased to the point where it can instantly lock even a pod and you will often find these in gate camps. The average PvP ship you will be fighting, however, will take at least a second to lock your pod. This means you can escape. This is the important bit. When you know you are going to die, align your ship to a celestial or other warpable object. Then, spam the Warp To key until you have actually entered warp. As soon as your pod is ejected from your exploded ship you will enter warp. Hotkeys are your friend: Align is GÇÿAGÇÖ and Warp To is GÇÿWGÇÖ by default. Edit: Rubicon frigates will warp significantly faster than pods. This means it is a good idea to choose a celestial that is difficult to identify (i.e. a moon) just by watching your capsule's path. Otherwise there may be a nasty surprise waiting for you at the end of your warp. I suggest making a GÇÿpod saverGÇÖ tab which contains a list of the celestial types that you choose plus all ships, just in case. Just click to it when you are dying. Thanks to Urkhan Law for the tip. So click on a celestial, press A, then spam W until you enter warp. And donGÇÖt loiter on the celestial since you may be followed. Bounce from it straight to a system safe. DonGÇÖt warp to a station or gate if you can avoid it since it is more likely a player will be there. And if you are anything like Zappity, you will be flashy-red killable! The only thing that should kill you in this scenario is lag. I canGÇÖt do much about that. Oh, another thing. DonGÇÖt just log off at a safe spot if you have a timer that will keep you stuck in space. http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=20830744 (sorry Enol Ankou, you were study material). Otherwise, some meany might find you with combat scanner probes and pod you, just to find out what's inside. Ditto for stations.
Smartbombs happen. Other than that though I don't see why you shouldn't warp to a gate. even if a frigate is there it shouldn't be able to lock and kill your pod before your pod jumps through - except for lag. Did they change the pod mechanics?
The other thing that new players trying to protect their pod need to watch out for is session timer. After you lose your ship there is a session timer. So when you try to burn back to the gate/station but don't quite make it, you won't be able to jump/dock your pod either. You will have to select a different distant celestial and try to warp to it.
Finally there are just some glitches in the game. For example warp to station/gate doesn't always do what it says. Sometimes it will warp you outside jump or docking range. If you have that station/gate selected on your overview and some instalocking ship is there you probably will not have time to select a different distant celestial and warp before your pod is killed.

Did they change the pod mechanics? No, they didn't change them. You just can't jump if you have a criminal aggression timer, and gates are easy destinations to follow. I have caught a few that way, especially since the warp speed changes which slowed pods down relative to frigates.

Three Battle Nereus, sitting on a plex! Whatever am I to do about it? I know! Kill them! Except that obvious bait is, well, obvious. But that has NEVER stopped me before so why start now? Especially since one of the pilots has been giving us lip for the last few days in local and there is a competition to accumulate his kill mails.
So I put the call out and a couple of corpies were soon winging their way over from a couple of systems away. I warped to the plex, landed tackle and started chipping away at them.
Sure enough, I am halfway through his armour when the remote reps kick in and bring his shields all the way up. Thankfully my corpies have landed and spread their points around while focusing fire. He goes down but my nice little Incursus goes down.with him. Oh well, it was worth it!
Battle Nereus: https://zkillboard.com/detail/38328461/
They were each fitted identically (yes, all three died). I only wish that the faction reps were more expensive. Still, a surprisingly resilient fit so well done.
Unfortunately, our nemesis was surprisingly quiet about his loss. Maybe next time. Zappity's Adventures for a taste of lowsec. |

I am in the Comet of Doom. Or something. Really, I name my Velator the same way so it doesnGÇÖt hold THAT much significance. Anyway, I have half an hour to kill (yes, IGÇÖm extremely casual) so head out of Ishomilken down the chain toward the middle of the Cal/Gal zone. As I leave I see someone in corp chat mentioning that they had just been killed by a nasty Coercer. Lo and behold, a few minutes later I spot the culprit in Nikkishina looking guilty in the Coercer. Or maybe IGÇÖm projecting. Whatever. Anyway, how hard can a Coercer be to kill? I let the victim know that his nemesis is only a hop away if he wishes to seek revenge and warp into the plex. I figured that I would probably die and he would be just in time to mop up. Unfortunately (sort of) the Coercer only managed to get me down to 20% hull before popping! And just then my corpie landed in the plex, ready for action! I felt a bit guilty about that so offered him the loot which he declined (thank you!)
Coercer: http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=22918256
A few jumps later I stumbled onto an adventurous Tristan who was more than willing to have a go. I have been dieing to those gimmicky neut Tristans lately (http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=22590170, http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=22585516) but decided to dive in anyway since I was fitted with rails. I thought I should be able to stay out of neut range if I flew intelligently.
As you can see I am an eternal optimist.
Surprisingly, this time it actually worked so although a neut was firmly applied as soon as I landed tackle the victim was unable to maintain it due to my superior speed. He died but it was a VERY close fight. His 400mm plates with three armour rigs took quite a while to chew through.
Tristan: http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=22918475
I complimented him on his tank. GÇ£Not enough! ;)GÇ¥ was the nice reply.
The next night I had only ten minutes to kill but decided to log in anyway. I was still sitting in the Comet of Doom so hit Undock in Isho and d-scan. Algos. Ibis. The Ibis probably isnGÇÖt much of a threat (but you never can tell in lowsec!) so I head for the Algos in the plex and land with him about 10 km away. I burn in and apply a scram and web, keep at range successfully (since orbiting will hurt my tracking more than his drone DPS) and kill him without much difficulty.
http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=22927874
I note an Astero on dscan and quickly gobble the loot and withdraw to a safe. It turns out the Astero was a corp mate hunting me so I was quite proud I had spotted him during the brief decloak window when that became apparent. Did I mention I podded the Algos pilot? Well, I did.
http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=22927873
He looked like a noob so I convoed him and applied the lecture in the form of a link. He was grateful for a few tips so I sent him my fit and a few iskies to encourage him to keep exploding.
I love lowsec. I was engaged literally one minute after I logged in. Great stuff! But alas that was all I had time for - I'm off to watch the F1 with my better half.

THIS is what people should bring to asteroid belts:
Thorax: http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=23016170
And then block my convo attempt when I realise that my victim is a noob. That's probably why I could kill him in my Incursus. I traded him his loot back when I noticed him in the same station anyway, for which I received a terse "thanks" email. I sense some butthurt. I don't like chasing people away from lowsec.
Anyway, I reshipped and headed out for a wander. Shortly afterward I was landed on by a small gang of frigates while I was trying my best to dispatch one of their corp mates. I am still not very good at this sort of thingies.
First, I aligned to a celestial in roughly the opposite direction from the gang. Correct so far. I was instantly tackled by a kiting Slicer but only webbed by a single Incursus. So I killed the Incursus and then switched to Spike and Warriors for the Slicer. Too late. I think I should have burned away from the Incursus first.

I land on a Novice acceleration gate in my rail Comet and spot a Tristan sitting at 140km. I canGÇÖt catch him at that distance so I jump into the plex and open the scanner window. I choose an unopened plex 20AU away and warp to it at 10, hoping the Tristan's curiosity would get the better of him.
When I land I immediately align back to the Novice and check short scan. Sure enough, a Tristan soon appears. He drops out of warp about 30 km from me (warped to 50 I think) so I overheat the burner and manage to land a scram. I don't know if he tried to get away - I suspect not.
This was a very close fight. Far too late I realised that a significant amount of damage was coming from his guns. I tried to increase my range from 5 up to 8km but was just about capped out. I hit structure and shut down the scram and burner for a couple of cycles, hoping my drones would finish him. We crept down in structure together, our reps delaying the inevitable for one of us.
And then I capped out. I hate that audio. "Your capacitor is empty." I manually activated the rails for one last attempt and happened to land a lucky shot, wrecking his hull! I was at 24% structure.
A sizable chunk of errors on my part meant this was a close fight. But against a very capable pilot, so what the hell!

A Stabber Fleet Issue was stalking me around the system while I was tootling about in my Algos. I guess he wanted some attention so I decided to give it to him in the form of an Enyo:
[Enyo, ZappityGÇÖs vampy ions]
Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Small Ancillary Armor Repairer Pseudoelectron Containment Field I Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II
1MN Afterburner II Fleeting Propulsion Inhibitor I Faint Epsilon Warp Scrambler I
Light Ion Blaster II, Void S Light Ion Blaster II, Void S Small Diminishing Power System Drain I Light Ion Blaster II, Void S Light Ion Blaster II, Void S
Small Hybrid Burst Aerator I Small Processor Overclocking Unit I
I undocked to find him waiting for me on the docking ring. I told you he was stalking me. Since I don't like station games I used my insta-undock before making my way to the Medium plex. He must have guessed my intention because he landed at the same time on the acceleration gate.
We were only 10 km apart so I went straight into a 500m orbit after turning everything on. He landed a single solid hit on me with his guns which destroyed my shield but that was the only time his guns were relevant. And then he launched his drones, five Warriors which I instantly targeted and started blapping with my blasters. He didn't notice until I had killed three in quick succession. He then pulled the remaining two before launching a fresh set of five. So I started killing them, too.
His drone DPS was pretty good and my repper was running hot, slowly burning up. Unfortunately, my cap was going in the opposite direction and starting to look worryingly low by the time I judged up could give the repper a break. He pulled his last two drones back just in time and I immediately turned the repper off to let my cap recover. Just in time!
And so we settled down to it. I reloaded and repaired my repper, switched to Void and tried to break his tank. He dipped into structure but then started repping immediately. And again. And again. And again.
And again. Stalemate! I considered logging an alt in to neut him out but decided that it wouldn't be particularly satisfying after such a good fight. He had turned his scram off, either to conserve cap of to encourage me to leave I can't say. So I waited until my orbit was roughly pointing in the right direction and warped back to the station. I complimented him on his tank (which I suspect was dual repper) and we parted ways.
So no kill mail for your perusal, unfortunately. However, it was probably something like this earlier loss:
http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=22423499
Tanky enough for my 346 DPS. A shame - it would have been a nice kill. Still, I successfully managed my tank, heat, reloads, repairs and cap as well as the opponentGÇÖs damage. Quite satisfying despite the lack of a kill. Zappity's Adventures for a taste of lowsec. |

So, a Harpy. I can take him in a rail Comet, canGÇÖt I? Um, sure... I am even less convinced when I finally get eyes on him and see that he is rail fit. I certainly wasnGÇÖt going to be kiting him effectively. But what the hell, letGÇÖs go.
I jump on him and land a scram and web. I disable the scram as soon as I see he is afterburner fit (I figure he wonGÇÖt run from a little Comet) and set my distance to 7500m, chipping away at his shield. He is hitting me pretty hard so I dive into a close orbit and turn my guns off, leaving the job of attacking to my drones. He spots this and immediately switches his web and guns to my hobbies, making short work of them. As he does this I switch back to range and start pounding him again.
His shield is dropping pretty fast and I expect his repper to kick in any second. But then he drops into armor, just as he starts firing at me again. ThatGÇÖs strange! I unleash my second flight of three drones and keep hammering away, hoping to beat him down before he kills me (or remembers his reps).
And then his armour jumps up! Even stranger! Needless to say I am VERY interested in seeing his fit now so I keep up the damage until he pops.

If in doubt, fire! Unless thereGÇÖs a Daredevil around. In which case discretion should be the better part of valour. Unless you are Zappity, in which case go back for seconds!
There were two Merlins in the system, named identically and evidently farming to their heartsGÇÖ content. I jumped into a plex after the first, watching short scan for the second to appear. Just the sort of sneaky trick a nasty farmer WOULD play. But, to my surprise, a Daredevil appeared.
My Comet was hitting the Merlin pretty hard, but I still aligned out away from the beacon to ensure a timely getaway when the Daredevil arrived. He landed just as the Merlin hit hull which I found intensely annoying. I warped off and waited in my safe until the Daredevil disappeared and farming again ruled the day.
Rinse and repeat. Well, almost repeat since this time I stuffed up my align and the Daredevil landed a scram. I said goodbye to my Comet, thinking that I could at least take the Merlin with me. And then he warped off!
A bait Merlin farming fit! I couldn't help but be impressed as I limped home in my Velator. And annoyed that I fell for it. I will get my revenge!

IGÇÖve decided that I donGÇÖt much like the Firetail. I think it is underpowered for solo work. Two of us, both in arty Firetails, had a Vengeance tackled in a plex. After a couple of reloads we had to warp off due to incoming damage - we just couldnGÇÖt break him. Two of us!
Next, I found an arty Firetail who wanted to fight my Comet. I was in armour and halfway through my nanite charges in the repper when the controls stopped responding. You know that sinking feeling when you realise you have disconnected and it is just a matter of time before 'socket closed' pops up? I was sure that my pod would be popped (ouch) but hastily logged back in anyway. When I saw that the login screen was showing me as still in the Comet I thought it was just a cruel taunt.
But as grid loaded, there was the Firetail, still plinking away at my hull! I turned the repper back on, loaded Spike and drove him off. And then I killed him when he emerged from the station in an Atron. And I got his pod. I think he panicked instead of just redocking. Haha.
Atron: http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=23025067 Pod: http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=23025066
Having said that, this Firetail (http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=23025065) had some nasty DPS. If this fit had something better than the nanofiber things may have ended differently.
Anyway, I think it is time for a change. Gallente Cruiser V is rapdidly ticking along so I am going to bring some new hulls in. Zappity's Adventures for a taste of lowsec. |

Hey man I really like your stories, I relate to them well since solo frig roams in FW space is one of my favourite things to do in Eve. You should consider making a blog, there are lots of good free blog hosting sites, I would read it for sure! Keep up the good work and fly dangerous o7 |

I just had an exciting experience. With my freighter! Not exactly a typical Zappity story, I know but I bought a freighter for my alt. Ishomilken borders the highsec system Usi and I am terribly lazy. So I bought a freighter for my alt to bring my hulls in with. Since I am EXTRA lazy, I have been getting the hulls public couriered to Usi, meaning that I don't have to endure many freighter jumps.
Anyway, I jumped the freighter into Ishomilken and set up a limited engagement with Zappity before decloaking for the warp to the station dock bookmark. As soon as it decloaked Zappity locked and double-webbed it. The freighter entered warp instantly - that really is a cool trick. Rinse and repeat on the way out after using the insta-undock bookmark. Anyway, not very exciting for you guys but quite satisfying and filled with tension for me! At least it was the first time I did it. IGÇÖm already bored with freighters (it really doesn't take long) although they are extremely useful.
And because you read this far, I will also tell you about a noob I killed in a Tormentor. My interest was aroused by the name on his ship: "#2 of 6". I initially thought it was an attempt to scare off potential killers by suggesting there were other ships waiting in the wings. Naturally I took no notice of this and went for the throat regardless. A very odd fit:

I chatted with the pilot in local and asked what went on. He was a new PvPer and was planning on learning by trial and error. His first task was to lose six Tormentors, each with different fit styles. Great stuff! So I killed him again:
https://zkillboard.com/kill/39186757/
I sent him 20m and left him alone after that, not wanting to scare him off. Next, I came across a Hawk who clearly wanted a fight. I gave him one for the minute it took for it to become clear that I couldn't quite break his shields. So I cheated and summoned a corpie in another T1 frigate who happened to be in system at the time.
A neutral Executioner arrived as we were breaking him down. Those things can have nasty DPS if they are fit for scram kiting so I watched him closely, ready to switch to him if he was too aggressive. I was pretty confident I'd be able to punch through his defence if he was damage fit. But he scarpered to 30km immediately, leaving me to wonder what he was there for.
The Hawk died. It was tremendously satisfying for some reason:

Oh, and what was in the freighter at the outset? A stack of Thorax and Vexor hulls, of course! Zappity's Adventures for a taste of lowsec. |
