Since exploration has been crapped on, I'm going to start ratting for fun and profit and gradually move into PvP.
I'm new, so I'll need to use a frigate in the interim while I train toward cruisers. Besides being a good rat-catcher, I will be solo so I'll need some survivability against gankers and hopefully turn the tables on the amateur ones my level.
Is there a significant cost difference between missile boats and turret ships? Is one better for ratting? Is one better to train towards cruiser and beyond?
For skill progression I am thinking Kestrel -> Drake -> Tengu
Does this make sense? Is ratting and PvP too far apart to skill towards both?
Thanks for any advice. |

Yah most the skills help in pve and pvp.
Navi skills get a greater emphasis in pvp. Along with electronic warfare skills.

They will be slow from a ratting standpoint but will provide you some survivability and PVP management based on your progression - kiting Condor.
Hookbill works quite well in that line - you can graduate from it to a Hawk if you wan to stay with missiles.

Might want to pass the drake for later, saves you a month of battlecruiser V. I suggest ratting (nullsec) in a stealth bomber for missile users, they are good fun. Bomber takes you to all sorts of pvp, too :)
If you find missile frigates to your fancy, Amarr mixes really well with Caldari. Amarr features: GÇó 700dps ratting purifier with TP and mse+ab tank GÇó Excellent fast lock interceptor malediction GÇó Excellent armor tackler vengeance
These really complement the caldari lineup: GÇó 4 utility mid bomber manticore GÇó ... interceptor crow (not sure if good at anything) GÇó excellent shield tackler Hawk

Honestly man, just take any ol' pvp fit whatever out to the low sec belts and wait for some one to come at you.
I normally advise new guys against this for a few reasons. The folks who are out liking for dedicated pvp have a good idea of wether or not they can take you before they warp in. They are also likely to be locals who have back up near by. So if you're lookingfor pvp then go out and look for it. If you want to bait-rat then have buddies of your own in system. When some one lands on one of you then converge and destroy.
If you are just liking to rat then get add far away from the belt warp in as is reasonable. The rats will follow you and the extra distance gives you some time to decide if you want Rio take the fight or gtfo.
Active tank pvp fits and any shield tank it's a good choice for this activity. Kiting frigs are not. Use a combat frig. Also, I second the suggestion about the vexor. I love my vexor. I have 4 different fuss that I use for her and wether I'm doing pvp or pve they are all fit for pvp.
Have fun out there man!
Edit: auto correct can kiss my ass. I'm nit going back to make all the changes on my phone. If something doesn't make sense then just try to read between the lines. Lol |

I have always considered Minmatar ships to be the best for overall PVP. Gallente Blaster boats do rank high as well. Really just comes down to style. In most cases, Caldari missile boats are the absolute worst. |
