I am speaking purely of cosmetic changes. ;) but you know how, whenever you put a gun on a starship, you get two little guns that actually appear on your ship model in game? That is quite a nice touch, and one I like very much :)
The problem is, on some of the caldari ships, the location of these guns absolutely sucks.
On some it is excellent - like the Merlin and Osprey - they guns are mounted on the ends of what you could actually believe are gun mounts according to the ships architecture.
On others (scorp, moa, blackbird) the guns for one side are all just lined up nose to stern and slapped on the nearest flat part of hull. That looks terrible :( It's also completely unrealistic - such an arrangement would mean you couldn't use half the guns at all, and more often than not the guns are mounted on something that is clearly not a gun mount but an engine housing or something.
I really like the way on certain gallente ships the guns are spread round in different places on the hull, attached to features where they look like normally mounted guns - putting all the guns in a looong strip in a random place just looks silly.

Who ever designed the caldari ships DEFINITELY was symmetry impaired :) 'Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law' |

... Merlin always *****s me up when it comes to adding weapons; in hangar both turret mounts are located on the wing tips, but once you undock you see one of the guns got mysteriously transferred on top of the*****pit, and yet another on the end of central 'wing' thingie... :s

Edited by: Kyn Aerie on 22/08/2003 19:25:38 If I remember right, there is a reason there are two gun mounts for every gun you add to your ship.
With one mount only, your ship would either have to realign itself or not allow fire from that gun when engaging a target on the other side of the ship. Otherwise you'd be firing your gun (or mining laser) through your ship.
For this reason, they added gun mounts to the opposite side of each ship. This may be part of the reason why they appear to be in places that don't look very aesthetically pleasing.
This is also the reason why only one gun from each pair of mounts fires at a time. Because there really is only one gun just with two mounts.
I could be wrong, but I won't admit it if I am :).

At least the "tail" of the scorp looks very nice with a few turrets on top. I don't know about the rest of it...

I have to disagree. The "lined up guns" (many guns in one line) look awesome in my opinion. Check the Armageddon for example. It has 5 Turret slots, that are mounted in a line, at a perfect designed gun-mounting hullpart. Leave this alone. But i agree with the rest of the topic starters opinion. Please dont mount guns on engines or*****pits *g terrible.
And fix this bug where turrets change their position when undocking after fitting them to look symentrical. ugly. (ive petitioned this allready)

Maybe if the guns pointed away from the ship in a 'broadside' fasion a strip would look better.
But the way each gun points dead ahead at the gun infront of it is silly - you fire a salvo and all your guns should explode. ;)
And on the moa, at least, the gun mountings are (a) on the underside of the engine housing (b) on the corner of the box that serves as the hull
Not very realistic looking.
