hello all first off i am a returning player with only about 6 months time total played but i feel i have a ok grasp [i think] of the game, that being said whenever i get into combat with someone i die instantly within a few seconds and wanted to know if maybe im just bad and have no clue or is it because my skills and fittings are so low grade [because ive only got 2 months under my belt this time around].i understand that the game is about player skill and not really your ship and fittings but i just was wondering if,with everything else aside, would you say im doing something wrong or people are just miles above me in player skill and they have all the shiny things? i appreciate any help and thank you for your time |

Just keep looking for fights and eventually you will learn what fights you can win and when you have no chance and should just run. I would also suggest that you join RvB which will help you get some experience with both small scale PVP and the occasional bigger fleets, as well as players who have plenty of experience you can learn from
But if you want to stay solo, use cheap ships and clones. Dont worry about your KB stats, as you get more confident and learn what to look out for you will see it getting more and more green. Also talk to the people who blow you up, see if they are willing to give you some advice on what you did wrong. what could have been done better, what caused you to loose the fight. And keep in mind, sometimes its just pure luck that will determine if you win or loose Phoibe Enterprises official recruitment thread The Eve Reader - -áAudio Recordings of Eve Chronicles

You have to understand one thing about skill points: when we both sit in frigates only skill points related to those particular ships influence our ships capabilities. So I can have 43mil SP and you can have 5mil SP but if yours are all in frigs and related mods I don't have too much of an edge over you. I may act more reasonably in choosing ammo, tactics and stuff because of time I have spent in frigs (not the case really, I suck no matter what ship I fly) but SP-wise difference is not so big.
Just keep getting into fights and try to think about what lead to its outcome, whether you lose or win. Remember that there is no such thing as honorable fight in Eve so try not to rage over loses to "unfair" opponent who let his friends warp on you. You may be surprised but most of people who explode you will tell you what you did wrong or what you can improve. Of course there always are a-holes who will point and laugh but just shake it off and move on. I am not my skills but... http://eveboard.com/pilot/Schmata_Bastanold |

I assume that your PVP experience is in frigates, as is the case with most new players. Frig fights are usually over in a few seconds, even for veteran players, because the HP values of frigate hulls are so low. They are good ships to start PVP in because they are cheap to replace, but since the fights don't last long you have to develop the ability to dissect what went wrong (or what went right) during a given engagement.

EVE is a real bastard of a game to get into. Thats what makes every new pilot with a willingness to stick it out such a treasure worth cultivating. It's a few minutes well spent to give advice that can result in another player meaningfully contributing to EVE's overall experience.

That's right, frigates have pretty low HP values and hence fights are over quickly, sometimes near-instantly. It can be very hard to dissect what went wrong in that situation. One thing you might want to check after you blow up is your combat log (Menu > Accessories > Notifications and Logs) and your lossmail. Piece together what went wrong using this intel, if you died instantly you were probably shot in the face with blasters, or alpha'd from range with artillery. Some research changes confusion into:
You died because of sig bloom Ah! No wonder I died, I had my microwarpdrive running so I was very easy to hit.
You died because kiting failed Hm, I see now I was scrammed, not just disrupted. No wonder I couldn't use my MWD.
You died because your DPS was bad Huh... my damage is very low. Ah crap, I had the wrong ammo type against his resists!
Just some examples. At some point you are going to figure out the strengths and weaknesses of many ships, but it takes a lot of losses to truly embed all that information in your skull forever. There's no substitute for personal experience, just stick with it, evaluate your losses and fit cheaply untill you 'have the hang' of a certain hull. |
