This is purely an idea of mine, nothing has been suggested that an increase of subscription is planned.
But is the fact we dont have better servers a mear fact of money? Or does it honestly take weeks/months for an order to be installed? If a dev could answer this question then we could at least be clear on why we are still getting lag. The following suggestion could maybe benifit either situation.
Increase the subscription by $1 a month. This is less than 7% increase which i think is very fair in exchange for better attention paid to the server spec. To be honest with everything CCP has given us i'd be willing to pay this anyway.
Please keep this flame free, just remember this is 3 cents a day so lets not hear "omg i wont pay that". I think its maybe time we gave CCP something rather than expecting all the time.

I'm sure that one of the top 500 fastest servers on this earth is something you can order from walmart as they're surely massproduced..

$1 a month does not seem like much, but if you have multiple accounts it adds up fast. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

they're porting a 32 bit system to a 64 bit system.. installing new operating systems onto new hardware.. testing testing and more testing. This isn't off the shelf hardware either, it's built to order.
The fact that it's happening within 2-3 months I think is pretty remarkable.. sometimes just the lead times for certain items are 6-8 weeks. It's not a case of money, it's a case of there's a crapload of work involved.
I'd rather they take a bit longer if necessary and get the rollout right.. I'm prepared to put up with the lag a bit longer to get a smooth rollout ------------------------------------------- He's NOT the Jovian ambassador, He's a very Naughty boy! |

Only if it applies to macroers. They're taking up considerably more server time and resources then your average player afterall.

Exactly. And if people like me cancel their 3rd, 4th ... account, it won't reduce the lag, since I never play more than 2 at the same time, often only one.

To answer the first question, the server is on its way. That means they are fine money wise. Hell it means they are doing awsome money wise.
Second. Yes it does. While IBM might have the parts (the blades in this case) on hand. They don't just have the cluster siting around some were set up and ready to go, waiting for some one to hand them several million dollars. And not just anyone can set these things up. Part of the lead time is getting the right people in the right place.

well i cant see how it takes so damn long to get a server together. its not as if these things are rarely ordered. and for those of you with multiple accounts, if you can afford tens/hundreds of dollars a month you can afford a few more. if you have several accounts and it costs you all of your spare money and cant afford a penny more, you have serious social issues. i personally have 2 accounts and the price would not bother me. if they wouldnt use the extra money on servers, how about they spend it on staff and get some more numbers up there to increase testing ability and reduce time spent.

Its not "a server" in the normal sence of the word. It is thousands of computers acting together as one giant virtual computer (ish). Just installing the power systems and air conditioning needed can take weeks. They are also powerful enough that they have to get export clearence before it can leave the country.
Many companies brag if the sell a couple dozen of these machines in a year. They are quite rare.

Added "Suggestion:" to the topic or we'd have lots of people who never read the thread yelling at us demanding to know why they weren't informed of the increased subscription fee when there in fact isn't one.

Edited by: Commander Lock on 14/01/2006 18:19:55 No way. For the best part of a year we've been told to wait for things to get better, but infact the game seems to have got more buggy and there's a lot more lag then there used to be. If they start asking for more and the performance doesn't improve... then what? Do we get a refund? Do they start asking for more money? How much are we prepared to pay in the end?

Took me a bit to find some pics that would give you some idea of the scale of a supercomputer but here ya go:
some Spanish YARRDWARE
If you had something like a 80k people sending you $15 a month you might have one too :)

There should not be ANY monetary issues with getting the new system up and running. They're making at LEAST $300,000+ USD per month (that is a EXTREMELY conservative estimate, and is probably 1 or 2 hundred thousand more than that).
While I understand the excuse "this takes time", it doesn't satisfy the paying customer. This is something that should have been antipcipated far enough in advance, that I shouldn't have to log out of the F*cking game just because it takes me 10 minutes to undock from a station.
I paid for this game, and then I pay every month. Normally, for a game where you are CONSTANTLY spending money, the expectation of a lag free, well supported environment, is not unreasonable. I'm sick and tired of hearing people say things like "stay out of so and so system". Why should I have to stay out of these systems? Because their hardware can't handle the setup that THEY created? What kind of cop out is that? That's like your car blowing up when you try to start it, and me blaming YOU for using the car EXACTLY as it was intended. If I put a buy order out for something, and someone fills the order in Ours, I shouldn't have to log in at 3am just to get it for fear that I won't even be able to undock from the station due to lag.
I really could care less about how long it takes to get a cluster together, or the prep work involved. I own my own business (which does very well), and part of owning your own business is being able to deal with things in a timely manner. You have to think ahead. You don't get to react to something, after it happens, and then plan a sollution that takes several months to impliment...at least that's now how most successful businesses run.
If ANYTHING, I think a price REDUCTION is an order, at least until they fix this lag. The game is practically unplayable during the weekend hours that I usually have free time. It takes more than a minute just to loot a can, and sometimes I stare at a black screen for 3 minutes trying to undock, before getting out of my chair, washing some dishes, and returning 10 minutes later, only to be looking at a blank screen still.
This is unacceptable. If they even TALK about a subscription increase, I will cancel all my accounts, as I imagine a significant portion of other people will as well.
Fix the lag issue NOW.

It takes time. And no company with the world's most powerful super computer processing on market movement trends wouldn't have possibly realised that SWG would go and screw up their game which is why we've seen these latest 3K accounts or whatever it is into eve.
Meh why do I bother. Its a post with whinge. I'm not suffering any serious lag where am I. And even then, when I head to Ost or Rens or Jita. Its never sucks too bad for me. none of this "I'm undocking for like A trillion billion minutes."
So I dunno what the prob is.
Anyway to the original post. No thanks.

hmm, I think you are lucky with the lag issue then, or you just don't play at peak hours (which, unfortunately, is when I get the majority of my free time). I have a very good broadband connection, and download at over half a meg per second usually. The reason I'm on this forum right now actually, is because I was trying to undock from a station to do a mission, and it took more than 10minutes of black screen before I finally said "screw it" and just logged off.
that kind of thing really irritates me. When the game play is so bad, I am forced to log out. That really should not happen...ever. I don't care HOW packed the servers get.

wow...it just took me 67 seconds for my armor repairer to activate.
Such a quality gameplay experience has never been had on ANY other MMO I've ever played...and I've played some CRAP MMO's. Even Anarchy Online, in it's beta stages, with the random server crashes, was more playable than this is right now with 20K people online.
*cheers to Eve*

You are quite mad right?
You are aware some of the top super computers in the world are no longer mammoth crays? Cluster systems are built from commodity hardware all the time and anyone frm google to your normal universities even own them.
Special purpose mainframe type supercomps are good when you need tremendous power at the backbone for processing. It really depends on what kinda of data needs to be crunched.

Sony: Nope, no lag in the bazaar! Must be all your own problem, rather than our poor design and failure to correct it. Try buying a $500 video card? Wait, that won't work? Well, shoot.
Mythic: Nope, no lag in Emain Macha. Must be all your own problem, rather than our poor design and failure to correct it. Try buying a $500 video card? Wait, that won't work? Wait, there's *how* many Animists out there? With how many turrets each? Well, shoot. That's a design feature.
CCP: There's lag in heavily-populated systems. We're trying out various load balancing techniques to reduce it. We're currently waiting on the installation and testing of a world-class server cluster, which we could use to run simulations of nuclear explosions, but instead, will use to let you mine veldspar all day in 1.0 space. We're working on updating the code to run on 64-bit processors. We've bought a RAMSAN. We've got *the* man of Python working with us to see what we can do.
...You know, if dealing with the most transparent MMOG development company on the face of the planet, as they detail exactly what they're doing to face their current problems rather than ignore them, is such a horrible thing.. Maybe you all should just cancel.
Or just set a long skill training and go play some other MMOGs for awhile.
Either way, the rest of us will be enjoying the game.

Hardware of the kind and amount needed for a new cluster isn't just ordered off the shelf, it's partly built-to-order, and partly standard stuff, and needs to be delivered in one go.
That sorta **** takes a while :(
