So, it was 0400+ am and i thought it's just me and that i feel too cold, when i noticed a slight shaking.
That was odd ... but more odd was that weird sound that came in from the distance, as if it was a huge and heavy car accelerating at speeds not usually meant for huge, heavy cars.
Sooo the growling got closer and suddenly i feel the waves coming in.
Earthquake waves are weird, oh my, so weird. I felt them going through my bed (how ??) and then i felt them gowing through myself. Sine waves, not making any sense in my imagination, because they seem to move stuff up and down ... but that would mean everything would collapse immediately. I have no idea. I tried analyzing it for WHATEVER REASON, suppressing the urge to call someone i know and waking everybody up.
So ... we had an earthquake somewhere, probably in the distance. I'm avoiding any news about it. It was only 4.3 richter, but we in Austria don't actually feel a lot of earthquakes. (we have around 1200 microquakes per year but nobody notices these. mostly.)
So ... the noise.
This noise. It was so ... i don't know. It came closer and closer and the waves just kept coming and then i thought "this is it. i'm done" waiting for whatever to happen and kill me.
The noise really frightened me the most and stuck with me. Imagine hundred trucks coming right at you at ten times the sound volume. It's like in the movies, when you see a nuke explode and hear the shockwave coming.
The earthquake stopped after around 10 seconds. These ten lousy seconds scared me so much, i keep talking about it all day. I mention it all day. I don't even know why. It's just stuck. I felt like i'm in a cage, here on the seventh floor were i live.
Seriously ... it was just ten seconds, but after two it was too long already and i felt like i'm trapped and i will die, because there's no chance in hell (haha) that i could make it out of the building in time. (i had no idea if the waves would get stronger ... the first thought is no-thought at all, just fear)
I'm writing this in the hope THAT THE ******* FEAR STOPS TELLING ME THAT THE NEXT ONE COULD HAPPEN ANY MOMENT AND IT COULD BE STRONGER THAN BEFORE AND THE GROWLING WILL EAT ME ALIVE and whatever ...
The tram passes by every minutes and every other tram makes huge growling noises and every time i now wait for everything to start shaking ...
Somebody please tell me this stops. It's not only embarrassing for me to be so deeply afraid of this, i don't even know why it's having so much influence on me. This is totally new for me. It's not even my first earthquake, although the others, many years apart, were lighter.
I guess it's a combination of darkness (it was 0400am) and this noise combined with the shaking that could have been too much for me to handle, but i don't know.
Thanks for your attention. Sorry if this is an incoherent posting, but in between fear impulsess and crying i simply lose my train of thought. |

i've experienced a handful of natural disaster type events. tornadoes, hurricane, forest fire for example.
but no earthquakes yet. extremely uncommon where i live apparently. but i'd like to witness one at some point i think. mark it off the list that it lives on. aside such notable calamities like asteroid impact, global pandemic of deadly contagion, massive emp flare that sends us technologically back to medieval times.
all those would be great.

I am certain that for some people who live with occuring natural desasters in the back of their mind, i must look like a total coward ... yet i have no understanding of why i am actually that much afraid and i have lived worse. Much worse. |

No, this doesn't help.
Everybody has his own scale of **** he has to live with, things aren't comparable at all. I already know that other people suffer more or less about things, but that does not help at all and i believe it's bad for emotional health to downplay ones own feelings just because other people have it worse.
Thus i made this stupid thread. |

I have witnessed several minor earthquakes, I always found them rather weird and kind of funny. Bad survival instincts I guess, in case of a major earthquake, I would probably be crushed under the debris of my house while silently giggling at those funny vibrations.
I had lightning strike about one meter away from me when I was a kid, same effect, I burst into fits of laughter and only realized some time later how close I had been to death.
The only thing that really freaks me out instantly are spiders and snakes. Weird how my stupid brain apparently considers them more threatening than natural disasters... Just think of how bad an average post by me is, and then realize half of them are even worse |

... you should be dead or pretty much burnt down ?
The laughter part i know from pain. I am quite good in dealing with pain, (comes with experience, i guess) and i once had my fingers in between a door and ... what's the word for it ... ... well, when the door closes, it also closes the gap it opens when the door opens ... ... between door and wall ... ... and the door closed. lol
Anyhow ... can you tell me more situations when you started laughing, although it seems weird for you ?
This sounds interesting to me and i want to know more, so i can feel what's going on in your mind. |

Uh..I was very little when this lightning thing happened, maybe 8 years old, so maybe it was 2 or even 3 meters and my memory is playing tricks on me.
Last time I had a similar inappropriate fit of laughter was actually at work, about 4 months back. Our building has a flat roof, and due to shoddy construction, rainwater wasn't able to drain off for years, so a little lake had formed above our heads. None of us really cared about it or considered it a critical situation, until parts of the ceiling suddenly collapsed and thousands of liters of rancid water were flooding our workplace like a tsunami. Funniest thing is, after I literally rolled on the floor (or better: in the water) laughing, my colleagues started to join into my laughter as well. Gosh, what fun we had. When the emergency team arrived, they where visibly impressed not only by the amount of destruction, but by how good humored all of us apparently were... I used to laugh before my mom or school principal gave me a spanking. Pretty weird. It's like an involuntary reaction, from being so scared and nervous.
I've felt maybe four small earthquakes, all small ones, and for some reason all in the middle of the night. On one level, I kind of enjoyed the sensation-- like being on a giant, really powerful vibrating massage table. But when I woke up enough to really think about it, they're pretty scary. You have no clues about whether a bigger one is on its way or not. At least with a hurricane or tornado, you get clues from what's going on with the weather. And with earthquakes, there's not much you can do about anyway.
I guess if you had pets, they could give you some clues. The animals all went inland before the big S.E. Asia tsunami. Maybe pet dogs, cats, fish or reptiles would detect something coming too. |

Yay. That's what makes it such a timeless classic. Else it would be just another funny video.
But the laughter is the divine sound of the horns of Jericho that tear down a man's career and leave him in the dust.
It's poetry, poetry in motion.

I've only experienced one earthquake and it was in 2011. It was the tiniest little quake (sounds a lot like yours to be honest), but everyone made a huge deal out of it. The good news is we got this hilarious image out of it:

Ha, I remember that one. It took a couple of hours for everybody in our office to calm down. One girl completely disappeared. It turned out she'd evacuated the building and gone straight home. No waiting around to see what happens for her.
Says here that Japan retired its earthquake-predicting catfish. The problem was they were detecting every little quake 2-3 days before it happened. The government wanted something that would just warn of big, dangerous earthquakes. |

Besides it seemingly being only a small, short earthquake ...
What the **** was that sound ? I understand if it was the wave of the earthquake moving, (i guess) but it sounded like a heavy Gustav driving through the street at a ******* hundred miles per hour.
When the noise got louder and louder i seriously thought i would die, because i could clearly hear it approach me at a way too high speed ... |

It's definitely an unsettling noise. I totally get why it scares you. It's not like thunder where it just comes and goes. It's that slow build up that feels eerie. |

We've had a few rumbles here in Tokyo in the past week weeks. Nothing big though. They had a 5 in Fukushima on Wednesday though.
The build quality the Japanese put into dampening the effects of earthquakes is amazing. I live on the 37th floor of my building. Yet due to the dampening I hardly ever feel a thing.
And to me, a big earthquake sounds kind of like a freight train with the de-dung-de-dung noise thingy from all the buildings shaking. "I think you should buy a new Mayan calendar. Mine has muscle cars on it." --áKenneth O'Hara

I used to top trees for the power company in Santa Cruz, back in the day. My first quake, I was 75-80 feet up in a Redwood tree. I had just snapped in, the tree starts swaying like crazy, and I'm thinking "Wtf, I haven't even started the saw!"
Then the groundsman yells "Quake", so I repel out. Of course, it stopped as soon as my feet hit the ground. Every climb I made the rest of the day was just a little bit more exciting! |
